Top Notch the 32Red Casino Chase choice

The big race over fences at Kempton Park this Saturday is a classy renewal of the Listed extended 2m 4f 32Red Casino Chase (14:05), and Top Notch looks a value bet to land the spoils. This Nicky Henderson trained son of Poliglote registered three Grade 2 successes after a pipe opener over hurdles last season, so should be well up to winning this.

Top Notch, who sports the two-tone green colours of owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, was a Grade 1 winning novice after landing the Scilly Isles Chase at Sandown in 2017. He led at the last and was then shaken up by Daryl Jacob to score by five lengths from Baron Alco – a key yardstick for reading this race.

As he then placed on both subsequent starts at the spring UK jumps festivals, connections had a very useful horse stepping into open company last season. Top Notch followed-up on a spin over hurdles on reappearance at Aintree with a facile eight-length win over Double Shuffle in the Grade 2 1965 Chase at Ascot.

Trio of Grade 2 successes

This was visually very impressive from him, and don’t forget the runner-up then chased home Might Bite in the 2017 King George over 3m at this venue when beaten just a length. Connections then aimed Top Notch at the Peterborough Chase, but official home Huntingdon couldn’t stage the fixture last season and it was run at Taunton instead.

That didn’t stop him beating the previous renewal’s winner and stablemate Josses Hill readily by 3 1/4 lengths. While Top Notch then failed to fire when beaten 20 lengths and fourth to Waiting Patiently in the Grade 1 Ascot Chase, the form is still strong and that’s down to the third horse Frodon.

As Frodon has come out this season and won the Grade 2 Old Roan Handicap Chase at Aintree, chased the aforementioned Baron Alco home in the BetVictor Gold Cup and then improved past that one when carrying top weight to victory in the similar Grade 3 Caspian Caviar Gold Cup at Cheltenham, that advertises things very nicely. Top Notch was only 2 1/2 lengths behind the now 169 rated Paul Nicholls inmate, so his own mark of 162 may underestimate his ability.

Proven at a higher level

That Grade 2 hat-trick came when produced two out and running on well from the last to land the Oaksey Chase over an extended 2m 6f at Sandown on the final day of last season. Top Notch has again used a hurdle race, this time the Grade 1 JLT Long Walk at Ascot, for his reappearance run and was far from disgraced on his first crack at 3m when a 5 3/4 lengths third to Paisley Park.

If, as expected, that pipe opener over the smaller obstacles is a run he comes on for like last season, then Top Notch looks primed to resume winning ways. This is very competitive for a Listed event, but those Grade 2 victories highlight how consistent the eight-year-old is.

Now eased considerably in grade and sure to strip fitter for his return to action, it just had to be Top Notch heading our 32Red Casino Chase betting tips. He’s the value bet at the odds on offer for a stable still going great and thus appeals most.

Charbel feared most

Official figures and the race terms cannot split Top Notch from Charbel, whose trainer Kim Bailey is having a fine season. He is thus the obvious danger in a competitive renewal where a few will fancy their chances of victory.

Charbel followed in Top Notch’s hoofprints by gaining a deserved big race success in the Peterborough Chase last time out. That was a career best from the son of Iffraaj, who is three from 10 over fences but has bumped into some top horses in his chase career to date.

Altior and Politologue account for some of Charbel’s high-profile defeats, and the former in particular is the reason why connections have stepped him up in trip this season. After finishing a 5 3/4 lengths third to Hammersly Lake on reappearance in a class 2 Perth handicap, the eight-year-old just held the aforementioned Baron Alco by a head at Chepstow.

Beaten Baron Alco and career best success

It was a sustained duel to the line, but Charbel toughed it out and the runner-up went on to capture the BetVictor Gold Cup as mentioned above. While Politologue then confirmed Tingle Creek form by proving half-a-length too good for him in the 1965 Chase, he then made most to land the Peterborough easing down by eight lengths.

He was value for more than the winning margin as a result and Charbel also reversed Perth form on Hammersley Lake. Although now 6lb worse off at the weights with Charlie Longsdon trained veteran, a 21-length beating at Huntingdon will take some overturning despite the favourable terms.

It leaves Charbel with his own strong claims of going in again here. However, his winning record is inferior to Top Notch and it’s for that reason that we side with the Henderson horse in our 32Red Casino Chase betting tips.

Black Corton an each-way bet

Grade 1 course winner Black Corton is looking to bounce back from being pulled-up in the Ladbrokes Trophy, and is another eased in grade here. The Paul Nicholls trained eight-year-old is two from three career starts at the venue and landed the Kauto Star over 3m during Christmas 2017. That form here means he cannot be ruled out either and thus looks the only each-way alternative.

Black Corton has struck up a really great partnership with Bryony Frost and the plucky pair won many admirers throughout a busy campaign last season. Open company has been tougher for the son of Laverock, but a string of solid displays in top novice races demonstrate his ability.

Whether this trip is too sharp after campaigning in staying chases for most of last term remains to be seen. Black Corton followed-up on his Kauto Star success over subsequent Welsh Grand National hero Elegant Escape with victory in the Grade 2 Reynoldstown Novice Chase at Ascot when eight lengths too good for Ms Parfois.

Although then fifth in the RSA at the Cheltenham Festival and fourth in the Mildmay at Aintree, it was a long season for Black Corton. While Frost did well to stay in the stable after a big blunder down the back straight on reappearance in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby and chase Definitly Red home, the pair were always struggling to get involved in the Ladbrokes Trophy.

This is easier for Black Corton, so if treated on the pick of his form he could easily bounce back and hit the frame here. He therefore completes our 32Red Casino Chase betting tips as an each-way alternative ahead of the aforementioned Hammersly Lake.
