National Stakes Betting Tips: Quorto Taken Over Anthony Van Dyck in Curragh Group 1

Betting.org give their 2018 National Stakes betting tips on this Group 1 contest for juvenile colts run over 7f at The Curragh on Sunday, 16 September. Quorto has impressed in winning both his starts to date, so is taken to land the spoils and provide owners Godolphin with a third winner of the race. Trainer Aidan O’Brien has won three of the last four renewals and therefore his Anthony Van Dyck rates the main danger. Christmas, another O’Brien inmate, looks the each-way value. For full details read, our 2018 National Stakes betting tips preview for this key Classic trial.

Quorto the one to be on in National Stakes

Quorto looks worth a wager to get the better of a fascinating clash with Anthony Van Dyck and land the spoils in the feature juvenile colts contest at The Curragh on Sunday, the Group 1 National Stakes (16:15). This Charlie Appleby trained colt has looked a top notch prospect in winning both his starts to date.

After registering an impressive 2 3/4 lengths success on debut at Newmarket, the son of Dubawi took the step up into Group 2 company in his stride when running out a sensational winner of the Superlative Stakes at the same venue. Quorto only had to be shaken up by William Buick at the furlong market to quicken clear and win going away by 3 3/4 lengths from Cape Of Good Hope.

It was a supremely authoritative display and one which earned him an official rating of 115 – that is the highest in this line-up which puts him 5lb clear of main market rival Anthony Van Dyck. He looks a potential Classic contender in the making and is bidding to follow in the footsteps of his father, the aforementioned Dubawi, who landed this after success in the Superlative back in 2004.

Connections have saved Quorto for this, and that is a big plus at this stage of the season. He also has a potent turn of foot and that could prove to be the difference in this. With Buick once again in the saddle, Quorto had to be the main selection in our 2018 National Stakes betting tips to provide owners Godolphin with a third winner of the race.

Anthony Van Dyck out to enhance O’Brien’s formidable record

The aforementioned Anthony Van Dyck is the clear pick of four runners for Ballydoyle handler Aidan O’Brien, who has an incredible record in the race having won it 11 times since 1996 – including three of the last four runnings. This highly-regarded s son of Galileo is unbeaten in three starts since finishing seventh on racecourse debut so has to be feared.

After landing his maiden at Killarney by eight lengths, Anthony Van Dyck followed-up in impressive fashion in a Group 3 at Leopardstown when forging clear inside the last to easily beat Bold Approach by 4 3/4 lengths. He has since landed the Group 2 Futurity Stakes over this course and distance when bearing stable companion Christmas by half-a-length.

However, he didn’t win like an odds-on shot as he should and had to be niggled along on several occasions before finally getting on top close home. It was a workmanlike display, and one which suggested he was a grinder and the type to come into his own over middle distances next season.

Indeed, Anthony Van Dyck is currently a top priced of 14/1 and second-favourite for next year’s Epsom Derby. He is clearly a very talented juvenile, but he hasn’t shown anything like the turn of foot of Quorto, so that could make him vulnerable at the business end of affairs of this 7f test.

He also has 5lb to find on ratings with that main mark rival who has bags of untapped potential. For those reasons, we had to come out in favour of Appleby’s charge in our 2018 National Stakes betting tips.

Christmas another with claims

If there is to be an upset, the Anthony Van Dyck’s stable companion Christmas could be the one to provide it given that he was only beaten half-a-length by him in the Futurity. That was a career-best performance and this son of Galileo had won his previous two starts, so is clearly going the right way.

Christmas opened his account at the third time of asking when scoring easily by 3 1/2 lengths at Roscommon. He then rallied gamely to follow-up in a Listed contest at Tipperary to beat Highland Fortune by a neck. That was a really gutsy display as the runner-up briefly headed him and looked the likely winner a furlong from home.

An official rating of 107 means that he also has just 2lb to find on Anthony Van Dyck. Given that Christmas is progressing with each outing, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that he could turn the Futurity form around. So, at the odds on offer, he had to feature as the each-way punt in our 2018 National Stakes betting tips in case the market principals disappoint.
