Rockfel Stakes Betting Tips: Main Edition Value for Second Newmarket Win

The 2018 Rockfel Stakes betting tips from Betting.org say Main Edition is worth a wager to land the spoils in this 7f Group 2 contest for juveniles fillies. Irish raider Just Wonderful is the main danger if bouncing back to form at Newmarket on Friday, 28 September. Away from the joint top-rated pair, Canton Queen is one to consider backing each-way. Our 2018 Rockfel Stakes betting tips has further details of these fillies’ hopes.

Main Edition can make more headlines with Rockfel victory

Main Edition is on a 50 per cent strike rate at Newmarket, so looks real value to make it two wins from three at the Suffolk venue for trainer Mark Johnston in the 7f Group 2 Rockfel Stakes for juvenile fillies on Friday (15:00) now eased in grade. She is one of two in the nine-runner line-up to be rated 107 – well clear of everything else in opposition.

Already a dual Group 3 winner, Main Edition is by Zoffany and landed each of her first three starts over 6f showing progression with every outing. In the last of those in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, she showed a real game attitude and found plenty for pressure close home to hold useful yardstick La Pelosa by a neck.

Connections then pitched Main Edition into Group 2 company and sent her to the July Festival here. That unbeaten record was lost in pretty unlucky fashion when she was badly hampered by all sorts of trouble in-running during the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes.

A line should be put through that effort – something Main Edition demonstrated next time up when making all and scoring at headquarters when stepped up to 7f for the first time in the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes. She confirmed the Royal Ascot form with La Pelosa, so that 1 1/4 lengths victory has a much more solid look to it.

Main Edition was then sent over to Ireland for the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes on Champions Weekend and was far from disgraced when a five-length fifth to Skitter Scatter. She again tried to make all, but still finished five lengths in front of the re-opposing Just Wonderful, who is her main market rival for this.

Given that, it is odd to see some bookies making the pair joint-favourites for Rockfel glory as there were no excuses for the Aidan O’Brien runner on home soil. As she’s a typical front-running type from her yard, Main Edition will make this an endurance test and – if allowed to dictate proceedings – may be hard to peg back.

This is obviously much less competitive than that Irish assignment last time out, but a repeat of that makes her the one to beat. It’s that Group 1 form that sets a clear standard here which makes Main Edition our feature bet in these 2018 Rockfel Stakes betting tips.

Just Wonderful respected

Joining the Johnston filly as joint top-rated on a mark of 107 is the aforementioned O’Brien trained Just Wonderful, who has five lengths to find on her fellow market principal last time out. Given her powerful connections, however, she is respected having won over further and her dam landed this race seven years ago.

After scoring by a neck on debut in a Curragh maiden, Just Wonderful was sent straight to Royal Ascot where she had excuses in the Albany. This daughter of Dansili and Wading – a mare out of Montjeu – found herself short of room and hampered a furlong from home.

That proved to be a key moment in the race and jockey Ryan Moore soon eased Just Wonderful when it was clear she couldn’t win. It leaves the bare form open to question, but she then couldn’t find any extra close home when third to another Johnston juvenile Marie’s Diamond despite a 3lb sex allowance in a Curragh Group 3.

O’Brien then stepped Just Wonderful up to a mile in the Flame Of Tara Stakes on her penultimate start, and she finally justified favouritism when leading inside the final furlong under a hands and heels ride to score cosily from stablemate Peach Tree by a 1 1/2 lengths. This was much more like it, but she left that run behind when a disappointing 10-length seventh to Skitter Scatter on Irish Champions Weekend.

There were no excuses unlike her previous run behind Main Edition at Royal Ascot, yet the assessor has not cut Just Wonderful any slack on that unchanged 107 rating. As she also held an entry in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stud Stakes over 6f here on Saturday, connections clearly still have faith in her.

As both Just Wonderful and Main Edition are 5lb and upwards clear on official figures, they should be putting in the best showing here. If returning to the promise of her 1m victory, then there she can still give our main selection something to think about as the rest of the field has so much to find.

Canton Queen worth an each-way bet

With double figure prices available on all but the market principals and the improving Roger Varian trained filly Yourtimeisnow, there’s plenty in with an each-way shout if one of those three fail to live up to expectations. Trainer Richard Hannon saddles two in the hope of hitting the frame, and preference is for Canton Queen over Ajrar based on the potential she showed last time out.

The daughter of Shamardal is out of an Oasis Dream mare and caught the eye at Leicester on the second of her two career starts to date. Victory despite showing signs of greenness in that novice event was progress from Canton Queen coming eighth on debut at this venue.

There was plenty to like about the way she stayed on well and soon drew clear inside the final furlong for a 2 1/4 lengths success last time out which suggests she may be well worth a crack at this level. Canton Queen is the only runner in the line-up who hasn’t been given a mark, but has clear potential.

Although this demands more, she is the least exposed of the nine here and therefore open to the greatest amount of progress. On what she could be, Canton Queen is put up each-way in our 2018 Rockfel Stakes betting tips, though a case can be made for many.
