Inter Milan vs Tottenham Betting Tips: Form Guide

Inter Start As They Don’t Mean To Go On

On the eve of the Serie A season, all of the pundits still very much expected Juventus to win the title. What changed this summer was that many of the same pundits felt that Inter would elbow Napoli out of the way to present the biggest threat to the champions. Smart additions such as Radja Nainggolan from Roma, Sime Vrsalko on loan from Atletico Madrid, and Kwadwo Asamoah from Juventus, allied to the goals of Mauro Icardi and the retention of Luciano Spalletti in the dugut, suggested that Inter would ease serenely into the new season and perhaps even give Juve a run for their money.

That, at least, was the idea, but after four games Inter currently hold four points, and the weekend saw them lose 1-0 on home ground to newly-promoted Parma. That’s the same score by which perennial strugglers Sassuolo beat them on the opening day, and with the Nerazzurri having drawn their home opener 2-2 against Torino, this is all very far from the start to the season they were hoping for. Up to this point, Icardi hasn’t even got on the scoresheet.

Inter come into this game with just one win so far this season – a 3-0 away at Bologna. With goals from Perisic and Nainggolan easing them into a winning lead, Inter completed the job with three minutes left through an Antonio Candreva goal. Inter Milan vs Tottenham match previews will however wonder whether Icardi – who was fit enough only to be a substitute at the weekend – or loanee Keita Balde will be able to break their duck in this match.

Spurs Need A Boost

By going through the entire summer without adding a single player to their squad, Spurs were making a statement. The problem is, no-one is sure what that statement was. Either they were saying “We’re good enough, thanks, third place last season, plus our players are young and getting better!”, or “We’ve just about completed our stadium renovation, now we just have to pay for it”. Recent defeats against Liverpool and, more worryingly, Watford, have led some fans to suspect that the latter explanation for their transfer window inactivity might be the true one.

Spurs are evidently still a fine side. With Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and the impressive early-season performances of January signing Lucas Moura, they’re going to provide nightmare fuel for many a manager this season. This is before Son Heung-min, just returned from the Asian Games, is fully reintegrated into the side. However, there is no getting away from the feeling that Spurs need something more. They don’t feel like the finished article and, if they have plateaued as a top-four, last-16-in-Europe kind of side, they will begin to struggle when it comes to holding on to the stars named above.

Which is the true Spurs? The team that lost 2-1 (but it could easily have been four or five) at home to Liverpool, and which was beaten after going ahead at Watford? Or the side that travelled to Old Trafford and ripped Manchester United apart in winning 3-0? It remains to be seen, and Inter Milan vs Tottenham betting tips for today will vary depending on whether the predictor believes Spurs have the mental strength to improve from here.

Inter Milan vs Tottenham Preview: Recent Meetings

These clubs, are relatively well-acquainted, albeit there has been a significant turnover in playing staff in both squads since they met in the last 16 of the Europa League in 2013. The only holdovers from the Spurs sides that played in either of those two matches are the Belgian pair of Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele. For Inter, only the goalkeeper Samir Handanovic is still around. On that occasion, Spurs came through on away goals after drawing 4-4 on aggregate. They won the home leg 3-0 through goals from Vertonghen, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Gareth Bale. The second leg, in Milan, was just as one-sided in the opposite direction. Antonio Cassano, Rodrigo Palacio and a William Gallas own goal took the game to extra time, before Emmanuel Adebayor pinched the away goal, meaning that a late Ricardo Alvarez finish for Inter was not enough to sneak them into the quarter finals.

Inter Milan vs Tottenham Prediction: Narrow Home Win

Both of these sides come into this fixture of the back of a defeat, and with a world-class striker in questionable fitness and form. Harry Kane has had precious little rest time since – it is felt – he was rushed back from an ankle injury late last season, and then went on to pick up the Golden Boot at the World Cup. He’s scored a couple so far this season – and he tends to be a slow starter – but there is no denying he looks out of sorts. Icardi, and Inter, for their parts, have yet to really get their season up and running, and this match will be intriguing because if Inter can’t bring out their best performance here, they’ll surely struggle to do it at any time.

It’s tricky to predict a game when neither side involved is in peak form. Clearly, one or both of these teams will find their feet for at least the 90 minutes they play here, and whichever team manages it most convincingly is likely to come away with the win. In our Inter Milan vs Tottenham prediction, we will plump for the home side. As much as anything, this prediction is because they are at home, but it has a little to do with Spurs’ tendency to lose the big games. Until they can put that to rest, they’re always going to come into games like this with a question mark over them.
