Manchester United
Everton

Continuing their “one step forward, two steps back” season, the hosts come into this game off the back of a home defeat against Juventus that could have been much heavier. It will be tempting for many to ignore the prevailing Manchester United vs Everton betting tips and back the in-form visitors, but this game still represents a step up in quality from the three sides that the Toffees have knocked off in their last three games. Anything other than a home win here, though, will cause renewed rumblings among the Old Trafford faithful.

In times gone by this would have been viewed as three easy points for United, but it now feels like a game they will make heavy weather of. We can well see the first half being patchy and uninspiring, and the 13/2 offered by 138 on the game’s first goal coming early in the second half might be the Manchester United vs Everton best odds of the evening. One of the hosts’ brightest sparks this season has been wide forward Anthony Martial, and at 7/4 to score any time with William Hill, he’s certainly worth backing after his double salvo at Stamford Bridge. Taking into account the hosts’ travails at the back – but assuming that they’ll have enough up front to make up for it, we’re also interested in Toals’ 12/5 on United winning a game where both teams score.

Manchester United vs Everton Betting Tips: Form Guide

United Inconsistency Threatens To Become Chronic

Going into last weekend’s crunch game with Chelsea, you’d have found few credible pundits willing to back anything other than a loss for Jose Mourinho’s current side. This seemed even more clear when his former employers took a first-half lead through Antonio Rudiger, but as Chelsea spurned opportunities to take full control the visitors grew into the game. Two goals from Martial went close to securing an improbable win, before Ross Barkley equalised with more or less the final kick of the ball.

One might have expected the boost from a battling performance to carry over into a midweek Champions League meeting with Italian champions Juventus at Old Trafford but – spoiler alert – it didn’t. The Turin side scored after 17 minutes through Dybala, and although numerous close calls did not culminate in them getting a second goal, they didn’t need to. In the end, so poor were United that Juve barely needed the first goal.

Disturbingly, aside from a short spell in September when Burnley, Watford and Young Boys were brushed aside, Mourinho’s side haven’t won consecutive games this season. The draw at Chelsea came on the heels of an impressive revival from 2-0 down to beat Newcastle 3-2. But if you need a comeback to beat Newcastle, you’re not in the best of shape anyway, and Manchester United vs Everton betting tips for today are made in the knowledge that no game for the Red Devils brings a guaranteed three points right now. With away games against an energised Bournemouth, Juventus and Manchester City to come after this, United need an uncomplicated win here.

Three And (Too) Easy For Everton?

After a wobbly start to the season, Everton are finally motoring on the back of three consecutive wins. An impressive attack inspired by Gylfi Sigurdsson, spearheaded by Cenk Tosun, and given width by a rejuvenated Theo Walcott and Richarlison has been easy on the eye and has started to fire in goals. This is Everton, so there is of course a “but” coming, and in this case it’s the fact that those three wins have been home encounters against Fulham and Crystal Palace wrapped around a trip to random result generation project Leicester City (Everton caught them in a dip, and beat a ten-man Foxes side 2-1).

Of course, those were still games that might not have been wins – particularly in the never-safe hands of Everton – and it’s to Marco Silva’s credit that Fulham were pulverised 3-0. While the goals were late in coming against Palace (the hosts survived a missed penalty before subs Tosun and Dom Calvert-Lewin scored in the last three minutes), Everton showed they can eke out wins as well as being handed them. They’ll come to Old Trafford with a certain confidence, and with a few extra days of preparation time having missed out on a European place last season.

What you may read in Manchester United vs Everton match previews is that the visitors should rely on sitting deep, trying to hit the dynamic Tosun as a target man and have him bring the pacey wide men into the game. However, that’s not what’s been bringing them results, and with an opponent still in the grip of a crisis, it’s fair to wonder whether Silva’s best bet is to go at the hosts’ messy defence from the first whistle.

Manchester United vs Everton Preview: Recent Meetings

This is the third time in a row that Everton will have faced Manchester United with a different manager in the dugout, with Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce having shared the blame for two defeats against the Red Devils last season. At Old Trafford, Koeman’s version of Everton were sucker-punched by a fifth-minute Antonio Valencia goal, then managed to pull down the shutters until the last eight minutes. Goals from Mkhitaryan, Lukaku and an injury-time penalty by Martial gave the scoreline a slightly unfair tilt, but the three points went to the right side.

With Allardyce installed for the return fixture on Merseyside on New Year’s Day, Everton were more defensively solid, waiting until the 57th minute before going behind. Martial was on target again to give the visitors a 1-0 lead, which was augmented late on by a Jesse Lingard goal. United won 2-0, securing the “double” over their North-West neighbours.

Manchester United vs Everton Prediction: Stodgy Home Win

Where once Old Trafford was a stadium that struck fear into the hearts of lesser sides, the roll of names that have won or drawn there this season makes for worrying reading for a United fan. Spurs (0-3) and Juventus (0-1) were fair enough, although the performance level in those defeats was poor. Valencia came and got a 0-0 draw, while a League Cup loss to Derby County was a very poor show. And yes, Newcastle were vanquished, but only after leading 2-0 inside ten minutes. The stadium has this season been less a graveyard of the giants, more a playground of mediocrity.

So what does this mean for our Manchester United vs Everton prediction for this evening? Given the visitors’ solid recent form, there’s every reason to suggest that they could pick up a point or more here, but we’re going to resist the temptation to predict it. The draw at Chelsea showed that there is still a quality team in there when Mourinho can drag it out of them, and there’s really no alternative to victory here if United are to go into a minefield of an away run with any confidence at all. We think they’ll get it, perhaps by a margin of 2-1, but don’t ask us to predict how their season will turn from there.
