Clarence House Chase Betting Tips

Clarence House Chase betting tips from Betting.org say Altior, who is unbeaten over hurdles and fences, simply can’t be opposed in this 2m Grade 1 feature at Ascot on Saturday, 19 January. Fox Norton, meanwhile, is the obvious forecast choice to chase the long odds-on favourite home despite an almost 400-day absence. Diego Du Charmil completes the field, but has the most find on official figures and looks third best. Read more about this race below in our detailed Clarence House Chase betting tips preview.

Altior a class apart in Clarence House

Unbeaten chaser Altior just cannot be opposed on all known form for the Grade 1 Clarence House Chase at Ascot on Saturday (15:35). The opposition is running scared from Nicky Henderson’s stable star and 2m division kingpin, who looks to have this entirely at his mercy.

This nine-year-old hasn’t lost a hurdle or chase contest, outclassing all-comers in a glittering career to date. Altior’s Grade 1 victories include the 2016 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, 2017 Arkle Challenge Trophy and last year’s Queen Mother Champion Chase.

The triple Cheltenham Festival hero has also twice landed the Celebration Chase at Sandown, and took his record at the Esher venue to four from four on reappearance when capturing the Tingle Creek. Altior simply switched gears after jumping the last and cruised clear of three-time Clarence House winner Un De Sceaux to score by four lengths.

Willie Mullins’ popular veteran doesn’t bother to re-oppose here, despite his superb record in this race. That has left just two rivals for Altior, who he has well held on previous meetings. He notably thrashed Diego Du Charmil by 19 lengths when giving him 3lb and dropping to Grade 2 level last time out in the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton.

As he is 8lb clear of Fox Norton on official figures, off level weights there is simply no looking past the red-hot jolly. However, Altior is a very short price to make it 17 out of 17 over obstacles and the only way to improve prohibitive odds is to put him in a forecast bet. That’s what our Clarence House Chase betting tips recommend.

Fox Norton the forecast fancy

BHA ratings only have Fox Norton anywhere near the same parish as Altior here, so he’s the obvious forecast choice. Colin Tizzard’s nine-year-old does have to belie 389 days on the sidelines, but this isn’t exactly the most competitive of Grade 1s.

We haven’t seen Fox Norton since he pulled-up in the 2017 King George VI Chase at Kempton. He was trying 3m for the first time then and simply didn’t get the trip, so is dropped back here to a distance that he has two Grade 2 wins and a Grade 1 victory at.

Fox Norton has lined up against Altior before when giving him 5lb and beaten 13 lengths in the 2017 Game Spirit Chase at Newbury. He was always held and a rematch off level weights is unlikely to see that form reversed as the son of Lando is short of race fitness.

As Fox Norton is rated 11lb superior to Diego Du Charmil, that is a big gap for the third horse in the field to bridge even with fitness on his side. With Fox Norton sure to come on for the run, he remains the one most likely to chase Altior home.

Diego Du Charmil has too much to find

Official figures say Diego Du Charmil has 19lb to find on Altior and, as he was beaten 19 lengths in the Desert Orchid, it looks a solid judgement. The Paul Nicholls trained seven-year-old’s presence ensure this isn’t just a match, but it remains the smallest Clarence House field in recent years.

Like Fox Norton, who stunned Un De Sceaux in the 2017 Punchestown Champion Chase, Diego Du Charmil is capable on his day of pulling off a shock. He bridged a 14lb ratings gap on Irish raider Petit Mouchoir to land the Grade 1 Maghull Novices’ Chase at the Aintree Grand National meeting back in April by 2 1/2 lengths.

In three starts in open company since, however, Diego Du Charmil has struggled to get competitive. Altior has beaten him 16 lengths in last season’s Celebration Chase as well as that wider margin victory last time out and, barring accidents, there is no reason to think he will get any nearer.

As his form is simply nothing like the level achieved by Altior or Fox Norton, Diego Du Charmil can’t be anything other than a distant third. Our Clarence House Chase betting tips thus recommend the straight forecast with the favourite running out a ready winner and Tizzard’s charge finishing second.
