Manchester City
Rotherham United

Manchester City follow up their thrilling victory over Liverpool on Thursday night with a home FA Cup third round tie against Rotherham United at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Millers currently sit in 21st place in the Championship, so do not look like having much chance against the reigning Premier League champions. But the ‘magic of the Cup’ can strike anywhere, and Millers fans will travel in hope.

Manchester City vs Rotherham United Betting Tips: Form Guide

City Back On Route To Success After Festive Blip

Pep Guardiola will have been delighted with the way that his team fought off a stern challenge from Liverpool in their Premier League game on Thursday night. After the Reds equalised in the second half, City were able to dig deep, lift themselves and produce a winning goal. They also suppressed the Liverpool response completely, with the Reds looking bereft of attacking ideas by the end of the game. That victory was also their second in a row, after they suffered the ignominy of losing back-to-back games over Christmas. Following that 3-2 home defeat to Crystal Palace, and the 2-1 defeat away at Leicester City, it will have pleased Guardiola to have bounced back with an important victory over their main rivals for the Premier League title. Now the squad’s focus must switch again, and it is vital for the players to avoid complacency.

Guardiola will not be able to call on Fabian Delph, who is still suspended after his red card in the defeat to Leicester. Star midfielder Kevin de Bruyne is doubtful, despite training this week. The Belgian is struggling with a muscle issue.

Millers Travelling In Hope

Paul Warne’s Rotherham side will surely be travelling more in hope than expectation this weekend, with the players looking to enjoy the occasion rather than produce an upset. They might take heart from City’s poor recent record in the FA Cup against lower league teams, though they will surely be realistic about what they can hope to achieve at the Etihad Stadium. Currently languishing in 21st place in the Championship, if they managed to win it would be an historic upset.

History might not be on the side of the Millers, though. The Yorkshire club have lost each of their last five FA Cup games, and conceded two or more goals in each of those matches (14 in total). Their last victory in the FA Cup came in the first round in 2013/14, when they beat Bradford City 3-0.

Warne will not be able to call on midfielder Ryan Manning, as he has been recalled from his loan spell by parent club Queens Park Rangers. Zak Vyner, Clark Robertson, Kyle Vassell and Darren Potter also missed the New Year’s Day win over Preston and could be doubts for the weekend’s game.

Manchester City vs Rotherham United Preview: Recent Meetings

This is just the second time that City have been drawn against the Millers in the FA Cup. The previous meeting between the teams in this competition was in 1978/79, when City won a third round replay to knock the South Yorkshire side out of the Cup. The two teams have only met on 10 occasions in total in history. Of those 11 games, City have won seven and there have been three draws. The Millers have never beaten City in a competitive game.

The last time the two teams played each other was in the 2001/02 season, when they were both in the First Division, which was what the current Championship was called back then. City won the first league game that season, at Maine Road, 2-1. The second game, at Millmoor, ended in a 1-1 draw.

City’s Under-21 side did play Rotherham in the EFL Trophy in August, 2017. That game ended 1-1.

Manchester City vs Rotherham United Prediction: Comfortable Home Win

If you are looking for Manchester City vs Rotherham United betting tips for today, then our prediction for this game is that City will win this game comfortably. Even if Pep Guardiola picks a reserve team, the home side should still have sufficient quality to win this game in a straightforward manner. City’s main enemy, as it is for all Premier League clubs facing lower league opposition in the Cup, is complacency. City have won just three of their last seven FA Cup games against sides from a lower division, having drawn one and lose three of those games. Two of those defeats came against Wigan Athletic. They can be vulnerable, then, and the Millers are sure to be well motivated.
