Liverpool
Tottenham Hotspur

If Liverpool are to see their title dreams reach fruition in the 2018/19 season, it’s fair to say that they need three points from this meeting with a Spurs side who could do with a win themselves. While our Liverpool vs Tottenham betting tips will have to take account of the visitors’ recent unimpressive league form, the atmosphere at Anfield will be nervy for much of the 90 minutes – at this stage of the season a single stumble can be ruinous to title hopes.

This is a tricky one to call – Liverpool in the league recently have swung between the sublime and the barely mediocre, but they’ve still managed to pick up ten points from their last four matches. Spurs haven’t been quite so on the ball, so backing Liverpool to win at 8/13 with Betway is probably a smart choice. Perhaps the Liverpool vs Tottenham best odds of the day are Dafabet’s 7/2 on Sadio Mane to score the first goal. The Senegalese forward has been in superb form and broken the deadlock for his side repeatedly in recent weeks. Correct score betting is, again, tough to judge. We’d expect it to be close, and the best odds avilable would probably be at 888sport, where you can get 7/1 on a 2-1 home win.

Liverpool vs Tottenham Betting Tips: Form Guide

Klopp’s men doing enough right now

Early in the season, as Liverpool eked out wins to keep pace with title rivals Manchester City, the received wisdom was that eventually, the pressure of escaping with narrow victories would tell and the Reds would endure a crisis of form that would allow City to run away with things. That hasn’t happened yet, and it’s March. Indeed, Liverpool have often looked like the more consistent side. Yet the popular wisdom persists – after Liverpool drew 0-0 with Everton recently, having already dropped points at home to Leicester and at West Ham, many felt that the key momentum had been lost.

It’s all very well and good to question a team’s confidence, but let’s be clear – even if Liverpool have seemed occasionally to lack certainty, they’ve kept doing the job in tough games. A 0-0 home draw with Bayern Munich was followed by a commanding 3-1 win in Germany to secure Champions League progress. Aside from the aforementioned game against Everton, they’ve been resolute in the league too – hammering Watford 5-0 and reacting to going behind against Burnley by emerging with a 4-2 win. Most recently, at Fulham, ‘Pool went into the last ten minutes being held at 1-1 – but a James Milner penalty secured all three points.

With seven league games left, this is the toughest game on Liverpool’s calendar for the rest of the season. A win here would give them definite belief going into the closing stages of the campaign knowing that City still have a Manchester derby to play. While some Liverpool vs Tottenham betting tips for today may suggest the home side could choke, they deserve to be seen as better than that.

Spurs seeking any kind of league form

It’s odd how expectations work. When Spurs lost 1-0 to Manchester United in January, almost more painful than the defeat was the news that Harry Kane had injured ankle ligaments and was set to miss two months of action – potentially fatal to their hopes of a title challenge. In the event, Kane was only out for a month and Spurs won every game in his absence. Since his return from injury, they’ve played four games in the league and won none, losing to Burnley and Southampton along the way.

What’s gone wrong? Kane not firing on his return to action? Well, no, that’s the thing. He’s scored in all of but one of those games, as well as notching against Dortmund in the Champions League and in two games for England. The results, however, have fallen away: 2-1 at Burnley. 2-0 at Chelsea. In the North London derby, a 1-1 draw at home to an Arsenal side that continues to reel them in in the league – the sides are separated by a single point going into the weekend. In the most recent game, at Southampton, Kane’s 26th-minute strike gave Spurs the lead, but two goals conceded in the last 15 minutes meant another defeat.

You’ll have to search long and hard to find a Spurs fan offering an optimistic Liverpool vs Tottenham match preview ahead of the game. The visitors will give a more than decent account of themselves, as they have even during their shaky recent run. The problem is that they just can’t seem to accumulate points at the moment, and they could barely be going to a worse place in the hope of starting.

Liverpool vs Tottenham Preview: Recent Meetings

This is the second meeting of these sides in the 2018/19 season, with the first having come in September when the sides were separated by just three points – Spurs having won three of their first four games, Liverpool holding a 100% record at the time. The game was billed as being the first true test of the visitors’ quality, and they passed it with flying colours.

Although the 2-1 final scoreline may have suggested a close game, in truth Liverpool controlled events at Wembley from the first whistle almost to the last. They took a lead on 39 minutes through a Georginio Wijnaldum header, and doubled it ten minutes after the break when Roberto Firmino tapped home from inches out after a Mane cross had been diverted onto the post. Spurs’ goal, through Erik Lamela, arrived in the 93rd minute and was a consolation their tentative performance barely deserved.

Liverpool vs Tottenham Prediction: Nervy Home Win

If the message of last season for Spurs was that another player or two could make them a real title challenger, this season’s lesson may be that same message repeated through a loudhailer. They have a tight-knit squad and can be confident of a high standard of play in almost every game – but when they need to step it up, they are too often found wanting. That’s become ever clearer throughout this campaign, and it’s expected to be the narrative for this particular game. For Liverpool, if Salah isn’t firing then Mane will. If Naby Keita isn’t on form, Jordan Henderson will step up. At this level, a rounded squad makes a big difference.

As such, it’s hard to arrive at any Liverpool vs Tottenham prediction other than a home win. Spurs are more than good enough to make any opposition nervous, and the clash between Kane and Virgil van Dijk could be a mini-battle worth watching. By no means would you expect Liverpool to have it all their own way here, but with the positive attitude that Jurgen Klopp has imbued in his side, and with this being a game they need to win, we’d expect them to get what they need. A final score of 2-1 to Liverpool is a pretty decent bet.
