Fluminense vs Botafogo - Free Betting Tips

Fluminense
Botafogo

Two sides who could really do with the points face off in Rio on Sunday evening as Fluminense play host to a struggling Botafogo side at the Maracana. Although it’s a meeting of twelfth and fifteenth, either of these sides could easily end up in the drop zone, and our Fluminense vs Botafogo betting tips are testament to the fact that this is liable to be a close-run game which neither side can really afford to lose.

Fluminense vs Botafogo Betting Tips: Form Guide

Fluminense: Rio’s Weaker Side

While their Rio rivals Flamengo sit in the top four, within realistic range of picking up another Brazilian championship, Fluminense have long ago given up on local bragging rights and are focusing on the narrow, four-point gap between themselves and the sides in the relegation drop-zone. There may be eight places between them and the bottom of the table, but the teams are so tightly packed down there that a couple of bad weeks could see anyone from tenth-placed Santos pulled into the battle. Based on that knowledge, Flu are definitely not safe.

They’ve not been helped by a recent run that has seen them pick up just one win in the last five. That victory came against Corinthians, and was secured by a Gum header on 17 minutes. Fluminense were helped by a red card for visiting midfielder Angel Romero, and by the fact that the opposition played the entire game without a striker on the pitch. Aside from that meeting, Marcelo Oliviera’s men have been prone to drawing recently – picking up a creditable 1-1 draw at table-toppers Sao Paulo last weekend (good), and then a less impressive 0-0 tie at home to struggling Vitoria in midweek.

One reason there might not be huge confidence from home fans even in the face of optimistic Fluminense vs Botafogo betting tips for today is their side’s ability to drop points where they shouldn’t. Their most recent defeat came by a 2-1 scoreline against Cruzeiro, one of the lowest-scoring sides in Serie A. The defeat was sealed by an Ayrton own goal – the moral of the story being that if you’re playing a team that struggles to score themselves, don’t go around scoring for them.

Botafogo: A Defence Like A Sieve

The attacking reputation of Brazilian football has always been somewhat exaggerated, but if you look at the Serie A table you’ll see just how low-scoring the domestic league is – games are habitually decided by 1-0 or 2-1 margins, or are played out to low- or no-score draws. Unless, that is, you are Botafogo, who have developed a worrying habit of losing high-scoring games.

In their defence, Ze Ricardo’s men have been up against most of the sides at the top of the league, and in their defence they haven’t got many good players. Hence, they’ve lost 2-0 to Palmeiras, been beaten 3-0 at home by Atletico Mineiro, and most recently thrashed 4-0 by Gremio. Unless the visitors here can start to find a way to keep the opposition out, they could well fall below their current 15th position in the league and be facing a real battle against relegation.

If there is any cause for optimism in Fluminense vs Botafogo match previews, then it should come from the fact that when they have faced a fellow struggler recently, they’ve come away with the points, as they did against Sport Recife at the end of August. A 2-0 win was secured by goals from Carli and Aguirre. Meanwhile, in their most recent outing, Botafogo picked up a 1-1 draw against the tight defence of Cruzeiro. Clearly, if they can get settled into a game,  we can expect a decent showing from the visitors here, but they really need to avoid falling behind early.

Fluminense vs Botafogo Preview: Recent Meetings

These sides are meeting for the second time this season in Serie A, with the first having come at Botafogo’s Estadio Nilton Santos back in May. On that occasion, the hosts emerged with the win, in a game which came during the extremely short-lived reign of Alberto Valentim.

O Glorioso took the lead on 27 minutes through a goal from midfielder Rodrigo Lindoso, but it would be a short-lived advantage as, on 33 minutes, visiting striker Pedro would equalise for the visiting Fluminense. Midway through the second half, Botafogo would go ahead for good through Kieza. Roughly a month after that, Valentim would walk out of Botafogo to take on a job at Egyptian side Pyramids FC – one from which he has already resigned, which seems like a waste.

Fluminense vs Botafogo Prediction: Narrow Home Win

Fluminense and Botafogo are both aware of the importance of taking three points here – every point counts in the bottom half of the table, where every single team could potentially be a relegation candidate if they can’t pick up enough points between now and the end of the season. This game is liable to be a scrappy one, and the first goal could well be absolutely pivotal – if Fluminense score early, then Botafogo’s propensity to concede more could be decisive. However, if the visitors get the opener, then it could be the home side’s tendency to get bogged down in niggly matches that turns the game.

In this contest, we have to view Fluminense as favourites. Botafogo have been fine in home games (mostly) against sides beneath them in the league, but when they travel they face difficulties. As such, given that this game is at the Maracana, our Fluminense vs Botafogo prediction is on the home side doing enough to get the three points, and deepening Botafogo’s present crisis. Sticking our necks out, considering the relative mediocrity of both sides in recent weeks, we’d plump for a home win here, though it’s fair to say this game might well not be one for the purists.
