2019 Dubai Gold Cup Betting Tips

The 2019 Dubai Gold Cup betting tips on Betting.org say Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter looks a worthy favourite to land the 2m Group 2 contest at Meydan on Dubai World Cup night; Saturday, 30 March. Charlie Appleby trained stable companion Ispolini looks unexposed as a stayer, so is feared most ahead of Prix du Cadran winner Call The Wind. Prince Of Arran, meanwhile, was placed behind Cross Counter at Flemington and looks each-way value to make the frame again now back up in trip. Cross Counter taken for winning return in Dubai Gold Cup

The first new qualifying race for the Weatherbys Hamilton Stayers’ Million bonus is the Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan this Saturday (12:50), and Cross Counter looks a worthy favourite to give trainer Charlie Appleby a first-ever winner of the valuable event. This Group 2 staying test over 2m on turf during Dubai World Cup night was won by owners Godolphin in the first two years it was run.

In Cross Counter, the boys in blue have a four-year-old Teofilo gelding that is still unexposed at this trip. After winning twice on the all-weather at Wolverhampton and showing progressive form in Ascot handicaps, he smashed the course record over 1m 4f at Goodwood when landing Group 3 Gordon Stakes at the Glorious meeting.

Cross Counter won easing down from Epsom Derby runner-up Dee Ex Bee by 4 1/2 very cosy lengths. Although then just beaten a head in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur at York’s Ebor Festival by stable companion Old Persian, who has come out and won here since, he finished 1 1/2 lengths ahead of subsequent St Leger victor Kew Gardens.

Leading form claims

That strong form in and amongst Classic horses meant Cross Counter went Down Under for the race that stops a nation with every chance. He delivered in the Melbourne Cup, becoming the first British trained winner of Australia’s best known event for horses, when coming wide with a strong run under pressure to hit the front close home and score by a length.

As he was impeded early on and denied a clear passage over two out, this performance from Cross Counter on his first start over the trip of this can be upgraded. He had the re-opposing Prince Of Arran, who he now meets on 1lb better terms, a further two lengths behind in third and Irish Derby runner-up Rostropovich beaten 4 1/2 lengths.

Four-year-olds get weight from their elders in this. Taking that into account, Cross Counter is 4lb and upwards clear of the field on adjusted ratings. He has the best form on offer and proved he can win big international races. We thus had no hesitation in putting Cross Counter, who is now reunited with jockey William Buick, up as our main selection in these 2019 Dubai Gold Cup betting tips.

Ispolini heads dangers

Prix du Cadran winner Call The Wind is next best on official figures, but as a five-year-old must give 6lb away. The main danger at the weights instead looks to be Ispolini, another Godolphin horse (the owners have four in the 10-runner field) who is unexposed as a stayer and a stable companion of Cross Counter.

Also trained by Appleby, this son of Dubawi has run well in handicap company before bolting up on his latest start over 1m 6f. Ispolini has plenty of course experience on his side after chasing home Bin Battuta off level weights and then successfully stepping up a couple of furlongs.

He then proved himself better than a handicapper in the Group 3 Al Sheba Trophy when making smooth progress before two out and taking things up a furlong and a half from home. Ispolini thrashed the re-opposing Red Galileo by 10 1/2 lengths and clearly has nothing to fear from him.

Using Dee Ex Bee as a form marker – a horse Ispolini was 3 1/2 lengths behind in the Chester Vase – he has a bit to find on Cross Counter, however. That is reflected in the fact they are rated 4lb apart, but the way in which he won so authoritatively last time out was very taking and suggested a further step up in distance would be no problem.

It’s Ispolini therefore who can give his fellow Appleby inmate Cross Counter most to think about in this. There is definitely more to come from him and so the gelding is another well worth considering, according to our 2019 Dubai Gold Cup betting tips, now over 2m for the first time.

Prince Of Arran each-way value

The aforementioned Prince Of Arran now meets Cross Counter on 1lb worse terms from the Melbourne Cup. Although the Charlie Fellowes trained six-year-old was only eighth in this race 12 months ago, he was never near enough to mount a challenge. He did run on, however, and recent outings suggest he stays, so he looks the each-way value.

This globetrotting son of Shirocco was a fine second at Newcastle on the all-weather when runner-up to Withhold in the Northumberland Plate. As he was giving the winner 5lb and was only beaten 2 3/4 lengths, it was a great effort from Prince Of Arran.

He then went Down Under and ran well in three starts that culminated in that Melbourne Cup third. Prince Of Arran was a closing 1 1/2 lengths third to Yucatan in the Group 2 Herbert Power Handicap at Caulfield and then landed the Group 3 Lexus Handicap at Flemington, both when back down in trip to 1m 4f.

Although headed entering the final furlong of the Melbourne Cup, he did stay on. A run in the Hong Kong Vase after a long campaign can be disregarded, and Prince Of Arran also looks sure to come on for his reappearance when fourth to Old Persian at this venue. He therefore completes our 2019 Dubai Gold Cup betting tips as the each-way choice.
