AEK Athens
Benfica

Greek champions AEK face Benfica, who finished second in Portugal, in a match that both sides will be hoping doesn’t constitute a decider for third place in Group E. Both sides lost their opening games in the competition, and the majority of AEK vs Benfica betting tips indicate that the hosts face an uphill battle to avoid a second consecutive beating. Nonetheless, the Athenian side have a decent home record in this competition and will fancy their chances of getting something here.

Both sides at present sit in third place in their domestic leagues, and they share the bottom half of this group. They both need a win here to get their seasons rolling, but Benfica have a clearly better squad and are generously-priced 11/10 favourites to win here with BetBright. It is a clash of two strong defences, and this game could easily be decided by a single goal. We’d expect Benfica to be the side scoring that goal, and they’re 5/1 to win 1-0 per 888sport at the moment. Finally, in what we think are the AEK vs Benfica best odds of the night, we’d fancy Eduardo Salvio to open the scoring. He’s Benfica’s penalty-taker and a live threat from open play, too.

AEK vs Benfica Betting Tips: Form Guide

AEK Already Exceeding Expectations

The mere fact that AEK are playing Champions League football is a sign that they’ve gone further than expected this season. Their play-off fixture for this competition paired them with Celtic, and the Glasgow side had much the better of both legs from a possession and creativity point of view, but the Greek champions took chances when they were presented and came through to the groups. Their opening game in the Champions League proper took them to Amsterdam, where three second-half goals gave Ajax the victory.

That setback was followed by a trip to Thessaloniki to face PAOK, and Marinos Ouzonidis’ men were again on the wrong end of the result. Goals on the half-hour mark and again on the hour from home striker Prijovic gave PAOK a 2-0 win, and at the present time places them on top of the league, a point ahead of AEK. Aside from that setback, the champions have maintained a 100% domestic record. They got back to winning ways in their weekend game – a third consecutive away fixture – when they defeated OFI Crete 3-0. Bakasetas, Rodrigo Galo and Ponce were the scorers.

AEK do have a certain disadvantage in Europe, given that the level of opposition they face week-in, week-out does little to prepare them for the quality they will face in the Champions League. They will have earmarked their home games against Ajax and Benfica – who have a similar problem – as opportunities to pick up points. While the bulk of AEK vs Benfica betting tips for today will favour the visitors, AEK do have the players to spring a shock if their visitors aren’t 100% on their game.

The Eagles Haven’t Landed Yet

Benfica finished second in Portugal last season, just a few points behind champions Porto. At present, they sit third in this season’s championship, behind the same club and also surprise early leaders Braga. Points have been dropped – at home to troubled giants Sporting Lisbon, and at the weekend against inoffensive mid-table makeweights Chaves. Third is also the position they hold in Group E, having lost their opening game not quite as heavily as their hosts tonight did.

Aguias‘ opener came at home to obvious group favourites Bayern Munich. As tends to happen when teams play Bayern, Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring early on, but Benfica held out well to prevent the expected escalation, until ten minutes into the second half, when former Estadio da Luz prospect Renato Sanches snatched a second after an imperious counter-attack from the German champions. Aware that progressing in this competition is going to be tough without winning the home games, Rui Vitoria will have impressed upon his squad the importance of making up for the loss by getting a win on the road – and this game is the most likely source.

It will also be noted in AEK vs Benfica match previews that the visitors have some frustrations from the weekend’s game to work out. Twice they led through winger Rafa Silva at Chaves’ Estadio Municipal, and twice the home side’s midfielder Ghazaryan hit back. The second equaliser came four minutes into time added on at the end of the game, making it very much a matter of two points dropped, rather than one gained, for the travelling favourites.

AEK vs Benfica Preview: Recent Meetings

These sides have met before in Europe, albeit not in this competition. Nine years ago almost to the day, the sides met here in the Europa League, and the game was settled by a single goal from AEK’s Swedish centre-half Daniel Majstorovic.

In the return game, played in Lisbon, it was Benfica who emerged as the winners. Once again the margin was just one goal. Benfica’s shining star on the day was Angel di Maria – who has since shown his class at Real Madrid, Manchester United and PSG – with two goals, one scored on the stroke of half time and the other 17 minutes from the end. AEK did have time to notch a consolation goal with five minutes left through Ismael Blanco, but a consolation was all it was. Across the two games the sides evenly split the points, and AEK would certainly settle for any kind of win this evening.

AEK vs Benfica Prediction: Narrow Away Win

Both of these sides will feel that there are points here to be won. Benfica may be away from home, but they are the stronger of the two sides – this is agreed by all bookmakers, who have them as the starting favourites for this game. However, AEK will feel that in front of their own fans, they can deliver a result against a visitor that has not been flawless this season.

It’s a tough one to predict, with the sides concerned both knowing that a defeat here will seriously restrict their chances of progressing not only in the Champions League but will also stick a spoke in their wheels when it comes to potentially moving into the Europa League if they can’t make the top two. However, with the marginally better squad that the Portuguese side have, we feel that the most reasonable AEK vs Benfica prediction here is for the visitors to take the three points and move on to a double-header with Ajax in the next two games.
