Harry Angel looks hot stuff in Haydock’s Sprint Cup

On official ratings, defending champ Harry Angel has tons in hand on his rivals; so he looks a worthy favourite to retain his crown in the 6f Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock Park on Saturday (16:15). The Clive Cox trained colt totally destroyed the opposition 12 months ago when beating Tasleet by four lengths on testing ground and is unbeaten in two starts over course and distance.

In that stunning success, he made virtually all under regular pilot Adam Kirby and cruised clear from the two marker to win with his ears pricked. It was a simply sensational performance and one which saw him end the year as the highest-rated sprinter on the planet with a rating of 125 in the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings.

It’s a mark which gives Harry Angel 7lb and upward in hand on his 11 rivals in this year’s renewal, so he is going to be very hard to beat despite the fact that he’s not raced since injuring himself in the stalls in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot back in June.

Prior to that, Harry Angel also looked as good as ever when making a winning return to action in a Group 2 at York’s Dante meeting where he scored readily by two lengths from Brando. His claims are glaringly obvious and he looks impossible to oppose.

Providing he behaves in the stalls, this looks his for the taking. On all known form, Harry Angel simply had to be the main selection in our 2018 Sprint Cup betting tips and – if trading at odds against – is real value.

James Garfield looks sure to give it his best shot

If Harry Angel fails to live up to expectations, then the George Scott trained James Garfield could be the one to take advantage judged on his cracking second last time out in the Group 1 Prix Maurice De Gheest at Deauville. The three-year-old looked the likely winner until getting collared close home and beaten a neck by Polydream.

He also finished 2 1/2 lengths in front of The Tin Man, who was beaten 5 1/2 lengths when third to Harry Angel in this last year, so there is no real reason why he should not confirm the form with that re-opposing rival. It was a career best performance from James Garfield and the son of Exceed And Excel has now won twice and been placed twice from five starts over the 6f trip of this.

There’s also some solid form in the book over further he brings to the table, having beaten Expert Eye in a Group 3 over 7f at Newbury on seasonal reappearance at Newbury before finishing a solid seventh of 14 to Saxon Warrior in the 2000 Guineas on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket. That could be a plus, given the testing conditions and bring his stamina into play.

James Garfield also goes well for jockey Frankie Dettori and is the second highest rated in the line-up off 117. So, he has lots going for him and holds solid each-way claims with most of the runners playing for places behind the red-hot favourite here.

Irish raider Speak In Colours the each-way value

Irish raider Speak In Colours has proven form on testing ground and comes into the race on the back of a career-best effort when landing a Group 3 at The Curragh by 1 1/4 lengths  from Gordon Lord Byron. The Joseph O’Brien trained three-year-old stuck to the task to be well on top at the finish; so, despite this being much tougher, could well outrun his huge odds.

Prior to that victory, he wasn’t beaten too far when 15th of 22 in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot where he was held-up and given too much to do having found himself in an uncompromising position in a messily run race. After just seven career starts, of which he has won three, the son of Excelabration should have more to offer.

He does face a mountain to climb on official ratings, however, as he is a massive 14lb below Harry Angel. In a race where many will be inconvenienced by the underfoot conditions, though, it would be no surprise to see him put in a big run.

So, at the odds on offer, Speak In Colours may be overpriced in relation to the going and it would be no surprise to see punters latch onto him to make the frame if the ground remains far from sound. We therefore put him up as the each-way punt among our 2018 Sprint Cup betting tips from Haydock.
