Liverpool vs Bayern Munich Betting Tips: Form Guide

Liverpool Face Defensive Choices

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that his team can continue their fine European run at Anfield. The Reds are unbeaten in 19 consecutive European ties at Anfield, having won 14 of those games and drawn five. Their last European defeat at Anfield was against Real Madrid in October 2014, when they were beaten 3-0 by the Spaniards. Klopp will feel history is on his side, as Bayern have never scored a goal against Liverpool at Anfield on the three previous occasions that they have played there.

Klopp has a number of injury concerns to deal with before he can finalise his selection for Tuesday evening’s game. Defender Dejan Lovren will undergo a late fitness test to see if he can make the starting line-up, as he is still recovering from a hamstring injury. Fabinho could replace Lovren at the heart of the Reds defence. Virgil van Dijk is suspended for the game, and Joe Gomez has an ankle injury. In midfield, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remains a long-term absentee. In attack, Xherdan Shaqiri also faces a late fitness test. He needs to shake off an abdominal injury if he wants to be fit to face his former club.

Bayern Strong On The Road

Despite not being rated as highly by observers as they have been in recent years, Niko Kovac’s Bayern Munich team are still a formidable side. If you are looking for Liverpool vs Bayern Munich betting tips for today, it is worth noting that the German side were one of five teams to remain unbeaten in the group stages of this season’s Champions League, along with Ajax, Barcelona, Lyon and Porto. They also have a very strong recent Champions League pedigree, having reached the semi-finals of the competition in seven of the last nine seasons.  They are also unbeaten in eight games on the road in the competition, having won six and drawn two of those games.

They may have to do without Jerome Boateng for this game, though. The defender has been suffering from a form of gastric flu. He will only play if the club’s medical team decide that there is no risk of infection.

Kovac has received a boost when it comes to Kingsley Coman, though. The French forward has been declared fit for the game at Anfield after suffering a knock. Arjen Robben has also been included in the Bayern game, after not playing since November due to a thigh injury.

Liverpool vs Bayern Munich Preview: Recent Meetings

These two sides have faced each other on seven previous occasions in competitive fixtures. Their first meeting was in the Fairs Cup back in 1971, when Liverpool won a two-legged tie 4-1 on aggregate. The following season, Munich knocked Shankly’s Reds out of the Cup Winners Cup. Their last meeting in the European Cup, the forerunner of the Champions League, was back in 1981, when Liverpool won on away goals after a two-legged tie was drawn 1-1 on aggregate.

In 2001, the two sides met in the European Super Cup, with Liverpool winning 3-2 in Monaco. John Arne Riise, Emil Heskey and Michael Owen scored the Reds’ goals that day. Hasan Salihamidzic and Carsten Jancker were the goalscorers for the German side that evening.

In total, they have played each other seven times, with Liverpool winning twice, Munich once and there having been four draws.

Liverpool vs Bayern Munich Prediction: Narrow Home Win

Our prediction for this game is that it will be a real thriller, with a cracking atmosphere for the spectators in the stands to enjoy, as well as the viewers on TV. We suspect that Liverpool will start strongly, and that they could be two goals up by half-time. Bayern will be stronger once the Reds’ initial surge has subsided, though, and the second half will see them put in a much better display. They will pull a goal back, but in the end it will be Liverpool who head over to Germany for the second leg with a one-goal lead. Our predicted final score is a 2-1 home win.
