England vs Switzerland Betting Tips: Form Guide

Leicester Hosts England For Second Time Ever

England felt a little hard done-by following their 2-1 defeat to Spain on Saturday evening at Wembley. The referee controversially ruled out what would have been a late equaliser from Danny Welbeck, a decision which clearly irritated England gaffer Gareth Southgate. The England manager, though, was typically honest in his assessment of the performance, which he felt showed everyone who far this England team still has to travel, if it wants to be counted among the world’s top sides.

There have been changes to the squad for this game. Luke Shaw has suffered a concussion, and has returned to Manchester United. Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli has also pulled out of the squad, due to a calf injury. Leicester City duo Demarai Gray and Ben Chilwell have been called into the group. Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who has been struggling for game time at Chelsea this season, could be called into the starting line-up to replace Alli.

This will be only the second time that England have played at Leicester. The first time was back in June 2003, when Sven-Goran Eriksson’s team beat Serbia and Montenegro 2-1 in a friendly. Seeing how England perform in the East Midlands should be interesting.

Swiss Tend To Roll Over Against England

Switzerland returned to action after the World Cup last week with a Nations League victory over Iceland in St Gallen. It was an emphatic victory too, with Vladimir Petkovic’s team hammering the Icelanders 6-0. The goals were scored by Steven Zuber, Denis Zakaria, Xherdan Shaqiri, Haris Seferovic, Albian Ajeti and Admir Mehmedi. During the World Cup, of course, the Swiss were knocked out in the round of 16 by Sweden, who won the game in St Petersburg 1-0. Sweden went on to be beaten by England in the quarter-finals.

The Swiss have a long history of playing against England, in both friendly and competitive matches. It is not a particularly glorious history, though. In total, Switzerland have lost 16 times against the English, and won just three times. They have won just one of the last 21 meetings between the nations, with their last victory over England coming back in 1981, when the Swiss won 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier. Switzerland have never beaten England in England, drawing four and losing six of the matches between the teams which have been played on English soil. It will be interesting to see if they can improve that record this week.

England vs Switzerland Preview: Recent Meetings

England have played against Switzerland on 27 previous occasions, and have lost just three of those games. Five games have been drawn, and England have won on 16 occasions. Switzerland have won just three times, in 1938, 1947 and 1981. If you are looking for England vs Switzerland betting tips for today, it is worth noting that poor pedigree that the Swiss have when it comes to playing against the English.

The last time the two teams met was during the qualifying campaign for Euro 2016. The two sides met in Basel in September 2014, and at Wembley in September 2015. England won both games 2-0. Danny Welbeck scored both goals in the first game, netting in the 58th and 90th minutes. In the second game, the goals were scored by Harry Kane, in the 67th minute, and by Wayne Rooney, who scored from the penalty spot in the 84th minute.

England vs Switzerland Prediction: Close England Victory

Given Switzerland’s overall record against England it is hard to look beyond a comfortable home win, when it comes to predicting the outcome of this game. England, even if Gareth Southgate does decide to select an experimental line-up, should have too much strength, especially at home, for the Swiss to deal with. The English must be careful that they do not allow complacency to creep in, however, as the Swiss do have players who can do damage on the back of England errors. Our predicted scoreline is England 2-1 Switzerland.
