Lavazza Stakes Betting Tips: Hat-Trick Seeking Midi Appeals Most for Ascot Handicap

Midi, Ghostwatch and Berkshire Royal feature among potential punts for Betting.org experts in their Lavazza Stakes betting tips from Ascot on Saturday, 8 September. Midi is a unexposed improver for the Sir Michael Stoute yard, so rates the main bet in this 1m 4f Heritage Handicap. Ghostwatch won in terrific style last time out and is feared most, while Berkshire Royal is a consistent sort with leading each-way claims. Lost to like about Midi in Lavazza Stakes

The progressive and unexposed Midi looks worth a punt to land the hat-trick in the big betting race at Ascot on Saturday, the Lavazza Stakes (15:55). This Sir Michael Stoute trained three-year-old has won both his starts this season and looks to have been targeted at this valuable 1m 4f Heritage Handicap.

After undergoing wind surgery, this son of superstar Frankel out of Group 1 winner Midday left the form of his sole run as a juvenile well-behind when overcoming an absence of 326 days to make all and readily land a nine-runner maiden at Windsor last month by 1 1/4 lengths. In-form handler Stoute then turned him out quickly in a 1m 2f allowance contest at Newcastle where he stayed on gamely to beat the highly-regarded Spanish Archer by a head.

Midi was always holding the runner-up, who had run out a wide-margin winner on his previous outing, and he had to win to get a handicap rating and be eligible for this. An opening mark of 88 may well underestimate the three-year-old’s ability and he is certainly bred to be better than it.

It could well be that Midi is a potential pattern performer in the making, while he’s the least exposed in the line-up and open to stacks of improvement. The step up to 1m 4f also promises to suit and he looks to have been campaigned with this race in mind.

So, with the stable remaining in good form and definitely more to come from him, Midi is taken to go in again and thus had to be the main selection in our 2018 Lavazza Stakes betting tips.

Ghostwatch looks sure to go well

There are plenty of potential dangers in a wide-open renewal. The main one could be top-weight Ghostwatch, who comes into the contest following a career-best effort when landing the valuable 16-runner Melrose Handicap over 1m 6f at York in tremendous style.

After travelling well throughout, this Charlie Appleby colt who is owned by Godolphin took up the running pulling double two from home and then only had to be ridden out inside the last to readily beat Supernova by half-a-length. Ghostwatch was value for much more than the winning margin, so a 6lb rise looks more than fair.

The three-year-old should not be inconvenienced by the drop back in trip, as he has won once and been placed twice in two starts over it. William Buick, who partnered him on the Knavesmire, also has a good record on him with two victories and a place in four outings.

Ghostwatch has also built up a really solid profile and has now won three of his six starts this season. He is clearly thriving and on an upward curve, while handler Appleby is on fire at the moment – boasting an incredible strike rate of just under 43 per cent with his runners in the last 14 days at the time of writing.

Everything suggests a bold bid is on the cards, hence why Ghostwatch had to feature among our potential punts for this. That hike in weights may not be enough to stop him going in again, so you can see why he rates the biggest danger to our main pick.

Berkshire Royal the each-way bet

Trainer Andrew Balding is another that has his team in fine form. He is represented by the tough and consistent Berkshire Royal, who has some solid form in the book and makes plenty of each-way appeal at the odds on offer.

This three-year-old has won three of his seven starts and finished runner-up on the four other occasions. In the last of those successes, the son of Sir Percy stayed on strongly to get up close home and score by a neck at Chester.

Berkshire Royal got put up 4lb for that, but ran a blinder off his revised rating of 82 when a two length runner-up to Cross Counter over this course and distance. The winner went on to break the course record when landing the Group 3 Gordon Stakes at Goodwood by 4 1/2 lengths and then went down by just a head to Old Persian in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur at York.

The third home Elegiac also scored next time up, as did Gossip Column who finished a well beaten fourth, and the sixth home Desert Path. It gives the form a rock solid look and, although now 3lb higher in the weights, Berkshire Royal has since run well to finish runner-up at Chester.

That rise is also negated by the 3lb claim of red-hot apprentice Jason Watson. It suggests Berkshire Royal is still weighted to be very competitive in this and he holds leading claims of making the frame at least, so is our each-way bet among the 2018 Lavazza Stakes betting tips.
