AS Monaco
Atletico Madrid

Thomas Lemar makes an earlier-than-expected return to his old Monte Carlo stomping ground this week. as his new club Atletico Madrid face off against old flames Monaco. The Stade Louis II hasn’t seen much to cheer the fans recently, and Monaco vs Atletico Madrid betting tips tend to agree that this frustration will continue through this evening’s game. Although Atleti haven’t started the season the way they would have hoped, they’re expected to have enough to do the business here.

Both sides will be looking to shake off poor form here, and neither will see this as a sure three points, but Atletico do have more options in their squad and are justified favourites. At 3/4 with Dafabet, they’re worth backing here given the quality they’ve got. Toals, meanwhile, are offering odds of 2/1 on the visitors to win and there to be more than 2.5 goals in the game. Monaco vs Atletico Madrid Betting Tips: Form Guide

Monaco Look For First Win In Five

Monaco were champions of France in 2017. They’ve been to Champions League semi-finals, knocking out Manchester City to get there, in the last eighteen months. They have been a production line of top European talent, and yet they’re in bad shape after five weeks of the Ligue 1 campaign. With five points from their first five games, they sit ten behind league leaders PSG, and they haven’t won since the opening weekend of the campaign. While Leonardo Jardim’s job may not currently be under threat,he wouldn’t want to keep this run going much longer.

After beating Nantes 3-1 on the season’s opening day, Monaco have fallen away in a surprising fashion. The departure of Lemar over the summer has cost them a key player, but the level of opposition they have faced should have allowed for more points to be accumulated. Defeat at Bordeaux was a poor result, although draws at Toulouse and at home to a fairly poor Lille side (0-0) have been just as costly in their way. In another home game, Jardim’s men faced Marseille, and let a 2-1 lead slip to give their visitors a 3-2 win.

The weekend saw the Monegasques travel to Toulouse, and field what looked suspiciously like a weakened side – in all likelihood, wrapping Falcao and co. under cotton wool for this game. In their absence, Monaco played a more restrained game and controlled things for most of the 90 minutes. Youri Tielemans, one of the few first-teamers who stayed in place, scored an opening goal after 56 minutes. However, in keeping with the lack of confidence that has made Monaco vs Atletico Madrid betting tips for today favour the visitors, ASM allowed an equaliser on 79 through Aaron Leya, and dropped another two points.

Atleti Not Living Up To Expectations – Yet

Atletico Madrid’s fixture list for the start of this season was not the most forgiving they could have had. Valencia, Celta Vigo and Eibar all finished in the top half last season, and Atleti had to face the first two away from home. Nonetheless, with Diego Simeone facing fan expectations that his side could present this season’s biggest threat to defending champions Barcelona, they would have hoped to pick up more than the five points they’ve collected in their first four games. They’ve got a single win on the board and, with the best will in the world, it came against Rayo Vallecano, who will struggle to stay in La Liga this season.

At the moment, Simeone’s side are that most un-Simeone of things – a side that is playing like less than the sum of its parts. With a settled defence and goalkeeper, Lemar on one wing and Correa on the other, and Griezmann partnered up front by Diego Costa, this is a side that should be beating all-comers – not least because they can call on the likes of Nikola Kalinic, Koke and Thomas Partey to change things up. The problem comes with trying to integrate the new additions – they will certainly be assets to this side when they bed in, but in the meantime, the collective doesn’t quite feel right. Draws against Valencia and Eibar (1-1 each time) saw very fitful performances from Atletico.

Of course, few managers are more secure in their jobs than Simeone, who has come to be viewed as a hero in the red-and-white enclaves of the Spanish capital. He’ll be given time to get things right and, as Monaco vs Atletico Madrid match previews will undoubtedly point out, it’s better to be the team trying to figure out how to play with Thomas Lemar than the side trying to figure out how to move forward without him

Monaco vs Atletico Madrid Preview: Recent Meetings

These sides are meeting for the first time in a competitive game – indeed, to risk overstating a point, their most important meeting so far may have been the one back in the summer that involved arriving at a price for Monaco’s best player.

Monaco have played Spanish sides over the years, as is to be expected from a side who are Champions League regulars. The last time they faced La Liga opponents, it was Villarreal in the preliminary rounds of 2016/17’s tournament. A penalty from Fabinho (now at Liverpool) and a finish from Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) in the away leg gave ASM a 2-1 advantage. A further Fabinho penalty at Stade Louis II ensured their qualification.

Atleti’s last meeting with a French club saw them take on Rennes in the 2011/12 Europa League group stage. A 1-1 draw at the Stade du Route de L’Orient was followed three months later by a 3-1 win at Estadio Vicente Calderon. Among the home side’s goalscorers that night was Radamel Falcao, who has been on his travels since, and will line up tonight against the side from Madrid.

Monaco vs Atletico Madrid Prediction: Confident Away Win

Give or take a defeat, these sides have very similar records at the start of this season, but the key difference is that Atletico have faced some of the better sides in Europe while Monaco have shared the points with Toulouse and Lille – both of whom just barely escaped relegation from Ligue 1 last season. While neither team has hit its straps yet – ASM have lost a key player, but are still a hugely talented side – it very much feels like Atleti are closer to doing so. The opening strains of the famous Champions League music may well give them the nudge they need.

There is also the fact that Atletico, should they need to change things up, can call on a world-class bench of substitutes, while Monaco aren’t entirely sure what they have in the cupboard right now. They invested in potential rather than immediate success in the summer – a smart choice, as few clubs have as good a record of developing players, but it does leave them light on game-changing options. For these reasons, our Monaco vs Atletico Madrid prediction is for the visitors to emerge with all three points from this opening game, and probably grab a few goals in the process.
