Kempton Betting Tips For February 23

The Kempton betting tips for February 23 see Betting.org expert give their three best bets for the cracking seven-race Saturday card at the Sunbury-on-Thames venue. Angels Breath put in a stunning display when making a winning debut under rules, so rates the NAP bet to follow-up in the Grade 2 Dovecote Novices’ Hurdle over 2m. Secret Investor, meanwhile, has shaped with plenty of promise in two starts over fences and is our next best in the extended 2m 4f Grade 2 Pendil Novices’ Chase. Burrows Edge looks nicely treated on return to action in the 2m 5f handicap hurdle that gets proceeding underway, and therefore makes plenty of  each-way appeal. Find out more about these horses in our in-depth preview with Kempton betting tips for February 23.

Angels Breath taken to deliver in Dovecote

Angels Breath looked a hugely exciting prospect when making a winning debut under rules and is strongly fancied to follow-up in the 2m Grade 2 Dovecote Novices Hurdle on a cracking card at Kempton this Saturday (15:00).

This five-year-old hails from the yard of Nicky Henderson, who has won the race a record eight times courtesy of Over The Counter (1988), Flown (1992), Kimanicky (1996), Premier Generation (1999), Shatabdi (2007), Forgotten Voice (2013), Days of Heaven (2015) and River Wylde (2017).

The son of Shantou won his sole start in an Irish point in tremendous style. After racing prominently throughout, he took up the running approaching the last before forging clear on the run in to easily beat Tanrudy by 12 lengths.

Angels Breath was snapped up by owner Dai Walters after that visually taking success and sent to join Seven Barrows handler Henderson, who described him as “a horse I think an awful lot of”. The reigning UK champion jumps trainer had no hesitation in pitching him straight into Grade 2 company and the Kennel Gate at Ascot back in December, where he was sent off a heavily-backed 6/4 favourite.

Supreme fancy

Supporters of Angels Breath never had an anxious moment as, after tracking the leaders travelling powerfully, he took up the running on the bridle two from home before quickening clear to impressively beat Danny Kirwan by 4 1/2 lengths. It was an awesome display as he put in a slick round of jumping and never had to be asked any serious question to get the job done with the minimum of fuss.

Angels Breath is currently a top-price 13/2 on the back of it for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle that gets proceedings underway at next month’s Cheltenham Festival. Judged on the manner of his Ascot victory, he looks a key contender for that Grade 1 contest.

He’s therefore fully expected to take this en route to better things and we had no hesitation in making Angels Breath the NAP selection in our Kempton betting tips for February 23.

Secret Investor the Pendil punt

Trainer Paul Nicholls is in red-hot form at present and has won the Grade 2 Pendil Novices’ Chase an incredible 10 times since 2006, so his Secret Investor looks value to get the better of Bags Groove in this year’s renewal of the extended 2m 4f contest (13:50).

After landing his sole Irish point, this seven-year-old showed progressive form in eight outings over hurdles for the Ditcheat handler – winning three times and placing on four occasions.

He landed the Grade 2 Persian War Novices’ Hurdle at Chepstow on seasonal reappearance in good style when keeping on strongly to readily beat Double Treasure by two lengths, after which he had his attentions switched to chasing.

There was lots to like about his debut over the larger obstacles when runner-up to Bags Groove in a Grade 2 at Wincnaton, where he took time to warm to the task but stayed on nicely to go down by six lengths.

Better off at the weights with Bags Groove

Secret Investor backed that up with a solid six-length second to the very highly regarded OK Corral in a four-runner Listed affair at Warwick, where he had a couple of useful types in Rocky Treasure and White Moon in behind. The son of Kayf Tara is clearly going the right way and appeals as the type to keep on progressing with his racing.

He also now meets Bags Groove, who disappointed when stepped up to 3m last time out at this venue, on 5lb better terms. That means there is little to separate them on adjusted ratings, with Secret Investor having just 3lb to find on that rival.

So, with Nicholls operating at a strike rate of just over 34 per cent in the last 14 days at the time of writing, there is lots to like about his chances in this and he thus rates our next best bet on the card.

Burrows Edge weighted to go well in opener

In the 2m 5f handicap hurdle that gets proceedings underway (13:15), Burrows Edge looks weighted to go well on return to action now dropped back in grade. Also trained by Henderson, this six-year-old shaped with plenty of promise when fourth on hurdles debut at this venue before going on to land his next to starts in good style.

Burrows Edge then got turned over in his hat-trick bid when sent off the 2/5 favourite and beaten eight lengths into second by Luckofthedraw in a five-runner affair at Ffos Las.

He made a couple of costly errors that day on bottomless ground, but put in a much better performance on his final start of the campaign when an eye-catching sixth of 20 to Ballymoy in a hot class 2 handicap hurdle over 2m at Sandown off an opening mark of 130.

Sandown form is strong

After racing at the rear, the son of Martaline made headway on the outside two from home and responded well for pressure to be nearest at the finish and beaten just six lengths. The winner is a useful sort who has won three times since to be rated 152 and the race has thrown-up a whole host of subsequent winners.

It gives the form a strong look in relation to this lower grade class 3 contest, and Burrows Edge is able to race in it off an unchanged mark. Judged by the way he stayed on that day, the step back up in trip is also sure to suit and he is 1-1 in class 3 company.

So, with the stable also in fine form, Burrows Edge looks to have lots going for him in this. Hence, at the odds on offer, he features as the each-way punt and completes these Kempton betting tips for February 23.
