Irish Champion Stakes Betting Tips: Roaring Lion Can Power to Glory in Leopardstown Feature

The 2018 Irish Champion Stakes betting tips given by Betting.org experts say Roaring Lion is impossible to oppose in the prestigious Group 1 contest over 1m 2f at Leopardstown on Saturday, 15 September. Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won this Irish Champions Weekend feature race a record seven times, so his Saxon Warrior looks the obvious forecast choice. French raider Study Of Man is not to be underestimated and appeals each-way, meanwhile. Read our 2018 Irish Champion Stakes betting tips preview for full details on these horses.

More Group 1 glory beckons for Roaring Lion in Irish Champion

Roaring Lion is miles clear of his rivals on official ratings, so rates a solid bet to land a hat-trick of Group 1 successes in the feature race on day one of Irish Champions Weekend at Leopardstown on Saturday, the 1m 2f Irish Champion Stakes (15.35).

The John Gosden trained three-year-old has come into his own since being stepped up in trip following a fine staying on 2 1/2 lengths fifth of 14 to Saxon Warrior in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket back in May. He is unbeaten in three starts over the 10 furlong trip of this, kicking off that winning streak when quickening impressively to easily land the Group 2 Dante Stakes at York by 4 1/2 lengths.

Roaring Lion then ran a cracker when a two-length third to Masar in the Epsom Derby over 1m 4f, before showing a tremendous attitude to dig deep and beat Saxon Warrior by a neck in the 1m 2f Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. He has since gone to to land another Group 1 – the Juddmonte International Stakes at York – in sensational style, increasing his superiority over Saxon Warrior in the process.

After travelling strongly throughout, Roaring Lion was asked to go about his business entering the final furlong by regular pilot Oisin Murphy, then showed an electric turn of foot to quickly put a seal on the race and beat Poet’s Word by 3 1/4 lengths. He had the re-opposing Saxon Warrior a further 1 3/4 lengths back in fourth.

It was an awesome display against a field jam-packed with quality and one which earned the son of Kitten’s Joy an official rating of 126. That mark gives him 6lb and upwards in hand on his seven rivals, so it makes Roaring Lion impossible to oppose in this and we had no hesitation in making him the main selection in our 2018 Irish Champion Stakes tips as he looks in a different league.

Saxon Warrior the pick of O’Brien quartet

Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won the race a record seven times courtesy of Giant’s Causeway (2000), High Chaparral (2003), Oratorio (2005), Dylan Thomas (2006 and  2007), Cape Blanco (2010), and So You Think (2011), He saddles four in this year’s renewal and the aforementioned Saxon Warrior is undoubtedly the pick of the quartet, as he’s next best in on official ratings, so looks the most likely one to chase home Roaring Lion.

Based on their runnings in the Coral-Eclipse and Juddmonte International, Saxon Warrior is firmly held by Roaring Lion. It’s hard to make a case as to why he can possibly turn the tables, but the O’Brien team is now in much better form and he did look an exceptional prospect when quickening clear to impressively land the 2000 Guineas over 1m at Newmarket back in May.

That’s the only time he has finished in front of Roaring Lion from four meetings this season, so his rival is clearly progressing whereas Saxon Warrior has failed to live up to expectations. He is now clearly inferior to John Gosden’s charge. However, given powerful connections, Saxon Warrior cannot be totally ruled out and on form rates the obvious danger.

Should Roaring Lion underperform, then he is the one most likely to take advantage. If not, then on all known form Saxon Warrior looks booked for second place and therefore appeals as a straight forecast bet with the red-hot favourite in our 2018 Irish Champion Stakes betting tips.

Study Of Man odds appeals each-way

France won the race in 2016 with Almanzor and their sole raider this year is the Pascal Barry trained Study Of Man, who has Group 1 winning form in the book. He is also lightly-raced having won three of his five starts, so is one that should not be underestimated and looks a solid each-way contender at the odds on offer.

That success at the top level came in the French Derby over the 1m 2f trip of this at Chantilly where, after leading narrowly entering the final furlong, the son of Deep Impact  found plenty when pressed to readily beat Patascot by half-a-length. Although Study Of Man was beaten six lengths into third last time out by Knight To Behold in a Group 2 at the same venue, that run came after a 73-day break.

He shaped as if needing the run and was very tenderly handled behind the enterprisingly ridden winner. It’s worth bearing in mind that his only other defeat also came after a break, so that outing should have sharpened up Study Of Man and put him spot on for this.

This race has clearly been earmarked as his early autumn target and he looks primed to run a big race. Study Of Man thus features as the each-way punt in our 2018 Irish Champion Stakes betting tips and bookmakers are paying three places to a fifth of outright win odds.
