Northampton Town
Cheltenham Town

Both sides are struggling in the lower reaches of the League Two table, but it’s still early in the season and a stirring revival could start for either side with a win at Sixfields this weekend. The home side are in mildly better form than their visitors, so Northampton Town vs Cheltenham Town betting tips will likely lean towards the Cobblers, but in reality neither side has hit the kind of form that makes this game a foregone conclusion. Read on to see where we think it’s going.

Home advantage means that Northampton are probably best-placed to take the three points here, and although the bookmakers agree you can clearly get a decent price on them – 4/6 with Ladbrokes is a bet worth taking. Looking at first goalscorer markets, the obvious standout in this game is the hosts’ striker Kevin van Veen. You can get 4/1 at William Hill for him to get the ball rolling here. As for a final score bet, the sides are not far apart in terms of quality, and a 2-1 win for the home team would be no surprise. 888sport are offering 7/1 on that outcome, which is worth taking seriously.

Northampton Town vs Cheltenham Town Betting Tips: Form Guide

Northampton Look To Cobble Together A Run

Dean Austin’s side took a beating last time out, 1-0 at the hands of Wycombe Wanderers. However, losing against a team in a higher division, in the Checkatrade Trophy, is not something they’ll dwell on for overly long. It’s in League Two they’ll have to focus, because a run of wins could take them from their current 18th spot into the higher reaches, potentially even the playoff spots. Whether or not they have the players and the poise to do it is another matter, but if they can turn some of the draws they’ve had into three points, then they’ll be looking good.

The major frustration for Austin will be that his side have held the lead repeatedly in some of the drawn games. A 2-2 draw with Carlisle is no bad result, but Cobblers fans will be frustrated that after they’d turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead through goals from van Veen and Matt Crooks, they couldn’t hold it. Against Cambridge, van Veen was again in form, giving his side the lead twice, but seeing both goals equalised by the visitors.

Last time out in the league, Northampton hosted Tranmere and this time, it was the East Midlands side that notched a valuable equaliser, Junior Morias slotting home on the hour to cancel out a James Norwood opener. Today, they’re facing a weaker side and will fancy their chances of living up to Northampton Town vs Cheltenham Town betting tips for today – as long as they don’t get stung by a late equaliser.

Robins Have Little To Sing About

Just promoted from the top of the non-league pyramid, Cheltenham can feel pretty pleased with themselves just to be back in the league proper, and maybe that’s all they need to focus on this season. At present, they are two points above the relegation spots, but the next forty games are going to be tough for them if they can’t become consistent goalscorers. Four of their first six games have been lost, and three of those by the agonising margin of 1-0. If they can just find a way to score, they’ll turn those defeats into draws, and it could make all the difference in consolidating their league status.

Their frustration must be greater because they’re conceding early on in games and, while not losing any more goals, are not managing to hit back during the rest of the game. A striker who puts away even half the chances that fall to him would make all the difference, but at the moment the opposition are finding it easy to get ahead, then sit back and defend in full confidence that Cheltenham won’t break them down. Although they picked up a point at Macclesfield, it came through an 85th-minute equaliser and no team can rely on late heroics too often.

One thing that Northampton Town vs Cheltenham Town match previews should note is that we’re seeing a team prone to conceding goals when ahead taking on a team who can’t seem to get back in a game once their opponents take a lead. If Northampton can get an early goal, this game could grow jittery very quickly.

Northampton Town vs Cheltenham Town Preview: Recent Meetings

With Cheltenham having spent some time out of the Football League, these sides have not met in the last few seasons. Indeed, their last meetings came in the 2014/15 season, when both were in League Two. The game in Northampton ended 2-0 to the hosts, with Ivan Toney and Marc Richards grabbing the goals in a result which helped condemn their opponents to relegation.

The game at Cheltenham that season was a rare high point for the Gloucestershire side. Two goals from Terry Gornell and one for John Marquis gave them a 3-2 win on the day, Joel Byrom and David Moyo responding for the visitors. Of course, both sides are radically different today from the sides who took the field in 2014-2015, so those games offer scant guidance to how things will shape up today.

Northampton Town vs Cheltenham Town Prediction: Anxious Home Win

Northampton’s season could go either way from this point. They’re obviously more than capable of putting together a performance and they have players who can get the ball in the net. If they can keep their focus for 90 minutes more often, they’re entirely capable of going on a run to the playoffs or beyond. Cheltenham, only recently promoted back to the Football League, have more modest ambitions. Staying in League Two – even if it meant finishing in their current 21st place – would be an acceptable season.

Those divergent ambitions are what we expect to see reflected on the pitch this weekend. We wouldn’t expect Northampton to thrash their opponent here, but our Northampton Town vs Cheltenham Town prediction is that they should have enough ability and confidence to pull off a win in front of their home fans and start to climb the table. If we had to predict a score, we’d see it being a single-goal margin, with 2-1 probably the most likely outcome.
