This season, we’re finding it difficult to do anything than look past Manchester City wins in the majority of games they play. For this big game against Liverpool, 6/5 odds to win at William Hill are as good as you will likely ever get for City. Kevin De Bruyne, who scored mid-week in the League Cup and is on great form this season, is 4/1 at Betfred to score anytime – a very good medium risk bet we think. Although a correct score for this game could well be hard to call, we like 2-1 to Manchester City at 8/1 with Betway if you’re tempted by a higher risk offering.

Liverpool vs Manchester City Preview

Liverpool’s ins and outs

It’s not possible to talk about Liverpool at the moment without mentioning the two big transfer stories of the January window so far. Liverpool finally got their man by securing a £75m deal for Virgil Van Dijk in the hopes of filling the gap in their defence that has so often leaked goals this season.

The other major news is the transfer of Phillipe Coutinho to Barcelona as Liverpool’s star man makes the exit to his dream club for a whopping £140m fee. Many argue that despite Coutinho’s fantastic ability and skill, Liverpool might not actually miss the Brazilian too much as they’ve got enough attacking talent to continue their impressive start to the season.

On the pitch, Liverpool have been brilliant to watch at times this season and probably come closer to Manchester City than anyone in terms of value for money for the fans. Their attacking prowess is hoping to be balanced off in defence through the introduction of Van Dijk who will likely start his first Premier League game for Liverpool after scoring in the Merseyside derby in the third round of the FA Cup last weekend.

Liverpool will undoubtedly have to be at their very best to beat a Manchester City team who have looked unstoppable so far.

Manchester City – Can they go undefeated?

We’ve just about run out of superlatives when it comes to Manchester City and they are still unbeaten in the Premier League this season. Many are now asking the question as to whether they can go the whole season without a defeat – something not done since the famous Arsenal ‘Invincibles’ team back in the 2003/04 season.

Manchester City even managed to come through a scare in the League Cup semi-final in the week as they trailed 1-0 to Bristol City at the Etihad, eventually running out 2-1 winners after a couple of late goals.

In the Premier League, they’ve been simply unstoppable. With 20 wins and only two draws so far, nobody has managed to beat City and Liverpool will be a team with the belief that they have the ability to do so if City somehow have an off-day.

If, though, City continue to look as imperious as they have throughout the season so far, it’s difficult to see Liverpool breaking them down and maintaining consistency at the back to avoid conceding goals. City have been scoring plenty as of late and will be expecting to grab one or two against a leaky Liverpool defence, even with the addition of Van Dijk for added support.

Liverpool vs Manchester City Head-to-Head

Liverpool and Manchester City fans won’t need reminding of the earlier game in the league between these two sides this season, albeit for very different reasons. Manchester City won the game emphatically by five goals to nil in a game that really showed just how seriously Guardiola’s side looked this season.

City haven’t looked back since, but it’s not always been so plain sailing for them in this fixture. Historically, Liverpool have far more wins as they used to dominate English football in a time when City’s finances simply didn’t exist.

The head-to-head between the sides is fairly even in recent years, with a couple of wins for either side and a draw in between in their last five meetings. However, City are an altogether different team this season and Liverpool will be extremely keen to prevent another embarrassment like the one they suffered in September at the hands of their title rivals.

Liverpool vs Manchester City Prediction

We think that Manchester City are impossible to look past in any game this season and although Liverpool offer more than most teams, we think City will come away from Anfield with all three points on Sunday.

A lot of the Liverpool vs Manchester City match previews will take note of Van Dijk’s inclusion to sure up Liverpool’s defence, but we question whether his influence alone will be enough to keep out Manchester City’s attacking players in a game that is almost certain to have goals.

Manchester City are rarely as good value as 6/5 to win (William Hill) and if they do beat Liverpool it’s unlikely they’ll ever be as good odds as this again, so snap them up while you can. Correct score betting is where the value is, as always, and 2-1 to Manchester City will get you 8/1 odds at Betway but as usual we suggest spreading your bets over a couple of possible outcomes. De Bruyne’s fine form this season is not to be overlooked for anytime goalscorer betting as well.
