France vs Australia Betting Tips: Form Guide

Deschamps’ Lethal Strike Force

With the luxury of being able to leave strikers like Benzema and Lacazette, France are being tipped to be the providers of a lot of goals this summer. The finishing ability of Antoinne Griezmann, the pace and power of Kylian Mbappe and experience and flair of Olivier Giroud have got their fans dreaming of their second World Cup title, exactly 20 years after winning it when they hosted it in 98. Their route to the finals was relatively easy, finishing four points clear of closest rivals Sweden, and losing just one game. The squad has been settled for a while now and appear to have a close relationship, unlike in 2010 when fallouts and going out in the group stage made them hit a new low. Instead the next generation, who may well be their golden generation go into this years tournament wanting to prove something after falling at the last hurdle at the last Euro’s. After looking impressive against Italy, they could only draw against the USA in their final pre-tournament, but with big name players like Pogba and Griezmann, their fans will be expecting them to step up when it really counts.

Australia’s Long and Winding Road to Russia

Qualification for the finals has not been easy for the players. Finally getting through by winning the AFC vs CONCACAF final, they had to travel to Syria and Honduras in the space of a month, they made it through with a 3-1 aggregate score to the finals. After the exhausting long distance trips they made last autumn, they have impressed in friendlies, in particularly in the last month. Winning convincingly against the Czech Repulblic 4-0, and beating Hungary 2-1 in the last friendly, escaping from the group is a real possibility for the Socceroos. A few faces will be familiar to English football fans with this squad. Captain Mile Jedinak spent five years at Crystal Palace, spending some of that time as club captain before moving to Aston Villa a couple of seasons ago. Veteran Tim Cahill spent the second half of the season at Millwall trying to get match fitness back ahead of appearing in his fourth World Cup finals. At the other end of the age scale, a player who has caused great intrigue with fine performances in the A-League for Melbourne City is Daniel Arzani. The 19-year-old is the youngest player at the tournament, and scored in just his second appearance for his country last week.

France vs Australia Preview: Previous World Cup Meetings

The two teams meeting in the 2018 World Cup Finals is their first ever meeting in the tournament. In the four games that they have played each other in, France have won twice, with Australia winning one and the other game being a draw. Australian fans will not like to be reminded of their last meeting, which was in 2013, where they were humiliated 6-0 in Paris. Before that they met twice in 2001, Australia beating them in one game in the FIFA Confederations Cup. Before that their first ever head to head was in 1994, France emerging as the winners with a 1-0 scoreline. This year is France’s 15th appearance at the finals, winning it when they hosted it in 1998. Australia have qualified for the finals five times, with their best ever performance being in 2006 where they reached the last sixteen stage in Germany.

Portugal vs Spain Prediction: Keenly Fought Draw

The first matchday in any group is always likely to be a cagey affair with early tournament nerves affecting tactics and individual players performance. The firepower that France possess should be able to carry them through this early group stage game. Players who glow on the top European stage like Griezmann and Mbappe may come as a shock to Australia’s defenders. This young and energetic side have been tipped to go all the way, and they will want to make a statement of intent with their first game. When they are clicking, this French side could be deadly, and have the players to make light work of decent opposition.

Although Australia are clearly a very capable side, and they will be delighted with their pre-tournament friendly results, they might look to contain France and focus on playing more attacking football in later group stage games. Getting the best team out of the way first may come as a huge benefit for them, and if they show a spirited display and even getting an unlikely result they will be filled with confidence, and possibly be able to make it out of their tough group.
