Ajax vs AEK Athens Betting Tips: Form Guide
Ajax Back Where They Think They Belong
Ajax came through three qualifying rounds of the Champions League this season, reaching the group stages of the competition for the first time in four years. The Amsterdam side came second in the Dutch Eredivisie last season. They are unbeaten in Europe so far in 2018/19, having beaten Sturm Graz home and away in the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round, winning 5-1 on aggregate. Next, they overcame Standard Liège 5-2 on aggregate in the third qualifying round, before beating Dynamo Kyiv 3-1 on aggregate in the play-offs.
Although they have not been in the group stages since 2014/15, the Amsterdam side have lost only once in their last six Champions League group games. They have won three and drawn two of those games. They also have a good pedigree against Greek sides in European competition, which is worth noting, if you are looking for Ajax vs AEK Athens betting tips for today. Ajax’s only defeat at home to a Greek club in the Champions League came in the first leg of the 1995/96 semi-final, when they lost 1-0 to Panathinaikos. Ajax won the second leg 3-0 in the Netherlands, though.
AEK In Fine European Form
AEK Athens are in the group stages of the Champions League for the first time since 2006/07, and they will be looking for their first European win in the Netherlands. AEK have lost all four of their previous European matches in the Netherlands, conceding 10 goals and scoring none. History is also against them when it comes to getting out of the group stages and into the knock-out rounds of the Champions League. All four of their previous forays into the group stages have ended in failure to progress to the next round.
AEK were Greek champions for the 12th time in 2017/18, which was their first title since 1994. Scottish football fans may be familiar with the team, as they beat Celtic in the third qualifying round. The Greeks went on to beat Hungarian club Vidi in the play-offs, winning 3-2 on aggregate. Their win over Celtic ended a run of eight consecutive draws in European competitions. With their successes this season, AEK have now gone 14 games without defeat in European competitions, having won four and drawn 10 of those matches.

Ajax vs AEK Athens Preview: Recent Meetings
The two sides have played each other before in the Champions League, though it was over two decades ago. Both sides have, obviously, changed beyond recognition in the intervening years. Ajax and AEK last met in the group stages of the 1994/95 Champions League. That season, of course, Ajax went on to win the Champions League, beating AC Milan in the final in Vienna. AEK beat Scottish side Rangers in the qualifying rounds of the competition.
The Dutch side came out on top in both of the games against AEK. The first game was in September 1994, in Athens. Ajax won the game 2-1, thanks to goals from Jari Litmanen and Patrick Kluivert. Toni Savevski netted for AEK. In the second game, in Amsterdam, Ajax won the game 2-0. This time both the goals were scored by the same player, Tarik Oulida.
Ajax vs AEK Athens Prediction: Comfortable Home Win
This is one of those games where it looks like backing the home side would be a good idea. The bookies have certainly made Ajax favourites for the game. The Dutch outfit’s record against Greek sides is very good, too, whereas AEK have never won a European game in the Netherlands. Ajax will also be backed by their passionate home crowd, which could give them another slight edge.
Our prediction is that Ajax will win the game pretty comfortably. We suspect that 2-0 will be the final score. Backing Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to score is also a good idea, in our opinion.
