Motherwell
Hearts

With four wins from their first four games, Hearts sit pretty atop the Scottish Premiership going into this eminently winnable visit to last year’s two-time cup final also-rans Motherwell. The Steelmen have started the season looking decidedly more like the Aluminium-men, although people looking for Motherwell vs Hearts betting tips should consider that they’ve at least found their scoring boots, with three goals in each of their last two games. Can they bring the Jambos back to Earth with another few goals here?

Despite having been perfect across five domestic games, Hearts can’t get much love from the bookies, and they start this game as 7/5 favourites with Toals. They should probably be odds-on, so those could be the Motherwell vs Hearts best odds of the afternoon. You’ll also find odds of 11/2 (Unibet) against Steven Naismith scoring first at Fir Park. He was in the goals for Scotland in midweek, and we’d be far from surprised for a player of his ability and work rate to follow up with another here. If you’re looking for a longer-odds punt, then the correct score market has to be your focus. You can get 17/2 from 138.com for the visitors to leave Lanarkshire with a 2-1 win, and those are odds worth taking.

Motherwell vs Hearts Betting Tips: Form Guide

‘Well Start Badly

Motherwell spent most of last season being a “cup team”. They sat in the bottom half of the league, never seriously threatened with relegation nor threatening to climb into the top six. They did reach two domestic cup finals, but were unfortunate enough to face Celtic in both, and consequently lost them. Nonetheless, it was an impressive enough bow in the job for former Northern Ireland international Stephen Robinson, and he was expected to oversee an improvement in their Premiership form this season.

Those expectations were pretty thoroughly dashed after 180 minutes of football, as ‘Well followed up a 3-0 thrashing by Hibs on the opening weekend with a defeat – at home – by relegation candidates Hamilton. A win at Livingstone in the League Cup (of course they’d improve in the cups) saw some good cheer, before Steven Gerrard brought Rangers to town. The Steelmen took the lead twice, only to see Kyle Lafferty, making his second debut for the Blues, equalise both times. With Ovie Ejaria slotting home before half time to give the visitors the lead, it looked like three defeats in a row, but Peter Hartley plucked a late, late equaliser to pick up a 3-3 draw.

Last time out, Motherwell faced Dundee at Dens Park. With Neil McCann’s side struggling at the bottom of the table, not a single point to their name, this was a golden opportunity for a first win. Second-half goals for Daniel Johnson, Gael Bigirimana and Allan Campbell made it so, and the fact they now have a win on the board may explain the relatively kind Motherwell vs Hearts betting tips for today you’ll find online.

Young (And More Experienced) Hearts Run Free

Craig Levein spent most of the summer rebuffing Rangers bids for Kyle Lafferty and, after Hearts had just sneaked into last season’s top six, not much was expected of the Edinburgh side even before Hearts inevitably relented and let the Northern Irishman leave. At any rate, they got a couple of games out of him before he moved, in the second of which he delivered a long-range winner against the visiting Celtic. Coming after an excellent 4-1 opening-day win at Hamilton, it was as good a start to the season as Hearts could have imagined.

The truth is, while Lafferty was top scorer last season, Hearts don’t seem to be missing him this time around. Uche Ikpeazu, secured on a free from Cambridge, has mostly replaced the departed player’s bustling, all-action presence, while the pace and wiliness of Naismith has made him a threat to Premiership defences. Indeed, he’s at the top of the division’s scoring chart thanks to a goal at Hamilton and a hat-trick in the last game, a 4-1 slapping of St Mirren which also saw newly-acquired Austrian midfielder Peter Haring impress the viewers, chipping in with an assist to add to his opening-day double.

As things stand then, a team sits on top of the Premiership, with four wins from four, and they aren’t a Glasgow side. You could understand if Motherwell vs Hearts match previews on the maroon side of Edinburgh were starting to get a bit carried away – but the taciturn Levein won’t be having any title talk in his dressing room.

Motherwell vs Hearts Preview: Recent Meetings

Hearts and Motherwell met a total of four times last season – three in the league, and also a Scottish Cup quarter-final. The latter was won, of course, by cup specialists Motherwell, Curtis Main scoring early and Carl McHugh late on, either side of a Lafferty equaliser. In the league, they split the games equally – one home win for Motherwell, one for Hearts, and in between the two a 1-1 draw at Tynecastle.

A warning sign for Hearts arises in the fact that in each of those four games, they scored just once. Three of those were by Lafferty, now departed for Glasgow, while the opening goal in their draw last January fell to midfielder David Milinkovic, now warming the bench at Hull City. They’ll need to find someone else to score the goals if they’re going to win this one – but with ten goals in their first four league games, there is no shortage of candidates.

Hearts vs Motherwell Prediction: Confident Away Win

Last season, Hearts were affected by a mix of experienced players – perhaps too experienced – and green products from the club’s youth system with few players from anywhere in between. This season, there is more of a natural blend of players, and it shows. The younger members of the squad are a year more experienced, and have played alongside internationals such as Lafferty, Naismith, Christophe Berra and Aaron Hughes. 21-year-old John Souttar, an ever-present at the back, has earned a Scotland call-up himself due to his calm, assured performances. This progression has made all the difference – Hearts are a more consistent side than last time.

With four consecutive wins under their belts, it would be harsh not to make a Motherwell vs Hearts prediction that favours the visitors to keep the winning run going. Motherwell are not as bad as the first two games made them look, but perhaps not as good as a team with two Cup final appearances would be expected to be. Robinson deserves time at the helm to mould this unit into a more consistent group, but in the meantime it is Hearts who deserve the backing on this occasion. It won’t be 4-1, but we’d pick Hearts to win in a thrilling contest.
