Ireland vs Denmark - Free Betting Tips

Ireland
Denmark

Martin O’Neill’s Ireland face Denmark at the Aviva Stadium – nine words that are enough to cause Irish football fans to yelp in pain and roll into a ball. Optimists will make their Ireland vs Denmark betting tips on the basis that Christian Eriksen, who took the Boys in Green apart with a virtuoso performance last autumn, is likely to miss out through injury here. Nonetheless, Ireland’s last two competitive matches have seen them concede nine goals, so the visitors will be favourites here.

Even the Irish bookies don’t think much of the hosts’ chances of winning this one, with Denmark favoured by Paddy Power at 6/4 to pick up the win here. Boylesports, for their part, are offering what might be the Ireland vs Denmark best odds of the evening with a generous price of 9/1 on Age Hareide’s men to win by a realistic score of two goals to one. If you feel a little more confident about the home side’s possibilities of picking something up, then you might be attracted by the not-Irish Dafabet and their 9/2 price on Ireland’s long-range threat, Jeff Hendrick of Burnley, to score at any time in the game.

Ireland vs Denmark Betting Tips: Form Guide

O’Neill Nearing The Exit?

It’s been eleven months since the 5-1 trouncing that ended Ireland’s World Cup qualifying bid at the play-off stage, and in that time they have played in front of their own fans just once – in a 2-1 win over the USA secured by a last-minute strike from Brentford midfielder Alan Judge. Away from Dublin, Ireland’s form has been less impressive. A recent 1-1 friendly draw with Poland at least demonstrated an ounce of fight – something too often missing from an Irish side plagued by rumours of behind-the-scenes rows – but ended, as so many Ireland games do, with the Boys in Green conceding an entirely avoidable late goal after soaking up pressure.

The standout game of 2018 for O’Neill’s men has not been the 1-0 loss in Turkey in March, nor was it the creditably gutsy 2-0 loss to eventual World Champions France two months later in Paris. It was the trip to Cardiff for a Nations League game, their first competitive outing since the Denmark debacle, and it came last month. The hosts were 3-0 up by half-time through goals from Lawrence, Bale and Ramsey. Wales would add another before promising Irish midfielder Shaun Williams grabbed a consolation on his debut off the bench. Sure, this may not be Ireland’s Golden Generation, but the absence of anything resembling a coherent XI when it matters is troubling.

One of Ireland’s primary concerns is the lack of a reliable striker, and this will be commented upon in most Ireland vs Denmark match previews. Aside from battering-ram Shane Long, who’s more of a target man, half of their recent attacking call-ups have come from Preston North End. That’s a concern, given the same Preston North End are currently battling relegation from the Championship.

Can The Danes Be Great Without Eriksen?

Having brushed the Irish aside to qualify for the World Cup, Denmark did nothing to disgrace themselves once in Russia, picking up a 1-0 win over Peru and drawing with Australia before a tedious 0-0 stalemate with France sealed their place in the Last 16. Drawn against Croatia, there was a prevailing sense that a convincing defeat and elimination were to follow, but that sense was only half right. In truth, Denmark gave an excellent account of themselves, and took the eventual finalists to penalties. A fine shootout performance from Danish ‘keeper Kasper Schmeichel was, unfortunately, one penalty less fine than that of Daniel Subasic, who saved three to send Denmark home.

Since the World Cup, things have gone in interesting directions for Denmark. An away friendly in Slovakia was disrupted by industrial action from the players over commercial rights. This led to the DBU selecting a team made up entirely of Futsal players and whoever they could gather from lower-division Danish clubs. The hastily-convened Scab XI gave a decent account of themselves, but were nonetheless thrashed 3-0. Whether this had any bearing on the federation striking an interim agreement with the professionals, we’ll never know, but Eriksen and co. were back in national colours for the following game, with the main man scoring twice as Wales were beaten 2-0.

Eriksen will miss this game with a stomach muscle injury, and while that may lead some Ireland vs Denmark match previews to forecast a decent chance for Ireland, players such as Mark Delaney and Leipzig forward Yussuf Poulsen will still provide plenty of threat for O’Neill’s ragtag bunch. Is there time for another strike?

Ireland vs Denmark Preview: Recent Meetings

Irish fans won’t need any reminding of the last time these sides met. Indeed, January’s draw for the Nations League reopened a barely-healed wound, coming two months after the 5-1 shellacking that was handed out by Christian Eriksen and, we presume, ten other Danish players. To say that the Tottenham man left Ireland in tatters that night would be to understate just how much of a difference he made – Ireland could not get close to him, he scored a hat-trick and controlled the game from attacking midfield. The most galling part for Ireland fans would be that their heroes had fought out a decent 0-0 draw in Copenhagen, and just needed any home win to progress.

They even looked like they might get that win, when defender Shane Duffy headed the home side ahead on the night. Then, however, Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen fired home an equaliser, Eriksen delivered his decisive blows, and there was even time for Nicklas Bendtner to slot home a penalty as the clock ticked over to 90.

Ireland vs Denmark Prediction: Workmanlike Away Win

Denmark without Eriksen are a far less fearsome proposition than they are with him in the side; let’s admit that from the start. This game is missing perhaps the one world-class player that either of these two countries can claim. His playmaking abilities and his goal threat from inside and outside the box are enormous, and their absence has probably sealed Spurs’ failure in this season’s Champions League. Nonetheless, you’d be some way into a composite Ireland-Denmark XI before you had to reach for your green felt-tip.

The difference between the Danish side with Eriksen and without can be summed up most eloquently with our Ireland vs Denmark prediction. If he were to play this weekend, there is every chance that the scoreline from last November would be matched without it flattering the visitors. Without him, we still think Denmark will win, but they’ll have to work for it. A realistic result here would be a 2-1 away win, with Ireland eliminated from the competition and Denmark very strong favourites to win their group.
