Rangers
St Johnstone

Rangers return to domestic duties after some European adventures this week, and welcome St Johnstone to Ibrox on Saturday. The Perth outfit will see this game as a chance to get a positive result in Govan, given the home side’s exertions in the Europa League earlier this week. Getting a result at Ibrox is rarely an easy thing to do, though. We should be in for an interesting game.

Rangers vs St Johnstone Betting Tips: Form Guide

Rangers Back On The European Stage

Steven Gerrard’s Rangers team opened their Europa League group stage campaign with a somewhat surprising 2-2 draw away at Spanish side Villarreal. After going a goal down in the first minute of the game, the Gers fought back to parity, thanks to a Scott Arfield equaliser in the 67th minute. Although Villarreal went back into the lead just two minutes later, Kyle Lafferty struck in the 76th minute to level matters up again. That result is pretty significant for a club who have been absent from the European stage for some time.

But the Light Blues will need to back that result up with a good domestic performance against St Johnstone at Ibrox this weekend. Gerrard has called for more intensity and aggression from his team on Sunday. The Gers’ squad has been strengthened by the return to action of former Scotland midfielder Graham Dorrans, who came on as a late substitute in Spain. He adds experience and proven quality to the Light Blues’ midfield options.

Rangers are currently fourth in the Premiership table, having collected eight points from their five league games so far this season. Last time out in the league, they won 4-0 at home to Dundee.

Saints Holding Strong This Season

St Johnstone face a big week of fixtures. After facing Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday, they play Celtic in the League Cup quarter-final on Wednesday. Next weekend, they travel to Tynecastle to face league leaders Heart of Midlothian. Saints skipper Joe Shaughnessy has insisted that such a testing week holds no fear for him and the rest of the players, though, as these are the games that professionals relish.

The Perth side will feel that they have a chance of getting at least a draw at Ibrox, given that Rangers played away from home in the Europa League this week. The Saints will hope that that means Gerrard and his team have taken their focus away from domestic matters, and left themselves vulnerable.

Tommy Wright’s team are unbeaten in their last five games in all competitions. They have drawn twice during that run, and won three games. Those victories were away at Queen of the South in the League Cup, at home to Dundee and away at Hamilton Academical. Last time out, the Saints were held 1-1 at McDiarmid Park by Aberdeen. David McMillan put them in the lead early in the game, but they succumbed to a late Dons equaliser.

Rangers vs St Johnstone Preview: Recent Meetings

These two sides met three times during last season’s Scottish Premiership campaign. The first game was at McDiarmid Park in October 2017, and was won 3-0 by Rangers. The goals were scored by Carlos Pena and Graham Dorrans. In the next game, at Ibrox, saw St Johnstone come out on top at Ibrox. The Saints won the game 3-1, thanks to goals from Blair Alston, Denny Johnstone and Graham Cummins. All those goals were scored in response to an early strike from Alfredo Morelos which put Rangers into the lead in the first half.

The third and final encounter between the sides last season was at McDiarmid Park. Rangers dominated this game, winning 4-1. James Tavernier scored the Gers’ first from the penalty spot. Furth goals were added by Josh Windass, Sean Goss and Morelos, who all scored before the hour mark. Jason Kerr netted a Saints consolation goal.

Rangers vs St Johnstone Prediction: Low Scoring Draw

While Steven Gerrard has called for focus and discipline from his team after their adventures in Europe earlier this week, it will be still be tough for the Light Blues to return to domestic action. Playing at home offers the Gers a big advantage, but St Johnstone, who have been in good form recently, will feel confident that they can come away from Govan with at least a draw. We think that they can too. If you’re looking for Rangers vs St Johnstone betting tips for today, then we think the final score will be 1-1. Backing Lafferty to score for the home side also looks a good bet.
