Peterborough United
Portsmouth

It’s a clash of the top two for football fans in Cambridgeshire this weekend, with first-placed Peterborough United welcoming second-placed Portsmouth to the ABAX Stadium on Saturday. Peterborough currently have a two-point lead over the team from Hampshire, so a Portsmouth victory would see them capture top spot. There is plenty to play, and fans should be in for a really entertaining game on Saturday afternoon.

Peterborough United vs Portsmouth Betting Tips: Form Guide

Posh Collecting Awards

Peterborough have been boosted this week by the news that they have received a ‘clean sweep’ of league awards for the month of August. Gaffer Steve Evans took the League One Manager of the Month award, Jason Cummings was named as Player of the Month, and Siriki Dembele’s superb solo strike against Luton Town was confirmed as the Goal of the Month. Those individual awards reflect the team’s performances too, with Posh sitting top of League One.

Peterborough have only failed to win one of their League One matches so far in 2018/19, drawing 1-1 away at Doncaster Rovers on September 1. They have won all their other league matches, collecting 19 points. Impressively, they also have a goal difference of plus 12, having scored 19 goals and conceded just seven. Fans of the club will be hoping that Evans and his team can sustain that kind of form throughout the season, as it would make them almost certain to win automatic promotion.

If they are to do that and reach the Championship, though, they need to beat teams like Portsmouth, who are undoubtedly one of the bigger clubs in the division, and in good form themselves.

Jackett Relishing Pompey’s Good Form

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett has told the media this week that this is a game he and his team are relishing, and he is expecting an entertaining match for the fans who will travel in support of Pompey. Jackett also stated that he is aiming to instil more consistency in his team, though he will change the 4-2-3-1 formation that they have used so far if circumstances require it.

Jackett will be missing four players from his squad this weekend, though. Anton Walkes and Jack Whatmough are out with minor injuries, and could return to action next week. Dioon Donahue has tweaked his hamstring playing in a friendly against Reading earlier this week, while Andre Green has a knee problem. Ronan Curtis has returned to the group, though, to boost Jackett’s options in attack. The young Irishman has scored five goals in six League One games for Pompey this season, and was rewarded for that form recently with a call-up to the Republic of Ireland U-21s.

Like Peterborough, Pompey are yet to lose a league game this season, having won five and drawn two of their seven League One games so far in 2018/19.

Peterborough United vs Portsmouth Preview: Recent Meetings

These two sides last met in 2017/18 in League One, when they played each other twice. The first game was at Posh’s ABAX Stadium on November 21, 2017. The game ended 2-1 to the home side. Jack Marriot opened the scoring for Peterborough after 58 minutes. The lead was extended in the 70th minute, when Portsmouth’s Matt Clarke put through his own net. Conor Chaplin pulled one back for Pompey in the 78th minute, but they were unable to force an equaliser.

The second game was at Portsmouth’s Fratton Park on May 5, 2018. This time it was Pompey who emerged victorious, taking the game 2-0. Brett Pitman opened the scoring for the home side after just 13 minutes. The second goal was scored in the 25th minute by Jamal Lowe, with no further goals being added by either side for the rest of the game.

Peterborough United vs Portsmouth Prediction: Narrow Home Win

With two teams who are currently unbeaten in League One facing each other, this should be a close, hard-fought game. It is hard to predict which team will come out on top, given that both are in such good form. Given Peterborough’s clean sweep of the League One awards in August, it would be a brave punter who bet against them. Steve Evans and his team also have home advantage, which might just tip things in their favour. Our prediction is that the Posh will emerge as victors from this game, but it will be very tight. If you’re looking for Peterborough United vs Portsmouth betting tips for today, we think the home side will win with the game’s only goal, which might well come from a moment of individual brilliance.
