Thomas Darby value in Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Trial

Thomas Darby has some strong form in the book, so looks decent value to land the spoils in the feature race at Newbury this Friday, the 2m Grade 2 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Trial (12:55). This Olly Murphy trained five-year-old has won two of his three starts under rules and looks an exciting prospect.

After scoring in good style on his sole start in a bumper, he then made a winning bow over hurdles when landing a competitive 13-runner contest at Cheltenham in terrific style. Thomas Darby was held-up at the rear early doors, before making stealthy headway travelling well three fome home.

He then challenged at the last before showing a smart turn of foot to forge clear and beat Elixir De Nutz by 3 1/4 lengths, despite showing distinct signs of inexperience and wandering on the run-in. It was a very taking display, and the runner-up is unbeaten in two starts since, including when landing a Grade 2 at the same venue to be rated 140.

That gives the form a very strong look, and Thomas Darby has since lost little in defeat when runner-up to Didtheyleaveuoutto over this course and distance last month when going down by just a head following a titanic tussle after the last.

The form of those races sets the standard in this and Thomas Darby is officially the highest rated in the line-up off 138. It makes him the one to beat and that’s why he features as the main selection in our Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Trial betting tips.

Highly-touted Angels Breath feared most

Angels Breath makes his eagerly awaited debut for trainer Nicky Henderson, who has a tremendous record in the race. The Seven Barrows handler is the most successful in the prestigious trial with five victories since 1994, including 12 months ago with Claimantakingforgan.

In Angels Breath, he has four-year-old who created a huge impression when winning his sole start in an Irish point where he raced prominently throughout and powered clear on the run-in to easily beat Tanrudy by 12 lengths.

It was a visually taking display and a performance which marked Angels Breath out as a potentially very exciting prospect. He was purchased by owner Dai Walters after that and Henderson has described him as “a horse I think an awful lot of.”

The fact that he has decided to pitch Angels Breath straight into Grade 2 company tells of the high regard in which he’s held and he is currently a best-price 25/1 for the actual Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival next March – despite not having had a race under rules.

It makes Angels Breath a fascinating contender in this for a stable operating at a strike rate of 23 per cent in the last fortnight at the time of writing. He is therefore feared most but, at the odds on offer, Thomas Darby had to be the main choice in these Supreme Novices’ Hurdle betting tips given his proven experience over hurdles.

Seddon holds solid each-way claims

There are plenty of others in with chances In what is a terrific renewal, but Seddon is the one that appeals most from an each-way punting perspective. He was not at his best last time out when third in a Grade 2 at Cheltenham when sent off the even-money favourite, but had previously looked a highly promising individual.

After making a winning debut in a bumper at Musselburgh when staying on strongly to score comfortably by five lengths, the Tom George trained five-year-old he was then far from disgraced when pitched into Grade 1 company and finishing 12th of 23 to Relegate in the Champion Bumper at this year’s Cheltenham Festival.

Seddon appealed as the type that would come into his own when sent hurdling. There was lots to like about the way in which he landed a 10-runner contest at Stratford on debut over the obstacles, where he quickened clear after the last to beat Not That Fuisse by 4 1/2 lengths.

The turn of foot shown by Seddon was impressive and the runner-up has since finished a fine sixth of 13 in the valuable Grade 3 Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham, before finding only Al Dancer too good in a decent nine-runner handicap at the same venue. That makes the form read well in relation to this and suggests Seddon is a solid each-way contender from these Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Trial betting tips.
