Bahia vs Palmeiras Betting Tips: Form Guide

Tricky Game For Bahia

It’s been another middling season for Bahia so far. Despite having had made the surprise appointment of Enderson Moreira as head coach in June, the team have struggled to retain any consistency in their form and are now placed thirteenth in the Brazilian Serie A table with seven wins and seven draws from 24 games.

However, Bahia have proved that they can still provide a tough challenge for much bigger teams. Their game against Sao Paulo last weekend was only lost by just a single goal, and they were unlucky to lose 0-1 to league leaders Internacional in the middle of August.

Bahia fans will take heart from the team’s 2-0 home win against Sport Recife at the start of September that saw goals from Gilberto Oliveira Souza Junior and Tiago Pagnussat. Gilberto was on form again with a goal in Bahia’s 0-2 away win against Ceara and with further strikes against the likes of America MG and Atletico Mineiro, he remains Bahia’s biggest threat up front. Whilst it’s been another frustrating season for Bahia, they can take comfort from the fact that they thrashed their fierce rivals, Vitoria, 4-1 back in July.

Very Important Match For Palmeiras

Palmeiras finished their 2017 Brazilian Serie A campaign in second place behind Corinthians. And seeing as last season’s champions are floundering mid-table, Palmeiras will be keen to claim the top spot. In order to do this, they need to leapfrog Internacional and Sao Paulo who are both just three points ahead of Palmeiras, and this is why Sunday’s game is so important, especially as they recently lost cup games against Cruzeiro and Cerro Porteno.

You’ll probably recognise Palmeiras’ head coach, Luiz Felipe Scolari, from being Brazil’s manager during their infamous 2014 World Cup campaign. But it seems that Scolari is having a much better time with the club side who have picked up 13 wins and 7 draws from their 24 Serie A games.

Palmeiras are currenly nine games unbeaten in league football, and it was business as usual last weekend when they managed to beat Corinthians through a single goal from Deyverson. Prior to this match, there was a handy 2-0 win against Atletico PR, a 1-2 away victory against lowly Chapecoense, and an extremely hard fought 0-0 away draw against league leaders, Internacional.

Scolari’s team aren’t invincible though, as league defeats by Fluminense and Cruzeiro proved. But with strikers like Deyverson and Dudu on hand, we think that they always represent an extremely tough team to beat.

Bahia vs Palmeiras Preview: Recent Meetings

In the 11 games that have taken place between these two teams, Palmeiras have usually managed to win as they have six victories compared to just one for Bahia. The sides last met in the Copa do Brasil in August where Palmeiras managed to win 1-0 at home thanks to a late goal from Dudu.

Prior to this, Palmeiras thumped Bahia 3-0 at home in the Serie A in May as a result of three first half goals from Willian, Antonio Carlos and Miguel Borja. But Bahia have shown that they can occasionally hold Palmeiras back as was shown in the thrilling 2-2 draw in October 2017 that saw Edigar Junio get Bahia that all important point in the 89th minute.

However, you have to go all the way back to July 2012 for the only time that Bahia managed to get the upper hand against Palmeiras. And whilst this 0-2 away victory will give Bahia fans some hope, it’s clear that they face a very tough challenge this Sunday.

Bahia vs Palmeiras Prediction: Narrow Away Win

Sunday’s game looks to be a thrilling Serie A showdown, and we’re expecting big things from Palmeiras as they aim to seize the top spot in the league. Whilst the home team will be putting up plenty of resistance, our Bahia vs Palmeiras prediction is that the visitors will just managed to pick up three points from this game.

Both teams haven’t been enjoying too many goals recently, and so we’re not expecting a high scoring game. But seeing as Palmeira have forwards like Dudu and Deyverson in their ranks, we are sure that they should be able to grab at least one goal.

Much depends on how Bahia perform under pressure in front of their home crowd. Home advantage didn’t seem to count for too much in the side’s 0-1 defeat by Internacional in August. But we have to remember that Bahia managed to beat Corinthians 1-0 and hold Sao Paulo to a 2-2 draw in front of the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova faithful this season.

But on the whole, we are expecting that Bahia won’t be able to last the full 90 minutes without conceding at least one Palmeira goal. And with Bahia only scoring four goals in the past five games, we think that they could have a tough time in evening the scoreline.
