Charcor holds leading claims in Irish Cambridgeshire

The big betting race at The Curragh on Saturday is the Irish Cambridgeshire Handicap (16:00) and in a typically fierce, wide-open renewal Charcor looks overpriced and well worth an each-way wager at the odds on offer. This four-year-old hails from the yard of Jessica Harrington, who has enjoyed a terrific season so far.

She also boats a strike rate of just under 20 per cent with her runners at the top Irish venue and, in Charcor, has an unexposed and improving four-year-old who looks potentially ahead of his mark. After shaping with promise when a tenderly handled third on debut, the gelding duly showed the benefit of that experience when keeping on strongly to beat Mazzuri, who has won since, at Gowran Park.

Charcor then ran very well in a rated race last time out at Killarney when second of eight to Monkeylou, where he was deemed by many to be an unlucky loser as nothing went to plan. After being slowly away when the gates opened, the son of Choisir quickly found himself with a huge amount to do.

It looked a forlorn task, but Chacor then rattled home to be beaten just half-a-length. Given how the race panned out, it was fine effort to get so close late on and one which suggested he needed keeping onside.

Charcor is now able to race in handicap company for the first time off an unchanged rating of 93, so that makes him a massive player from a handicapping perspective. Further improvement also looks assured, so everything looks in place for a huge run.

Terzetto looks sure to make bold bid

Trainer Michael Halford has pulled off some big gambles in races of this nature. His main contender looks to be Terzetto, who has had just four starts – winning twice and making the frame on the two other occasions – and is a progressive and unexposed sort who looks to have been laid out for this.

After finishing a promising runner-up on debut at Dundalk to Could It Be Love, who is now rated 107, this three-year-old daughter of Iffraaj easily opened her account at the same venue when scoring by three lengths. Terzetto then ran a solid race on handicap debut over this course and distance when third to Hence before getting back on the scoresheet, again at this venue and over the trip, when beating Surrounding by a neck.

She was value for more than a winning margin, so a 4lb rise in the weights could well be on the lenient side. A revised rating of 97 could still seriously underestimate Terzetto as she’s lightly-raced and has bags of untapped potential.

The fact that she’s also got proven course form is another plus. There is nothing not to like about Terzetto’s profile for this, so she looks a worthy favourite and leading each-way contender among our 2018 Irish Cambridgeshire Handicap betting tips.

Firmament another each-way option

In a race in which its is hard to rule out the chances of most of the 22-runners, Firmament is another with each-way claims. The David O’Meara trained six-year-old is on a long losing run and often finds trouble in-running.

When the cards do finally drop right, however, he is weighted to go in again and has some rock solid form in hot big field handicaps. Firmament’s last success was at York in 2016 where he beat Mustashry by half-a-length off a mark of 96.

He went on to post some solid efforts in defeat last season, including third in a Listed contest at Ascot off an official rating of 109. The gelding is now able to race off a reduced rating of 99 and comes into the race on the back of some decent runs, finishing a 3 1/2 lengths seventh of 17 to Seniority in the Golden Mile at Goodwood – when luckless in-running – and a close-up third at York last time out when once again denied a clear run at a vital stage when travelling strongly for much of the contest.

This race will be run to suit Firmament and he is due a change of luck. The booking of Declan McDonough to do the steering is also a positive one, and if he can cajole Firmament into putting his best foot forward, then he looks capable of making his presence felt and making the frame at least
