Newbury Betting Tips For March 23

The Newbury betting tips for March 23 on Betting.org give their three best bets for the seven-race Saturday card at the Berkshire venue. Valdez is on a handy mark at present and hails from the red-hot yard of Alan King, so rates the NAP bet in the 2m 3f Doom Bar Handicap Chase. Friend Or Foe impressed when scoring on debut for Paul Nicholls and looks to have got in lightly in the 2m 2f juvenile handicap hurdle, so is therefore our next best bet. Chic Name, meanwhile, looks weighted to go well in the 3m 2f handicap chase that gets proceedings underway so appeals each-way. Find out more about these horses in our in-depth preview with Newbury betting tips for March 23.

Valdez can reign supreme for in-form King

Trainer Alan King has his team in terrific form and Valdez looks to hold leading claims of providing him with another winner in the 2m 3f Doom Bar Handicap Chase at Newbury on Saturday (15:50). This 12-year-old has suffered plenty of injury setbacks and not been the easiest to train, but has an impressive strike rate of just under 28 per cent over the larger obstacles.

He was a very smart novice chaser in 2013-14 when winning three times, with the last of those successes coming in a Grade 2 at Doncaster off an official rating of 152. Valdez also ran well in a similar grade affair at Ayr wehn runner-up to Eduard off 152 and is now able to race off a reduced rating of 143.

That gives him major claims at the weights on the pick of his form, and he comes into this contest having run really well over course and distance last time out when third of 16 to San Benedeto in the Greatwood Gold Cup. Valdez showed plenty of pace to chase the leaders and, after pecking at the 12th, got outpaced two from home.

Decent run in Greatwood Gold Cup

However, he then rallied well and finished off strongly to be nearest at the finish and beaten 4 1/2 lengths. He now meets the runner-up Gala Ball, who finished two lengths in front of him, on 2lb better terms and that may well be enough to turn the tables given how the race panned out.

There is also a chance that Gala Ball could “bounce” – excuse the pun – as that was his first run after a lengthy spell on the sidelines, so Valdez looks the safer betting proposition of the pair. He is also a course winner, has his ideal underfoot conditions and hails from a yard that is operating at a strike rate of 31 per cent in the last 14 days at the time of writing.

This small field should also play to his strengths, so there is nothing not to like about his profile for this. That’s why Valdez features as the the standout punt in our Newbury betting tips for March 23.

Friend Of Foe fancied for juvenile honours

In the 2m 2f juvenile handicap hurdle (14:40), the Paul Nicholls trained Friend Or Foe looks weighted to take all the beating. This four-year-old shaped quite well in two starts in France and impressed when making a winning debut for the Ditcheat handler at Taunton back in December.

The son of Walk In The Park made all in the hands of Harry Cobden and was in a clear lead when clouting the last flight. He quickly gathered his momentum and then only had to be ridden out with hands and heels to comfortably beat Zafar by 1 1/4 lengths.

Friend Or Foe was value for more than the winning margin and the runner-up has run well in two subsequent starts, finishing second at Sandown and third at Fontwell off an official rating of 127. That suggests that the assessor may well have taken a real chance in allotting Friend Or Foe an opening handicap mark of just 128.

That could seriously underestimate his ability as it was a polished performance which suggested there were plenty of more races to be won with him. It’s also interesting that Friend Or Foe has not run since, as that suggests Nicholls has resisted the urge to do so to protect what he believes to be an exploitable handicap mark.

The tongue-tie also now goes on for the first time and Coben is once again in the saddle. Friend Or Foe looks to have been laid out for this and has far more potential than the majority of his rivals. Hence he features as the next best bet in our Newbury betting tips for March 23 on this seven-race card.

Chic Name weighted to go well in opener

Having been cut some slack by the assessor, Chic Name looke weighted to go well in the 3m 2f handicap chase that gets proceedings underway (14:05). This Richard Hobson trained seven-year-old ended last season on a high when landing a 12-runner affair at Perth by 1 3/4 lengths off a mark of 126.

He got put up to 132 for that and has largely struggled in four outings this season. However, he wasn’t disgraced on his penultimate outing when a keeping on sixth of 16 to Classic Ben, before finding 3m 6f beyond him last time out when seventh of 15 to Dawson City in the Devon National at Exeter.

Chic Name has since been dropped another pound and is now able to race off a rating of 125. That is 1lb lower than when last victorious and gives him every chance at the weights on the pick of his form – now dropped back to a more suitable trip at a venue where he has won in the past.

The booking of highly-talented claimer Jonjo O’Neill Jr to do the steering also catches the eye. It will be the first time that he has ridden for the yard and he is terrific value for his 5lb claim. Chic Name also has a 40 per cent strike rate in this grade (class 3), so has more going for him than his odds would suggests. He thus features as the each-way punt and completes these Newbury betting tips for March 23.
