Ryanair Gold Cup Betting Tips

The 2019 Ryanair Gold Cup betting tips from Betting.org experts say the top rated Mengli Khan has run some big races in defeat this season. He can gain a deserved Grade 1 success in the 2m 4f feature chase at Fairyhouse for trainer Gordon Elliott on Easter Sunday, 21 April. Real Steel is also a course winner and therefore rates the main danger. His Willie Mullins stable companion Voix Du Reve is also one to consider in this small but select field of five. Mengli Khan appeals most in Ryanair Gold Cup

Leading Irish owners Gigginstown House Stud have leading claims of a third success in the Grade 1 Ryanair Gold Cup over 2m 4f at Fairyhouse on Easter Sunday in the shape of Mengli Khan (16:25). This Gordon Elliott trained six-year-old has run some big races when placing at this elite level since switching to fences and this looks a golden opportunity for a win.

That is because Mengli Khan is rated 3lb and upwards clear of his four rivals and has improved since being stepped up to this trip. The son of Lope De Vega was a very useful novice hurdler after recording a Grade 1 course win over the smaller obstacles in the Royal Bond here in December 2017.

His 5 1/2 lengths success over Early Doors saw Mengli Khan stay on well and shape as though further would suit. Connections kept him over 2m for the rest of last season though and, while he didn’t go in again, he ran some huge races in defeat.

Places in Supreme and at Punchestown Festival

They include when beaten just a couple of lengths and third to Summerville Boy on desperate ground in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the 2018 Cheltenham Festival. Mengli Khan filled the same spot in the Punchestown equivalent, before connections switched his attention to chasing.

After easily winning his bow over fences by 10 lengths at Punchestown on reappearance, he was pitched straight back into Grade 1 company in two runs at Leopardstown. Mengli Khan simply lacked the foot to get involved with the pacy Le Richebourg and a step up in trip followed.

Although beaten about nine lengths by Defi Du Seuil in the JLT at this year’s Cheltenham Festival, he pecked on landing three out but held every chance over the penultimate fence. Mengli Khan just had no extra up the Cheltenham hill, but plugged on for a place and the form has been franked by runner-up Lostintranslation.

Intermediate trip ideal

A flatter track like Fairyhouse clearly suits him, as demonstrated when a three-length third to old hurdles rival Kalashnikov in the Grade 1 Manifesto Novices’ Chase at the Aintree Grand National meeting when last in action. Regular jockey Jack Kennedy forfeited plenty of ground taking Mengli Khan around the outside and made a slight mistake three out.

This is easier and a far weaker renewal of the Ryanair Gold Cup than last year. Now returning to the scene of his greatest triumph, Mengli Khan can profit from that and give race sponsor Michael O’Leary the chance to win his own money.

With question marks hanging over his rivals and Elliott’s yard in reasonable form, we recommend Mengli Khan as the one to be on here. He heads 2019 Ryanair Gold Cup betting tips as a result. Just don’t expect the race to throw up a subsequent Cheltenham Gold Cup winner like 12 months ago.

Real Steel feared most

Only five in total go to post and Willie Mullins, who won this for the first time last year with Al Boum Photo, saddles two. Of his pair, preference is for Real Steel despite the fact stable jockey Ruby Walsh is riding the other mount, Voix Du Reve. Both are rated 151, but neither has particularly convinced with their jumping.

Real Steel is also a six-year-old and therefore open to the most progress. Paul Townend’s mount has about nine lengths to find on Mengli Khan on Cheltenham form, but is a course winner after easily landing a beginners event here over an extended 2m 5f by 10 lengths from Beyond The Law back.

You can certainly question what Real Steel beat, but he then followed-up in a rated novice chase at Thurles when dropping back in trip to 2m 2f and winning by the same margin. He then blundered badly at the seventh in the JLT and faded up the Cheltenham hill having disputed fourth turning for home.

As with Mengli Khan, a flatter track may suit Real Steel better and he has only ever won races going right-handed. Fairyhouse fits the bill and he put in his best jumping performance over the bigger obstacles to date here in January. It’s for those reasons that the son of Loup Breton is rated the biggest danger ahead of his stable companion.

Don’t discount Voix Du Reve either

While Elliott also has another iron in the fire in Cubomania who does have a distance win under his belt, that one has posted better form at sharper trips. The progressive profile of JP McManus runner Winter Escape has a large blot on it, meanwhile, when a well below par fifth and reportedly bursting blood vessels last time out.

More or less by default, that leaves the other Mullins mount Voix Du Reve for the shortlist. Although the seven-year-old has failed to complete his previous two starts, the pick of his form suggests he is in with a chance granted a clear round. Good ground looks to be key for this son of Voix Du Nord and that’s likely to be the underfoot conditions here.

Chance on pick of form

Voix Du Reve won a couple of minor hurdles events in taking style at the beginning of this season before going over the larger obstacles and landing his first two starts in this sphere. After beating Mind’s Eye at Galway in October, he followed-up with a Grade 2 success in the Craddockstown at Punchestown.

The runner-up Hardline came out and landed a Grade 1 at Limerick over Christmas which advertised the form very nicely. Voix Du Reve then finished a place in front of Mengli Khan when a 4 3/4 lengths third to Le Richebourg in the Racing Post Novice Chase at Leopardstown, where he lacked the winner’s turn of foot.

Costly errors have ended subsequent races but, if he can cut those out, Voix Du Reve should be involved in the finish now tackling 2m 4f over fences for just the second time. He completes our 2019 Ryanair Gold Cup betting tips on a novice chase which lacks the class of recent renewals.
