Cardiff Blues
Munster

The European Challenge Cup winners Cardiff Blues host a confident Munster at the BT Sports Arms Park this Friday evening in round four of the Guinness Pro14. Despite demonstrating signs of pure class at times, the Blues have been the epitome of frustration thus far this campaign, losing by one or two points on all occasions. Munster have been decent, losing once but winning with a bonus point twice. Can the Blues maintain their class for 80 minutes, or will Munster continue their consistent solidity? Here, we take a look at the best odds, both sides’ form and their recent meetings.

Although Munster are slight favourites here, we feel that the home advantage will serve the Blues well this weekend, so are backing them to win. The Blues to win is priced at 6/5 with 888sport, and by a 1-12 point margin is priced at a tempted 5/2 with Betfair. Those are our low and high-risk betting tips for this Friday, but some of you may well find the opposite for Munster more attractive. Fly-half Jarrod Evans returns to the side on Friday, so why not back him to score anytime at 15/2 with Betway?

Cardiff Blues vs Munster Betting Tips: Form Guide

Blues A Picture Of Frustration

It is no secret that the Cardiff Blues have had a terrible beginning of the season, losing all three of their fixtures by just one or two points. There is an urgency and frustration at the Arms Park, and a real need to find a victory from somewhere. Their opening match saw them host European and Pro14 champions Leinster in a game that they largely dominated, as a brace from Lee-Lo and Harries saw them take a hefty leave. Of course, they lost the lead as Leinster fought back to win 32-33, setting the tone for the rest of their games. This devastating but acceptable loss against Leinster was followed by defeat to Benetton away, due to an 80th minute try and conversion from Ioane and Allen respectively. This was a game they should have won, but their most recent loss is what will give their fans the most concern and maybe even panic. They travelled to Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi to meet one of the poorest sides in the competition, Zebre. It was a case of Déjà vu for the Blues, as they scored an impressive three converted tries in the opening ten minutes, but somehow did pretty much nothing but concede for the rest of the game. They held a 21-point lead after 10 minutes, but threw it away as Zebre astonishingly came back to win 26-24. This weekend, Jarrod Evans, Willis Halaholo and Blaine Scully all return to the backline, where Ellis Jenkins, Josh Turnbull and Dmitri Arhip take charge of the pack.

A Solid Start For Munster

Munster have been quite impressive so far this season, as the Irish province have lost once but won twice with bonus points. They have victories over the Ospreys (49-13) and Cheetahs (38-0), but fell short against an attacking Glasgow Warriors side away from home (25-10). Munster tore a voluntarily depleted Ospreys side apart last time out, beating them 49-13 at Irish Independent Park, with tries from Cronin, Sweetnam and Botha, to name a few. The consistent boot of Carberry impressed, and although the Ospreys seemed to have accepted defeat before travelling across the border, Munster were clinical and got the job done. Munster have built valuable momentum from their victories, winning twice with 112 points in three games. Munster have CJ Stander returning to add some muscle up front, so Ellis Jenkins and the Blues’ back row will have their hands full. Munster have demonstrated vulnerabilities though, as they lost against a good (but not great) Glasgow Warriors side. The Blues should fancy themselves, despite low levels of confidence of late, if they can maintain the same pace and attitude for 80 minutes as they have failed to do thus far. If the Blues are slightly off the mark, make no mistake, Munster will undoubtedly punish them.

Cardiff Blues vs Munster Preview: Recent Meetings

Last season, the sides met twice in the Guinness Pro14, sharing the victories equally. Munster got the early advantage, beating the Cardiff Blues in front of the Irish sea of red during September of 2017. Munster won that match 37-10, with the help from a Hanrahan double, aided by the consistent boot of Keatley. In the return fixture, the Blues won 25-18 at the Cardiff Arms Park, as Cook, Williams and the try-scoring machine Owen Lane all crossed the whitewash. The home advantage obviously plays a crucial role in this fixture, so keep that in mind when placing your bets here.

Cardiff Blues vs Munster Prediction: Blues Edge Victory

This is a tough fixture to call, due to Cardiff demonstrating such a lack of ability to close games out with even the best of leads. We are hesitant but do feel that the Cardiff Blues will take this one at home, as they are really due a win and their previous meetings demonstrate the influence of the home advantage in this fixture. With key-players fly-half Jarrod Evans and Ellis Jenkins returning, the Blues should have more stability in all areas of the field. The Arms Park will be passionate Friday evening due to the poor results of late, which will undoubtedly aid them in their pursuit for their first win.
