Topham Chase Betting Tips

The 2019 Topham Chase betting tips given by Betting.org say the classy Janika is capable of defying top weight to provide trainer Nicky Henderson with a seventh winner of the 2m 5f Grade 3 handicap at Aintree on Friday, April 5. Ballyhill is feared most given trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies’ record over the Grand National fences. Scottish raider Forest Des Aigles, meanwhile, also has course form in the book and looks weighted to go well at a big price, so therefore appeals each-way. Read our in-depth 2019 Topham Chase betting tips preview for more details on these horses’ chances on Ladies Day of the Grand National meeting.

Janika taken to strike for Henderson in Topham

Trainer Nicky Henderson has an excellent record in the Topham Chase and Janika looks worth a bet to defy top weight and further enhance it with victory in this year’s renewal of the 2m 5f Grade 3 handicap at Aintree on Friday (16:05). The Seven Barrows handler has won the race six times, including three of the last five runnings.

In Janika, he has an unexposed six-year-old who had some useful form to his name when trained in France and has posted three cracking efforts in defeat since joining him at the start of the campaign.

After finishing a fine second to Hell’s Kitchen at Ascot, the son of Saddler Maker failed by just a head to overhaul Sirruh Du Lac in a competitive 11-runner Grade 3 handicap chase at Cheltenham off a mark of 150.

Strong Cheltenham form

He stayed on strongly to go down fighting and has since run a stomer off 6lb higher to finish a three-quarters of a length runner-up to the same rival in the 22-runner Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate Handicap Chase at last month’s Cheltenham Festival.

Janika got slightly hampered and lost vital ground when taking closer order at the seventh , so it was too his credit that he stuck to the task gamely and managed to get so close at the line. Judged on that display, the step up to the 2m 5f trip of this looks sure to suit.

Indeed, he won over it on his final start in France for trainer Guy Cherel and another plus is that he is versatile as regards ground. Despite being put up another 6lb to a rating of 162, Janika looks a graded performer in the making and retains stacks of potential going forward.

So, despite having to shoulder the welter burden of 11st 12lb, he looks the form horse and class act in the race. A repeat of his latest effort is going to make him tough to beat granted a clear round and, taking everything into account, he had to be our main selection in these 2019 Topham Chase betting tips.

Ballyhill looks sure to go well

There are obviously a host of dangers, but one of the most interesting is Ballyhill who represents dual Grand National winning trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies. The Gloucestershire handler has also won this twice before and saddles two here with Flying Angel also trying the spruce fences.

It’s Ballyhill who is preferred of the stable’s pair, however, as he is an Aintree winner who has run some solid races in defeat since. A line can be put through his last run when biting off more than he could chew when a distant third to Clan Des Obeaux in the rearranged Grade 2 Denman Chase at Ascot.

Prior to that, however, Ballyhill filled the same spot in two competitive Grade 3 Cheltenham handicaps. He was beaten less than five lengths by Aso in the first of those on New Year’s Day and the winner has since run an absolute stormer when runner-up to Frodon in the Ryanair Chase at the Festival.

Ballyhill was then a keeping on 9 1/4 lengths third to the aforementioned Siruh Du Lac and also behind main selection Janika. He now meets the runner-up on 7lb better terms. Given this is over the Grand National fences, that could give him a chance of turning the tables.

All of our Topham Chase betting tips suggest looking at the each-way angle with bookmakers paying enhanced place terms. Granted a clear round, Ballyhill looks a solid bet to make the frame especially given he didn’t run at Cheltenham and Janika did have a ding-dong battle there.

Forest Des Aigles appeals each-way

Of those at bigger odds, Forest Des Aigles looks lively outsider and each-way value. This progressive seven-year-old hails from the Perthshire yard of Grand National winning trainer Lucinda Russell and has a tremendous strike rate – having won five of his 13 starts over the larger obstacles.

He looked better than ever in the last of those on seasonal reappearance at Ayr in November when beating Monbeg River by three lengths off a mark of 130. Forest Des Aigles overcame a mistake four from home when closing and, after taking up the running at the last, forged clear on the run-in to score with real authority.

It was a most taking display and the son of Balko was value for more than the winning margin. The runner-up had previously run well to finish third in a decent class 2 here, whilst the fourth home Acdc went into the race having landed the Bobby Renton at Wetherby in good style.

Forest Des Aigles got put up 4lb for that and ran a solid race off his revised rating of 134 when a 10-length fifth of 11 to Warriors Tale in the Grand Sefton over this course and distance. He made stealthy headway from the rear under Henry Brooke and held every chance on the run-in until hanging badly left at the famous elbow and weakening late on.

He also signalled that his time was near last time out when runner-up at Ayr and, despite being nudged up 2lb for that, Forest Des Aigles remains nicely treated on the pick of his form off a revised rating of 133. Hence he features as the each-way punt and completes these 2019 Topham Chase betting tips.
