Tuchel’s side have a lot to prove. Over the last five games they’ve scored an impressive 17 goals but, even by Ligue 1’s lower standards, none of the sides they’ve faced have been competitors. Liverpool have taken on, and beaten, a Champions League team in Tottenham, and therefore merit backing at the decent odds of 5/4 with 888sport. Perhaps the Liverpool vs Paris St Germain best odds, however, are on show at Paddy Power, who will give you 5/1 on Roberto Firmino to score first – decent odds as he’s been on target in both the Reds’ last two games. As a longer punt, in a game where both sides have their vulnerabilities, take a Correct Score bet. BetBright are touting 16/1 on the Reds emerging 3-2 winners here.

Liverpool vs Paris St Germain Betting Tips: Form Guide

Pool Show Their Depth

The summer at Anfield was very much about a show of intent – with upwards of £200million spent on quality additions rather than quantity, the message is that manager Jurgen Klopp will be aiming to deliver silverware this season. The signings were designed to address the Reds’ defensive naivete, and the verdict so far seems to be that – while not all of the old fragility is gone – Liverpool are a more robust proposition this season. They’ve had some of the old free-wheeling wins, and others they have had to gut out, but never have they looked under any real threat this season.

The weekend saw the first serious test of the “new” Liverpool, with a trip to face Tottenham and – most notably – Harry Kane. There are few greater challenges in English football than an away game against Spurs, and Klopp’s men overcame this one with a little to spare. A rare goal for Gini Wijnaldum got the ball rolling, and when Firmino added a second after 54 minutes, all ‘Pool had to do was see the game out. Although Spurs pulled one back deep in injury time, the three points always looked bound for a trip North. This followed on from a 2-1 win at Leicester, which looked closer than it needed to be thanks to an error from new goalkeeper Allison.

Those two goals are all that the Merseysiders have conceded this season, and the feeling is that they can get better from here, with Brazilian midfielder Fabinho yet to play in the first team. With seven goals scored and none conceded across three wins over West Ham, Crystal Palace and Brighton, there are plenty of reasons to trust the Liverpool vs Paris St Germain betting tips when they favour the home side.

PSG Can Win In France, But Is That All?

Thanks to their incredible material wealth, Paris St Germain are a potential destination for any footballer interested in a move, as proven when they parted Neymar from Barcelona last summer. However, with Neymar and Kylian Mbappe arriving in the same summer, eventually costing a total not far short of £400million for the pair, PSG may have widened the gap between themselves and other French sides – it’s just that the question remains over whether they are any closer to Europe’s elite. The evidence of last season’s Champions League, when they were comfortably dispatched by Real Madrid in the last 16, would suggest not.

Under the management of Tuchel, they’ve looked commanding so far. The results in their competitive games so far have been 3-0, 3-1, 3-1, 4-2 and 4-0. Pretty masterful, for sure, but the opposition has been pretty thin – of the five teams they’ve played up to now, the highest in the table as of this moment is in 12th place. In other words, PSG are yet to be tested on anything other than the easiest level. Given their stubborn problem of not being able to step it up when facing the best in Europe, there’s little reason to presume they’ll even reach the last 16 this time, from a group featuring Liverpool and Italian giants Napoli.

With that said, it will be noted in most Liverpool vs Paris St Germain match previews that the Parisians can only beat the opposition that’s put in front of them. Up to now, they’ve done that and usually without difficulty. The time to judge them may be at the end of the group stage, when we’ll know if they can live with top English and Italian sides.

Liverpool vs Paris St Germain Preview: Recent Meetings

These sides have in fact never met at senior level, so initial bragging rights are up for grabs across the two games they will play in this season’s tournament. Liverpool have had plenty of meetings with French sides over the years, notably knocking out St. Etienne on their way to winning the 1977 European Cup. The last time they met a team from Ligue 1 was in March of 2010, when they knocked Lille out of the Europa League over two legs in the last 16.

PSG, for their part, have played English teams more recently. The last time they met a Premier League opponent in European competition was in the quarter finals of this tournament in 2016. After a 2-2 draw in Paris, where Zlatan Ibrahmovic and Adrien Rabiot scored for the hosts, the tie was decided in Manchester by a single goal scored for the hosts by Kevin de Bruyne. Paris had previously knocked out another English side, Chelsea, at the last 16 stage by an aggregate margin of 4-2.

Liverpool vs Paris St Germain Prediction: Exciting Home Win

This is the kind of game that PSG have to win if they are to be considered among the top echelon of European clubs. As we have seen, they can beat top European teams here and there – they’ve won against Chelsea, and a few seasons ago were 4-0 winners over Barcelona before being hammered 6-1 in the replay. The challenge here, though, is to come through a group with sides such as Liverpool and Napoli, and finish ahead of at least one of them. To that end, they need to be targeting this game as a potential win and a statement of intent.

Intent is one thing. Achieving it is another, and the truth is that the Parisian team that takes the field tonight will look much the same as the one that seemed a million miles off being an elite side when facing Real Madrid last season. We can’t really know, yet, whether Tuchel has achieved the alchemy that turns a big fish in a small pond into something that can hold its own when it makes the step. Our Liverpool vs Paris St Germain prediction, however, is that they won’t have enough here, and Liverpool will start their campaign with the three points.
