Champ can live up to his name in Ballymore

Champ has looked the real deal in winning both his starts this season and is a worthy favourite to complete the hat-trick in the 2m 5f Grade 1 Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle that gets proceedings underway at the Cheltenham Festival on Wednesday (13:30). This Nicky Henderson trained seven-year-old, who is named after 20-time champion jump jockey Sir Anthony McCoy, has won five of his seven starts under Rules – finishing runner-up on the two other occasions.

The JP McManus owned son of King’s Theatre made a total mockery of his opening handicap mark of 139 on seasonal reappearance at Newbury when tanking along throughout and easily beating Le Musee by 4 1/2 lengths in what looked a competitive 15-runner class 2 affair.

It was a performance which suggested he was an exciting prospect that needed keeping firmly onside, and that view was confirmed in no uncertain manner when Champ took the step up into Grade 1 company on his stride to land the extended 2m 4f Challow Novices’ Hurdle at Newbury in December.

Challow form must be respected

After travelling and jumping supremely well throughout, Champ quickened up smartly after the last to easily beat Getaway Trump by 2 1/2 lengths. The form looks strong as the runner-up has since run very well to finish fourth in the valuable Betfair Hurdle at Ascot, whilst the fourth home Brewin’upastorm was going well and in the lead next time out in a Grade 2 here when coming to grief in the last.

There is no reason why Champ should not confirm that form with the re-opposing Brewin’upastorm, and the step back up to 2m 5f holds no fears as he already has winning from over the trip. He is also versatile as regards ground and unbeaten in two starts under Barry Geraghty, who is once again in the saddle.

It’s impossible to find any chinks in Champ’s armour and his claims look crystal clear despite the presence of respected Irish raider Battleoverdoyen in this. Hence he features as the standout bet in these 2019 Cheltenham Festival Wednesday betting tips.

Santini has a super chance in RSA

Champion trainer Henderson looks to hold leading claims of a quick-fire big race double on the card with Santini in the Grade 1 RSA Novices Chase over 3m (14:10). This seven-year-old developed into a top class staying hurdler last season when winning three of his four starts and finishing a cracking third to Kilbricken Storm in the Albert Bartlett at this meeting.

Connections always maintained that whatever the strapping Santini achieved over the smaller obstacles was a bonus, as he was bred to come into his own went going chasing. There was certainly lots to like about his debut over the larger obstacles at Newbury back in December when beating Rocky’s Treasure by four lengths in a Grade 2.

After being held-up by Nico De Boinville, Satinti made a mistake at the 11th and lost his place. He then rallied into third before four out and was back on the bridle two from home. The son of Milan was then a length down and far from fluent at the last, but quickly gathered up by his jockey and stayed on strongly to win going away at the line.

More scope to get even better

It was a taking display which suggested Santini had the potential to go right to the very top over fences and, although beaten when sent off favourite for the Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices’ Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day, he ran really well to finish a 3 1/2 lengths third to La Bague Au Roi.

Santini was doing all his best work at the finish at a sharp track which didn’t play to his strengths and the return to this stiffer, more galloping venue is sure to suit. The winner also received a healthy 7lb sex allowance and has since gone on to land a Grade 1 at Leopardstown – so it was a fine effort in defeat and the form looks very solid.

He does face a formidable rival in the shape of Irish raider Delta Work, who is unbeaten in three starts over fences, but is lightly-raced and has more scope and potential than the Gordon Elliott trained six-year-old who heads the betting. So, at the odds on offer, Santini looks decent value and therefore features as the next best bet in these Cheltenham Festival Wednesday betting tips.

Meticulous the each-way play in Bumper

Unbeaten Irish trained duo Blue Sari and Envoi Allen are battling it out for favouritism in the Grade 1 Champion Bumper (17:30). They both look really exciting prospects, but at the odds on offer Meticulous makes plenty of each-way appeal. This Joseph O’Brien trained five-year-old impressed when making a winning debut at Killarney last July and looks to be building up to a big performance judged on his two starts this season.

After looking ring rusty when fourth to Benruben at Leopardstown, the son of Irish Derby winner Fame And Glory duly came on a bundle for that outing when chasing home the aforementioned Envoi Allen in a Grade 2 at the same venue. Meticulous travelled nicely in fourth place on the heels of the leaders and kept on well without being able to match the winner when beaten just over a length.

Although he now meets that rival on 3lb worse terms, it was an effort which suggested there was much better to come from Meticulous. Connections of Envoi Allen say he is a stayer, meanwhile, and fear this test may be too sharp for him.

The trip is certainly ideal for Meticulous, while another plus is he has the services of Group 1 winning flat rider Donnacha O’Brien in the saddle. Everything points to a bold bid, so that’s why Meticulous gets our each-way vote and this completes these 2019 Cheltenham Festival Wednesday betting tips.
