Bristol City vs Aston Villa Betting Tips: Form Guide

Bristol City’s Inconsistencies Mar An Otherwise Fine Start

Bristol are the favourites here but only barely. Few Bristol City vs Aston Villa betting tips would consider this anything other than a close call.

Things started off slowly for Bristol with back-to-back draws against both Nottingham and Bolton, which went 1-1 and 2-2 respectively. While there were positives in both games, both suffered from a lack of consistency, as each had one half of play distinctly better than the other. Bristol then lost 1-0 to Plymouth after failing to capitalise on several opportunities. They next fell victim to an impressive Middlesbrough in a 2-0 loss and further continued their drab start to the season.

Luckily, things started to get better with a brilliant 3-0 victory over a struggling Queens Park Rangers. Better yet, they capitalised on this momentum by ending the undefeated runs of Swansea and Blackpool with 1-0 and 4-1 victories and followed up with a 1-0 win over Sheffield United.

Sadly though, their luck changed with a 4-2 loss to West Brom and a 1-0 loss to Wigan to scupper their momentum. Bristol City have been good so far this season but will need greater consistency to trouble the top end of the league.

Aston Villa Struggle To Recapture Last Season’s Quality

Despite the gulf in league positions – Aston Villa currently sits at 13th while Bristol City stands at 8th place in the league – there’s little between these two in either points or performance. Few, if any Bristol City vs Aston Villa match previews are able to pick an easy winner.

Aston Villa actually got off to a stronger start, coming from behind to beat Hull City 3-1 and backing this strong performance up with a resilient 3-2 injury time win over Wigan, which just so happens to be the team that handed Bristol City their last loss.

Sadly though, after this, their season slowed down before going a bit off the rails. They went three for three in draws against Ipswich, Brentford and Reading. These went 1-1, 2-2 and 1-1 again. Then came a bruising 4-1 loss to Sheffield United, and it’s worth pointing out that Bristol beat Sheffield just as Aston Villa beat Wigan, and at least their opponents looked better in defeat.

A 1-1 draw to Blackburn followed, another team Bristol handily bested. They finally got some breathing room with a strong 2-0 win over Rotherham but come into this match off another loss after a 2-1 battle with Sheffield Wednesday. Overall, we would say that, so far, the slight edge in recent performances goes to Bristol City.

Bristol City vs Aston Villa Preview: Recent Meetings

Overall, when it comes to the head-to-head record between Bristol City and Aston Villa, the latter side has a very clear advantage having won over double the matches. However, considering that the first of these contests took place in 1900, it’s fair to say not all of them will be relevant when determining Bristol City vs Aston Villa betting tips for today.

There are four modern matches for us to look at, the first taking place in 2016 and seeing Bristol City handily beat Aston Villa 3-1. But if you thought that their recent meetings would see another advantage for Bristol, then you are sadly mistaken. The following year, Aston Villa beat Bristol City 2-0 and they ended their 2017 bouts with a 1-1 stalemate.

The biggest cause for concern for Bristol will be the painful memory of Aston Villa’s astonishing 5-0 mauling of them in January of this year. While it’s only one game difference, that psychological advantage could well be a major factor heading into this contest.

Bristol City vs Aston Villa Prediction: Tight Bristol Victory

When you start to look at the dynamic between these two teams in detail, it becomes obvious why a Bristol City vs Aston Villa prediction is such a difficult task.

On one hand, Bristol City have had a slightly better season thus far. However, one factor we haven’t mentioned is that Aston Villa did manage to do a lot better than their opponents last season, threatening the top spots in a way that Bristol was nowhere near close to doing. On top of that, you have that incredible 5-0 win over Bristol from the start of this year. We know the world of football moves quickly, but not quite quickly enough to take away the significance of that victory.

All that being said though, we think that the pressure on Aston Villa to start producing results will overshadow the psychological advantage of that recent win and ultimately, a better set of recent performances matters more than a better last season. With that in mind, our Bristol City vs Aston Villa prediction is a very tough win for the home team.
