Bayer Leverkusen vs Mainz Betting Tips: Form Guide

Leverkusen Need League Victories

Heiko Herrlich’s Bayer Leverkusen side have not begun their Bundesliga campaign well. In their three league matches so far in 2018/19, they have suffered three straight defeats. That is the first time the club has begun with that record in 40 years in the Bundesliga. Another stat which will worry Bayer fans, and encourage everyone associated with Mainz, is that Herrlich has overseen just eight home wins out of 18 games during his time in charge. They have lost five out of 10 games at the BayArena in 2018.

In Europe this week, though, things have been much better. Bayer produced a stunning comeback in the opening game of their Europa League group stage campaign, fighting back from 2-0 down in Bulgaria, to beat Ludogorets 3-2. Kai Havertz scored two goals in that game, and could be a key man this weekend.

Leverkusen will have to do without Karim Bellarabi, who is suspended after picking up a red card in the Bundesliga game against Bayern Munich. Jamaican winger Leon Bailey should return to the team. Brazilian youngster Paulinho may also play a part in Sunday, though he is likely to start on the bench.

Mainz Flying High

Sandro Scwarz’s Mainz team have been one of the surprise packages of the Bundesliga this season, having made their best start to a league season since 2010/11. They have won both of their home matches, against Augsburg and Stuttgart, and came away from Nurnberg with a draw. They have also beaten Erzgebirge in the German Cup. They are currently in sixth place in the Bundesliga table, and head into this weekend’s game with no fresh injury concerns hampering them. Both goals in that 2-1 win were scored by substitutes, in the form of Alexandru Maxim and Anthony Ujah. Both those players might feature in the starting line-up this weekend. Stefan Bell and Jean-Philippe Gbamin, both of whom missed the win over Augsburg last time out, have returned to training and could feature in the line-up at Leverkusen. Ujah has scored two goals coming off the bench this season. Three of Mainz’s four league goals have been scored by subs, which is possibly worth noting.

Mainz will also offer a defensive obstacle to Leverkusen. The 05ers have conceded just two league goals so far in their three games in 2018/19. That is the best record in the league currently.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Mainz Preview: Recent Meetings

These two sides played each twice in the Bundesliga in 2017/18. Each team won one game, with the home side coming out on top in both matches. Leverkusen won the second game, at the BayArena on January 28, 2p18, emerging from the clash as 3-1 victors. Leon Bailey scored their first goal, three minutes into the second half. Brazilian defender Wendall scored the second with a 68th penalty kick.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Mainz Prediction: Narrow Away Win

Bayer Leverkusen vs Mainz betting tips for today, then our prediction is that Mainz will come out on top in this game. Leverkusen’s home form has been very poor in recent times, while the 05ers have started this season in superb style. Our prediction is that the visitors will win this game 2-1, bringing more pain to the Levrkusen coaching staff and supporters. Betting on a substitute to score for Mainz might also be a good idea, given the form of players off the bench for them this season.
