Cork City
Dundalk

As the Irish season moves towards its conclusion, this weekend’s meeting with Dundalk presents defending champions Cork with one last chance to stop the title heading north. The visitors here are six points ahead in the league, and could secure the title by winning here and then in their game against Derry next week. The majority of Cork City vs Dundalk betting tips will be in favour of the visitors, given a recent collapse in league form by the Rebels. However, this is one last chance for Cork to influence the destination of the title – can they take it?

The visitors will come into this game with confidence behind them, having had last week off and watched as Cork lost to Bohemians. As such, odds set at 6/5 for the visitors to win could be the perfect opening for bettors to exploit. Given how low on confidence John Caulfield’s men must be right now, you might feel that the Cork City vs Dundalk best odds come from backing Dundalk to get ahead early on, lead at half time and win the game, which BetVictor are offering 14/5 against. Those who are interested in a longer punt would be best advised to take a correct score bet – Irish bookies Toals will give you 9/1 on a 2-0 win, and more or less a coronation, for the Lilywhites.

Cork City vs Dundalk Betting Tips: Form Guide

Rebels Without A Hope?

Cork fans will look back at this season and wonder aloud to themselves whether the Irish football calendar is fit for purpose. Right at the business end of the season, the schedulers have had them play four league games across 42 days, which is not conducive to momentum. Tellingly, their last two league matches have ended in defeat, with Sligo Rovers coming to Turners Cross and picking up a shock win, and then last week’s nightmare display against Bohemians in Dublin.

Bohs have been in fine form recently – a run of five games away from home, all won, showed that they were coming into this game in fine shape. However, even manager Keith Long would have been stunned by the fact that they led Cork 4-1 at half time. Defender Damien Delaney’s own goal set the ball rolling, before two goals for home forward Daniel Kelly widened the margin. Graham Cummins then pulled one back, but a Dan Pender goal in time added on really ended the match as a contest. A second for Cork, snatched by Jimmy Keohane midway through the second half, served only as consolation.

Cork do survive in the FAI Cup, with a semi-final at the end of the month to look forward to. While that may distract them from the fact that Cork City vs Dundalk betting tips for today will all be backing Dundalk, they needn’t get too happy about it – there’s a pretty decent chance that the semi-final could be away to Bohemians.

Dundalk Improve Their Position Without Playing

It’s been a decent couple of weeks for Dundalk, even taking into account that they haven’t kicked a ball in anger for the last fortnight. When they last did, it was in a FAI Cup quarter final at Limerick, which they won 4-0. Indeed, Dundalk haven’t played a league game in September – but due to Cork’s tribulations in that time frame, they have all but secured the Irish League title without needing to break a sweat. Indeed, considering the condition Limerick are in, that 4-0 win was also likely achieved without really getting out of breath.

The last time the Lilywhites did play in the league, Limerick were also the opposition. Despite the severe financial difficulties enveloping the Markets Field side, they gave a decent account of themselves, and it took until nine minutes from the end, with a Michael Duffy goal, for Dundalk to secure the three points. A tricky evening, sure, but Cork were otherwise occupied losing to Sligo, so it was still a decent night for the men from near the border.

If there is any hope to be gleaned by Cork fans from this Cork City vs Dundalk match preview, it may be found in the fact that the last time their opponents played someone who wasn’t Limerick, they lost. A home defeat by Shamrock Rovers stalled Stephen Kenny’s men in their title bid. Roberto Lopes scored very early, and Dylan Watts extremely late, either side of a Duffy goal for the home side. If Cork can find it within them to replicate that performance, their slim title hopes will grow at least a little.

Cork City vs Dundalk Preview: Recent Meetings

The pattern of these fixtures this season at least holds some hope for the home side, as the clubs have met three times in the league so far this season and each time the game has been won by the hosts.

Dundalk drew first blood back in March with a 1-0 win at Oriel Park. Pat Hoban scored after four minutes, and that was the game right there. In April, it was Cork’s turn to win a game by the only goal, Graham Morrissey securing all three points at the hour mark of the game.

Last time out, at the end of June, the sides swapped goals early in the first half – Kris Adorjan putting Dundalk ahead on 46 minutes before Josh O’Hanlon, only just on as as substitute, equalised on 66. It would take until the second minute of time added on, and a desperately unlucky own goal by Cork defender Stephen McLoughlin, for the game to be decided. That late goal may decide the whole title race.

Cork City vs Dundalk Prediction: Narrow Away Win

If Cork had pulled out a win last week at Dalymount Park, they’d be separated from the top of the league by just three points, and could go level here by beating Dundalk. If that were the case, we would be predicting a win here, and the title race being reignited. That’s how important momentum and confidence are in football. If Cork genuinely believed they had everything left to play for, they’d be a much more compelling bet to win this match – but how can they believe that, given everything that has gone before?

Then there’s the fact that, in the league, Cork just plain haven’t been very good. If an also-ran – let’s call them Derry City – picked up a single point from games against St Patrick’s Athletic, Sligo and Bohemians, their form would rightly be mocked. Those are Cork’s last three games as they aim to retain their Premier Division title. With the FAI Cup, and European efforts, distracting them right when they needed it least, Cork may have been a victim of their own success. With that said, last week’s defeat came at the end of a normal week without continental distraction, so Cork really have themselves to blame for that.

Making a call for this one is tough, but our Cork City vs Dundalk prediction is for the visitors to win. They can come into this game with confidence, and take their time. Cork need to win, and that means they need to attack. If the visitors can counter attack, then they’ve got this. Dundalk to win, 2-0.
