Despite seeing their dreams of an invincible season go up in smoke last weekend, AIK will be favourites in this showdown not least because they have home advantage. At odds of 4/5 with 888 for the win, they seem like the team to back here. However, for a better price, you need to get more creative – have a look at the odds on show at William Hill, where you can get 4/1 on the game being level at half time but the hosts winning out in 90 minutes. As far as a correct score goes, these sides are pretty evenly matched. We’d back AIK to win 2-1, which at 15/2 with BetBright seems like the AIK vs Hammarby best odds of the evening, as we don’t see Hammarby going scoreless.

AIK vs Hammarby Betting Tips: Form Guide

AIK: The “I” Doesn’t Stand For Invincible

With twenty games played and just ten more on the cards, the league leaders held a realistic chance of going the whole campaign unbeaten. That was until last Sunday, when they visited third-place Norrkoping and saw their untarnished record taken apart in the space of ten second-half minutes. Two goals from Simon Thern – son of Swedish football legend Jonas, incidentally – put the league leaders to the sword, and brought Snoka within six points of the league lead. The result also ended an eight-game Allsvenskan winning streak for Gnaget, which had run since May, when they drew 3-3 at home with … Norrkoping.

That winning streak was interspersed with games in other competitions – AIK were knocked out of the Europa League, losing 1-0 home and away to Denmark’s Nordsjaelland – and was mostly made up of games against the weaker sides in Sweden. Home and away wins against Brommapojkarna and Trelleborg certainly aren’t bad results, but the leaders now need to show that they can win when the opposition is a competitor for the league title. Having led from the front all season, will AIK be able to deal with a setback?

This weekend will be pivotal in deciding the end destination of the Swedish championship. Win here, and AIK will be hard to catch in the eight games that remain. Lose, despite the AIK vs Hammarby betting tips for today favouring them, and they will be just a single point ahead of their opponents, and in the midst of their worst form of 2018. This afternoon is not the time to hold back.

Hammarby Nailed At Relegation Strugglers

No-one will have been happier to see Simon Thern’s double strike than Hammarby coach Stefan Billborn (apart, maybe, from the paternally-proud Jonas). After losing at home to Djurgarden, Bajen had fallen to five points behind the leaders and saw their title hopes hit a bump in the road. Having won the league just once before, in 2001, picking it up again at the expense of their bigger-name neighbours would be a dream for HIF fans. It’s going to remain a dream, however, if they keep spilling chances to catch up to Rikard Norling’s men.

For an example of such errors, let’s take last Monday, when Bajen visited Sirius, the team third from bottom in the table. Coming into the game on a three-match losing streak, the strugglers should have been there for the taking, allowing the gap to be closed to just two points ahead of the derby. Instead, Hammarby fell behind on 16 minutes, only finding an equaliser through Montenegrin winger Vladimir Rodic with eleven minutes to go. So a small gain was made in terms of the title race, but not the attacking, goalscoring statement of intent that the visiting fans would have hoped for.

Even when Hammarby have won recently, there has been a nagging sense that they need to be better. A 3-2 win at Dalkurd saw them struggling to get a decisive lead, and leaking two goals to a relegation candidate. Equally, a recent 3-0 win in the cup sounds impressive until you note that it was against lower-league Carlstad United. As AIK vs Hammarby match previews will note, the visitors really need to step up their game to match the occasion here. Do that, and the title dream could come closer.

AIK vs Hammarby Preview: Recent Meetings

The first AIK-Hammarby derby of the season took place at Hammarby’s Tele2 Arena, and as derbies so often are, this one was scrappy. In the event, it was decided by a single goal, ten minutes from time, scored from the penalty spot by AIK’s forward Tarik Elyounoussi. The irritation for Hammarby will be that they dominated possession but struggled to do much with it. Even if the winner came late on, the visitors would point to their three shots on target against the hosts’ one.

Traditionally, matches between these games are close and, if Hammarby seek some encouragement, it might be worth pointing out that the last time they lost here was in 2015. In the two matches played between the sides the results have been a goalless draw (2016), and last season a 2-1 win for the visiting Hammarby. The bad news is that Amar Smarason, who scored one and laid on the other for Bajen on that day, has since departed for Lillestrom.

AIK vs Hammarby Prediction: Narrow Home Win

Losing last weekend will certainly not have been what AIK were hoping for – not only did it give some hope to Hammarby, it also brought Norrkoping and, at a push, Malmo back into the title race. However, that defeat will only be a problem if the hosts now wobble in the title race. If they win this match, against their closest challengers, they’ll have overcome a bump and have just eight games left, with the added confidence that comes from winning a crunch game at this stage of the season. For Hammarby, this is something of a last throw. Lose here, and they’re seven points behind with no wins in their last three games – as good as dead, in other words.

There’s every reason to think that AIK won’t have it all their own way here. Hammarby have scored more goals than any other team in Allsvenskan, and although AIK were unbeaten all season up until last week, they have recently had a lot of easy matches. But guess what? It’s not like Hammarby have been playing the cream of Swedish football. Losing to mid-table Djurgarden and drawing at Sirius… those are not results that make us likely to favour them in our AIK vs Hammarby prediction for this game. Our feeling is that AIK will win this, by a score of two goals to one, and that the visitors will have plenty of missed opportunities to regret.
