Mexico
Uruguay

Mexico and Uruguay meet in Houston, Texas, this weekend for an international friendly match. Both countries enjoyed good World Cup campaigns in Russia over the summer, and will now want to build on that success for the immediate future. Mexico still have an interim coach in place for this game. Uruguay, meanwhile, has been beset by problems in its domestic football, with FIFA having to intervene.

Mexico vs Uruguay Betting Tips: Form Guide

Mexico Building For The Future

Ricardo ‘Tuca’ Ferretti remains in interim charge of the Mexico national team. He has stressed this week that he is not putting himself in the frame to take on the job permanently, mainly because of his loyalty to his club side, Tigres UANL. The 64-year-old will remain in post with Mexico for the next year or so, while a long-term replacement for Juan Carlos Osorio is sought. He signed a three-year contract extension with his club recently, and has no plans to break the deal to coach Mexico, much to the disappointment of many Mexican supporters.

Ferretti maintains that, even though an interim coach, his focus will be on blooding the next generation of Mexican international talent and helping to develop a stronger national side. This Uruguay clash is the first of six friendlies for El Tri over the next three months or so, so Ferretti will have plenty of games to see his players in action.

His squad for the Uruguay game includes only five players based in Europe, with stars like West Ham United forward Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez, Real Betis midfielder Andres Guardado and Villarreal defender Andres Guardad sitting this game out.

Uruguay Rebuilding During Domestic Problems

Due to the ongoing situation with domestic football in Uruguay, Oscar Tabarez is no longer coach of the national side. Under-20 coach Fabian Coito is in interim charge of the national team, as a result. What that means for selection and tactics remains to be seen, but most of the team’s big stars, including Luis Suarez, are in the squad. Suarez sat out training this week, though, as a precaution. Another player to miss training was Nicolas Lodeiro, the player who was called up after the injury to Giorgian De Arrascaeta. Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde has also been called into the group, after Penarol midfielder Cristiano Rodriguez had to withdraw from the squad due to a muscular injury in his right leg. Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is another of the 18 foreign-based players in the squad.

At the World Cup, Uruguay reached the quarter-finals, where they lost 2-0 to eventual winners France. They knocked out Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo in the round of 16, beating the Portuguese 2-1 in Sochi. Edinson Cavani scored both Uruguayan goals in that game, but the Paris Saint Germain striker is being rested for the clash with Mexico.

Mexico vs Uruguay Preview: Recent Meetings

The last time these two sides met was in the Copa America in June 2016, at the University of Phoenix Stadium, Glendale, California. The game was part the group stages of the tournament, with both of these teams being drawn in Group C of the competition. The game ended 3-1 in favour of Mexico. The scoring was opened after just four minutes, when Uruguay’s Alvaro Pereira put through his own goal to put Mexico 1-0 up. Uruguay equalised in the 74th minute of the contest, thanks to a goal from Diego Godin. A goal from Rafael Marquez in the 85th minute put Mexico back into the lead. Hector Herrera added a third for the Mexicans in the 90th minute of normal time, sealing a convincing victory. Mexico topped the group, while Uruguay finished third, and were eliminated from the competition. Mexico lost 7-0 to Chile in the next round.

Mexico vs Uruguay Prediction: Dull Score Draw

If you’re looking for Mexico vs Uruguay betting tips for today, then it is worth bearing in mind that many of Mexico’s top players are missing for this game. Uruguay have also rested players like Cavani. We are likely to see two experimental line-ups, with both coaches filling their roles on an interim basis. Expecting an exciting game might therefore be a little optimistic. Friendly internationals can often seem a little dull and lacking in intensity anyway, but this one would seem to be set up to be little more than a training game. Our predicted final score is 1-1, with both interim managers learning a little, but not much, about the quality of players at their disposal.
