In order to successfully bet on the UEFA Champions League, you are going to need to know a little about the tournament format. Here’s a rundown of what you can expect from a Champions League competition.

Qualification procedure

The 32 teams who make up the Champions League are all drawn from the participating European football leagues. The tournament’s governing body, UEFA, has rules that govern how many teams from each particular league gain automatical qualification for the Champions League. Most of the major leagues, like the Premier League and the Bundesliga, allow the top three teams to gain automatic qualification for the group stages of the Champions League, but even lower-placed teams can sometimes qualify through winning a two-legged play-off.

Group stages

Once the final 32 teams have been decided, the tournament begins with eight seeded groups of four. Each team must play the other three teams in their group in a round-robin format, and if a team manages to finish in the top two positions of the group, they will then go through to the knock-out rounds.

Knock-out rounds

This is where it gets interesting. From February onwards, each of the groups’ winners and runner-ups must go head to head in a two-legged contest to proceed further in the competition. The tournament concludes with the Champions League final; a single emotionally charged match held at the end of May.

Who Won The 2017/18 Champions League Competition?

It was business as usual at the last Champions League final, with Real Madrid picking up their third consecutive Champions League title after beating Liverpool 3-1. While Liverpool had more than their fair share of bad luck in this match, the sheer power of the Real Madrid team — that featured the likes of Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo — meant that the Spanish side once again proved that they are the greatest side in European football.

Such a defeat was hugely disappointing for Liverpool, as the team had emerged from the play-offs to dispatch the formidable likes of Porto, Manchester City, and Roma to book their first Champions League final appearance since 2007.

The 2017/18 Champions League was also notable due to a number of upsets, with the likes of Roma’s incredible 3-0 victory over Barcelona, and Sevilla’s 2-1 triumph over Manchester United proving that you never really know what you’re going to get from this iconic footballing tournament.

Who Will Win The 2018/19 Champions League?

While it’s amusing to contemplate putting a bet on the likes of Club Brugge, Viktoria Plzen or AEK Athens to win the Champions League, the amusement would quickly fade if you were to actually do so. Instead, if looking to predict the winner of the tournament, it’s usually advisable to focus on the big names…

Manchester City

Given Manchester City’s impressive form over the past few years, it’s little surprise to find that the English team are the narrow favourites to pick up the 2018/19 Champions League title. Despite the obvious calibre of the side, it’s surprising to find that Manchester City have never even appeared in a Champions League final before. So could this be their year?

Pep Guardiola’s team certainly aren’t lacking in firepower. From outrageously talented strikers such as Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Leeroy Sane, to their formidable midfield stars like Kevin De Bruyne, Fernandinho and David Silva, it seems that Manchester City could be the team to beat in this year’s Champions League.

Many bookies also have Juventus as a team most likely to win the upcoming Champions League. The Italian side have won the Champions League twice before, and it’s easy to see them returning to European glory next year.

Much of Juventus’ boosted fortunes rests on the shoulders of their impressive new signing, Cristiano Ronaldo. However, Ronaldo aside, there’s still ability spread across this Juventus team: head coach, Massimiliano Allegri, has done a great job of revamping the side after a number of misfiring seasons. As a result of Allegri’s work, no team would fancy their chances against a squad that includes the likes of Mario Mandzukic, Leonardo Bonucci, Paulo Dybala and Juan Cuadrado.

With no fewer than five Champions League titles under their belts, it’s easy to see why Barcelona are up amongst the favourites for the upcoming tournament. Ernesto Valverde’s side will be keen to make amends for last year’s shock Champions League defeat by Roma, and you can imagine them going all the way this year.

Not only does Barcelona have the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez up front, but with stars like Ivan Rakitic, Gerard Pique and Philippe Coutinho on hand to provide plenty of goalscoring opportunities, we think that this could easily be Barcelona’s year.

Paris Saint-Germain

Paris Saint-Germain have come on leaps and bounds in recent years, and they will be hoping to make their first Champions League final appearance in May. So what’s behind Paris Saint-Germain’s turnaround in form?

You only have to look at how Neymar reenergised the team last year to see what a formidable side they have become. Alongside the Brazilian ace, you only have to note the presence of the likes of their stunning young goalscorer Kylian Mbappe, and established star striker, Edinson Cavani, to realise that Paris Saint-Germain could signal the rebirth of French club football.

Bayern Munich

This fearsome German team are no strangers to Champions League football. With five Champions League titles to their name, you can easily see why Bayern Munich could go all the way once more. The Bavarian team were unlucky to have been beaten by Real Madrid in the Champions League semi final last year, and so they will be keen to make their presence felt once more.

While their new manager, Niko Kovac, is still something of an unknown quantity, the rest of the Bayern Munich team is much more familiar. With the likes of Robert Lewandowski, James Rodríguez and Franck Ribery heading the team, expect a solid performance from these footballing titans in 2018/19.

Real Madrid

With their recent Champions League triumph giving Real Madrid a record-breaking 13 tournament titles, it would seem foolish not to consider possibility of the Spanish team picking up their sixth Champions League title in seven years. But with Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure to Juventus, is a bet on Real Madrid still a feasible option?

There are definite signs that all is not well in the Real Madrid camp, and it’s yet to be seen how well their new coach, Julen Lopetegui, will handle the pressure of the job. However, with a team that still includes the likes of Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, they still present a formidable challenge for any side.

With five Champions League titles, Liverpool are England’s most successful club in this tournament. They will still be hurting after their recent final defeat to Real Madrid, and the early signs are that Jurgen Klopp’s team are keen to make amends for their unfortunate loss.

Their squad features excellent players like Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino, and with recent signing, Xherdan Shaqiri, on hand to create mayhem for opponents’ defences, we think that Liverpool could be in with a real chance in May.

Manchester United

Manchester United are easily one of Europe’s greatest ever football teams, and their fans will be hoping for big things in their Champions League campaign. However, with ongoing backroom drama and doubts about the temperament of their fiery manager, Jose Mourinho, it remains to be seen whether they can pick up their fourth Champions League title.

Thankfully, Manchester United have enough talent in their squad to strike fear into any team. Alongside star strikers like Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial, it seems that Paul Pogba might be finally settling into the team, and recent signing, Fred, could help Manchester United rediscover their Champions League form.
