After Chelsea’s struggles against Arsenal in the League Cup midweek, it’s not as clear cut as to be is expected that they’ll progress against Newcastle on Sunday. It’s likely that Antonio Conte will field a strong team, conscious that the FA Cup is one of their best chances of silverware this season and if Eden Hazard starts, he has looked in fantastic form and to score anytime at William Hill 17/20 is a very tempting price. Betway have fantastic odds of 4/1 for the game to be drawn and if you think it’ll finish 1-1 then this is 7/1 at BetBright too.

Chelsea vs Newcastle United Preview

Chelsea look to bounce back

Antonio Conte will be extremely disappointed with how Chelsea went out of the League Cup in the London derby at The Emirates on Wednesday night as Arsenal fought back to win 2-1 and book a place at Wembley against Manchester City. On the night, Chelsea weren’t the better team and Conte could have no complaints that they lost the game.

In the league, Chelsea have become all too familiar with draws as of late. Before the game against Arsenal in the League Cup, they had drawn five out of their previous six games and struggled to see teams off that they would be expecting to beat. Conte has made it clear he is unhappy with the board’s transfer policy and has felt like they aren’t willing to give him the big money that other teams around Chelsea are using to spend on players. Conte and his team will have to make do with the resources they have on Sunday and it’s likely he’ll send out a strong team with the focus of ensuring progression in the competition that Chelsea now have the best opportunity of winning.

Eden Hazard will be key, and has impressed of late, in a match that Conte needs to win to avoid awkward questions about his future at the club.

Newcastle’s ups and downs

Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle side will be keen to build a cup run and take the confidence that comes with that as they make the trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon in some of the better form they’ve been in all season.

Having lost only once in their last five games (and that to Manchester City) they have climbed out of the relegation zone in the league, sitting in 15th place and made it past a potentially tricky tie against Luton in the third round. Newcastle are certainly a team who play better at home, and their away form has been a worry for Benitez and his players at times this season.

Recent impressive wins over West Ham and Stoke will give Newcastle confidence that they can surprise pundits and fans by beating Chelsea, but it’s likely that Newcastle would be happy enough forcing a replay and making Chelsea visit St James’ Park. Benitez has been criticised at times for his side’s negative approach to games against the ‘big’ teams so it will prove interesting to see how they line up for this one at the weekend.

Chelsea vs Newcastle United: Head-to-Head

Newcastle are without a win against Chelsea in their last four games when the two teams have met. They last managed to beat the London side in the Premier League in December 2014 but have often suffered at the hands of Chelsea in recent years.

Historically, Chelsea have more wins against Newcastle United as well, but it hasn’t always been plain sailing for them in this fixture either. Newcastle won both games against Chelsea in 2013 (although both were at St James’ Park) and they managed to grab a point against Chelsea in their 2016 league game at home too.

Newcastle’s form away against Chelsea is a different story, where Newcastle haven’t won at Stamford Bridge since 2012. Sunday’s game sees a Chelsea side lacking confidence but who will be expected to win take on a Newcastle team with renewed vigour.

Chelsea vs Newcastle United Prediction

Whilst most Chelsea vs Newcastle United match previews will likely predict a comfortable win for Chelsea in this FA Cup tie, we do fancy that a draw may be on the cards. It’s unlikely that Newcastle will progress by the end of Sunday’s fixture, but don’t rule out the possibility of Rafa Benitez’s side forcing a replay.

Eden Hazard has been in fantastic form for Chelsea as of late, even though they have struggled. Some would argue that Chelsea have become slightly over-reliant on the Belgian attacker and it’s likely he will play if Antonio Conte does indeed decide to field a strong team. 17/20 for Hazard to score at anytime is a good choice of bet should he start the game, so be sure to watch out for the line-ups roll in an hour or so before kick-off. You’ll find good odds on a draw result bet too and 7/1 at BetBright for the game to finish 1-1 is another tempting bet if you think Newcastle can spring a surprise at Stamford Bridge.
