Triplicate can go one better in Future Champions Novice Hurdle

Three JP McManus owned horses in particular are fancied at Leopardstown on the second day of their Christmas Festival. In the 2m Grade 1 Future Champions Novice Hurdle (13:50), Triplicate can go one better than when runner-up at this level last time out.

Trained by Joseph O’Brien, this son of Galileo and a Danehill Dancer mare won twice on the Flat for father Aidan before switching to jumps. Triplicate got off to a winning start on his second try over hurdles at the Galway Festival in August when a comfortable 3 3/4 lengths victor and then followed-up at Listowel.

The form of that novice hurdle contest where he stayed on well to beat Aramon by 1 1/4 lengths looks rock solid as he’s held that rival in two subsequent starts in graded company. On both of those occasions Triplicate ran into Quick Grabim, but in his absence can cash in and get some black type.

As he heads those with an official ratings and top Racing Post figures, Triplicate looks the sort capable of giving a 7lb sex allowance to McManus’ other iron in the fire in mare Sancta Simona. With jockey Mark Walsh riding two winners on the opening day of the meeting, everything is in place for a big run and Triplicate thus heads our Leopardstown Christmas Festival day 2 betting tips as the NAP.

Ballyoisin the Sugar Paddy punt

Prior to the big novice hurdle is the other Grade 1 on this card, the 2m 1f Sugar Paddy Chase (13:15) in which Ballyoisin has stronger claims than his odds suggest. Although trained by Cross Country discipline specialist Enda Bolger, the seven-year-old comes to Leopardstown on the back of a runaway career best success.

While there is strong opposition in the shape of Footpad and another McManus owned sort with huge potential in Great Field, both of those rivals have questions to answer. Even before taking a tumble at Naas, Footpad didn’t look on song and has now lost the aura he built up as novice.

Stable companion Great Field, meanwhile, fell when a red-hot favourite for the Grade 2 Hilly Way Chase at Cork won by Castlegrace Paddy. The former is a delicate sort, who jumps exuberantly but clearly hasn’t been the easiest to train following a number of setbacks.

Career best at Navan

Ballyoisin has no such doubts hanging over him like the Willie Mullins trained duo, and is actually the big improver in this select field of seven. His huge 23-length success in the Grade 2 Fortria Chase at Navan is worthy of respect, as it brought up a hat-trick of success over fences and a four-timer if including the Listowel Handicap Hurdle triumph at the Harvest Festival.

Using the Navan runner-up Ordinary World as a form line through which to compare the selection to Great Field, who beat him just 11 lengths at Punchestown back in April off level weights, that suggests Ballyoisin – who gave 3lb away to the runner-up – has the beating of the other McManus runner. Footpad is another matter of course, but plenty short enough for a horse that looked beaten prior to coming to grief last time out.

At the odds on offer, then, Ballyoisin is a great bet to continue his progress and make it five wins out of six in 2018. He thus rates the next best bet of our Leopardstown Christmas Festival day 2 betting tips and Castlegrace Paddy would’ve also been an each-way option if eight or more runners turned up.

De Name Escapes Me solid each-way value

The Paddy Power Chase later on (15:00) is a fiercely competitive renewal of the Grade B extended handicap where a case be made for most of the 28 runners. De Name Escapes Me is still well-treated in relation to his hurdles mark, however, and one of the many sporting McManus’ silks as he seeks to plunder this valuable 3m prize.

Noel Meade’s eight-year-old is by Irish St Leger icon Vinnie Roe and, despite turning out under a double penalty, he’s still racing in this off a mark that is 10lb lower over fences than the smaller obstacles. It makes De Name Escapes Me, who won the Foxrock over 2m 4f at Navan completely unextended and with tons more in hand than the half-a-length winning margin suggests, look a potential handicap blot.

While carrying a whole stone more than the mark of 119 he last ran off, the 14lb rise simply may not be enough to stop De Names Escape Me defying the assessor. The Navan form is rock solid, as the front two pulled nine lengths clear of the third.

De Name Escapes Me has run really well in three previous starts in equally tough handicap hurdles, winning the Brown Lad at Naas off 130 by 4 1/4 lengths. He is over fences off just 3lb higher here and has run well over staying trips before, so he is well worth backing each-way in a race where bookies are offering extra places and completes these Leopardstown Christmas Festival day 2 betting tips.
