Winter Novices’ Hurdle Betting Tips

Winter Novices’ Hurdle betting tips from Sandown at Betting.org say Down The Highway looks the one to be on in the feature 2m 4f Grade 2 event at the Esher venue on Friday, 7 December. Darlac is feared most on a fine fourth at this level last time out. Alan King has been a highly successful trainer in this race, meanwhile, so Alsa Mix gets the each-way vote. Read on for further details of all these horses in the 2018 Winter Novices’ Hurdle betting tips below.

Down The Highway has major claims of Winter success at Sandown

Down The Highway was a decisive winner on his hurdles debut last time out, so appeals as the type to take a step up in class in his stride and land the feature 2m 4f Grade 2 Winter Novices’ Hurdle at Sandown on Friday (14:25). The five-year-old is trained in Wiltshire by Emma Lavelle and landed an Irish point by six lengths back in February.

He then made a winning hurdles bow in a class 3 affair at Lingfield last month. Down The Highway took it up three out – having tracked the leaders – and already looked the winner over the second last. When shaken up by Aidan Coleman, he put the race to bed drawing further away to score by seven lengths.

Despite the fact the re-opposing runner-up Mercy Mercy Me made mistakes at the final two flights, he looked held at the last, so Down The Highway has nothing to fear from him here. Like many in this 10-runner line-up, he is an unexposed sort who is open to any amount of improvement.

With soft going underfoot holding no fears, Down The Highway can take this step up in grade in his stride en route to potentially bigger and better things. As he’s again partnered by Coleman, we had no hesitation in making this son of Duke Of Marmalade our main bet in these 2018 Winter Novices’ Hurdle betting tips.

Darlac one of many dangers

In what is a wide-open renewal, Darlac rates a definite danger on his fourth in the grade at Cheltenham last time out. This Colin Tizzard trained five-year-old has won one of his three starts under rules in impressive fashion after running solid races in a couple of Irish points.

After finishing a 10-length seventh in his sole bumper start, Darlac absolutely bolted up by 17 lengths over 2m 3f in a Fontwell maiden hurdle. He jumped into the lead at the first and made the rest, readily asserting in between the last two flights for a facile success.

It was a bloodless victory for Darlac and connections had every right to pitch him straight in at this level last time out in the Hyde Novices’ Hurdle off the back of it. Like the Winter, that is an official Ballymore trial and he was a far from disgraced staying on 7 3/4 lengths fourth to Coolanly.

While Darlac got outpaced after two out, he did stick to the task well to take fourth and pass a few rivals on the run-in. He is sure to have learned plenty for that outing and now has the services of Robbie Power in the saddle.

With the slight drop back in trip looking sure to suit and Team Tizzard saddling a one-two in the Ladbrokes Trophy this past weekend, Darlac is a leading form player in this. He is one of many dangers identified by our 2018 Winter Novices’ Hurdle betting tips in a race where a case can be made for most.

Alsa Mix an interesting each-way contender

Barbury Castle handler Alan King has saddled four winners of this in the last decade, so that make Alsa Mix an intriguing contender and one to consider each-way. The six-year-old mare gets weight all-round courtesy of a valuable 7lb sex allowance here and is unbeaten, having landed an Irish point, a bumper and her hurdles bow last time out.

After scoring at Worcester by five lengths, Alsa Mix stepped up to an extended 2m 2f at Exeter last month and made headway from three out having raced in touch. Although then ridden along to chase the leader after the second last, once she cleared the final flight she was in front and kept on well for a 2 3/4 lengths victory.

As Alsa Mix has already won on going as varied as heavy and good, she is clearly a versatile mare as regards ground. With soft conditions underfoot holding no fears, and Wayne Hutchinson taking over in the saddle again, this French grey looks well up to following on from some illustrious stablemates.

King has previously landed the spoils in this race with the likes of Messire Des Obeaux, who went on to capture the Grade 1 Challow Novices’ Hurdle at Newbury. Getting that 7lb from all nine of her rivals in this renewal makes Alsa Mix a good each-way bet in our 2018 Winter Novices’ Hurdle betting tips to make the frame at least.
