Manchester City
Liverpool

It’s only January, but this meeting between the front-runners for the Premier League could well deliver a decisive blow in the title race. Liverpool’s excellent December has seen them haul in, overtake and establish a significant cushion over the defending champions, and tonight’s Manchester City vs Liverpool betting tips suggest that Jurgen Klopp’s side could widen the gap to double figures – a margin that even Pep Guardiola would struggle to close.

The sides may have played out a 0-0 draw at Anfield in October, but a draw is of little use to the hosts here and they’ll have to come out and play. This should lead to an attacking encounter, making Ladbrokes’ 6/4 odds on more than 3.5 goals attractive. With Liverpool riding a wave of nine consecutive wins in the league, BetVictor’s price of 11/4 for them to make it ten might also be considered overly-generous even if the opposition is a cut above the usual. Finally, if you fancy a real punt, you can get 28/1 from Toals on a 3-2 scoreline in the Reds’ favour – an entirely possible outcome between two attacking sides.

Manchester City vs Liverpool Betting Tips: Form Guide

An Unhappy Christmas At The Etihad

The weekend’s 3-1 win over Southampton was a welcome result for the champions, coming as it did at the end of a month in which they lost three games, and snapping a two-game losing streak. It wasn’t the most fluent performance – the sides were locked at 1-1 until two quick goals just before half-time turned the game in City’s favour.

The two previous games were more worrying for the Etihad faithful. A home game with Crystal Palace – usually a guaranteed three points – ended in a 3-2 defeat thanks in no small part to a stunning long-range volley by Andros Townsend. On Boxing Day, a trip to Leicester again swung against the champions, when Bernardo Silva’s early opener was cancelled out by Albrighton and then another exceptional strike from Ricardo Pereira.

Defeat at the King Power did little to dispel the impression that City are a side much reduced when defensive midfielder Fernandinho is not in place. While the plaudits may more usually go to his more attacking teammates, the Brazilian’s importance was underlined in his absence through injury.

Another unsung hero, Fabian Delph, will be missing for this game, having been sent off at Leicester. Back-up left-back Danilo may well have to deal with the exceptional movement of Sadio Mane, which will not make for optimistic Manchester City vs Liverpool match previews from the home side’s fans.

Nine In A Row For Rejuvenated Reds

Shortly after a 2-1 defeat at PSG – which could have been much heavier – Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was facing questions over the seeming lack of progress made by his side in the last twelve months, especially after a summer in which big money was spent on squad reinforcements. Now, his side sits seven points ahead of the defending champions, having won every game played in December.

It has helped that Egyptian forward Mo Salah seems to be back at his best. A hat-trick in a 4-0 win at Bournemouth showed any “one season wonder” talk up for the hasty nonsense it always was, and he kept scoring as the month went on. The month also showed the importance of a deep squad; Xherdan Shaqiri, usually a substitute, bagged two goals in a 3-1 slapping of Manchester United.

Indeed, while tonight’s opponents were stumbling against mid-table sides, Liverpool were beating top-six opposition, usually handily. The weekend saw them annihilate Arsenal 5-1, Roberto Firmino scoring three, and with excellent performances throughout the month from defensive players such as Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho, Manchester City vs Liverpool betting tips for today should take account of how well the visitors have bounced back from the misery in Paris.

Manchester City vs Liverpool Preview: Recent Meetings

The sides last met in October at Anfield, in a game which ended 0-0. The match was notable for the fact that Guardiola changed his tactical approach to blunt Liverpool’s attack. The City manager, a noted football purist, broke with his usual attacking habits after three losses in a row to the Reds in the first half of 2018.

A 4-3 defeat in the league at Anfield, followed by reverses in both legs of a Champions League quarter final (3-0 in Liverpool, then a 1-2 home loss), spurred Guardiola to play an additional defensive midfielder for the October clash. It worked, to an extent, and could have led to a win but for a missed Riyad Mahrez penalty in the dying minutes.

Manchester City vs Liverpool Prediction: Thrilling Away Win

City may have succeeded in nullifying Liverpool’s attack in October and, if they had an advantage in the title race, would be well-advised to repeat that approach tonight. Unfortunately for the hosts, they have seven points to make up against a side that is unbeaten through twenty league games. They need to start chipping away at that lead.

While it’s not impossible that Guardiola could adopt a more circumspect approach for at least part of tonight’s meeting, he will at some stage need to go for it; it’s much easier to adopt such a stance from the outset than to adopt it later on. This does carry for City the threat of exposing themselves defensively, but there seems little alternative.

Given the respective league positions, and recent records, of both sides, the champions find themselves painted into a corner here. Just recently, the Reds have been expert in taking advantage of compromised opponents, and we can see it happening again here. Our Manchester City vs Liverpool prediction is on the visitors to win, in a game which may be one of the Premier League’s modern classics.
