Castleford Tigers
Wakefield Trinity

As the season reaches it business end in rugby league, Castleford Tigers welcome local rivals Wakefield Trinity to the Med-a-Hose Jungle for what should be an entertaining derby clash. Trinity do not have much to play beyond local bragging rights, but if they can secure a fifth-place finish in Super League, it would be a massive achievement. The Tigers, for their part, will be looking to generate some momentum before the semi-finals.

Castleford Tigers vs Wakefield Trinity Betting Tips: Form Guide

Tigers Building Towards Old Trafford

Luke Gale looks set to return in the number seven role for Cas on Friday evening, after being rested for the game against Huddersfield Giants last week. The England scrum-half is a vital cog in the Cas machine, and coach Daryl Powell will want him both to avoid injury and build some personal confidence in this game, after the player’s lengthy absence due to injury. If the Tigers are serious about winning the Grand Final next month, they will need Gale to be at his very best. Powell has made another change to his 19-man squad, too, with Will Maher replacing Joe Wardle in the group.

Castleford have been building some impressive form in recent weeks, having won their last four games. That winning run has seen them beat Warrington Wolves and Catalans Dragons at home, as well as the broken looking Hull FC away from home. Last time out, they enjoyed an emphatic 44-12 win over Huddersfield at the Jungle. In the absence of Luke Gale, hooker Paul McShane put his kicking boots on, and notched six conversions in that game. Junior Moors crossed for two tries, while Greg Eden also went over early in the game.

Wakefield Down To Bare Bones

Wakefield coach Chris Chester has revealed this week that he is down to his last 17 fit players for this short trip across to Castleford. Having so few players at his disposal adds to the pressure of trying to win for the first time in 10 matches against the Tigers.

The front row is one area of Chester’s team that is particularly depleted. Anthony England and Keegan Hirst joined David Fifita on the injured list this week. Another blow also came with the news that star winger Tom Johnstone will also be missing for the clash with Cas. The youngster strained his knee in the last play of the game against Catalans Dragons last week. Ben Jones-Bishop is set to step in to replace Johnstone. Skipper Danny Kirmond will also be absent from the Trinity back row.

Wakefield won that game against the Catalans, triumphing 34-22 at home to the Challenge Cup winners. Trinity have been on a run recently where they follow up a win with a defeat. They will hope that that pattern does not continue this week against Cas. Although there is nothing for Trinity to play for this season now, local bragging rights are always important.

Castleford Tigers vs Wakefield Trinity Preview: Recent Meetings

These two teams have met on two previous occasions in 2018, with the Tigers winning both games. The first of the games was back in March, at the Mobile Rocket Stadium. Castleford won the game 11-6, a result which was their fifth successive victory. Played in driving rain in West Yorkshire, the game was an attritional affair, with the Tigers having to make the most of their limited opportunities to score. Each side scored one try, with Luke Gale’s kicking of a conversion, two penalties and a drop goal proving decisive.

In the second meeting, the Tigers lost Luke Gale with the knee injury that he has only just recovered from. Played in April at the Jungle, the Tigers ran out 24-4 winners. Gale kicked three goals before having to leave the action. Jamie Ellis added another three in his absence, with tries coming from Greg Minkin, Adam Milner and Paul McShane.

Castleford Tigers vs Wakefield Trinity Prediction: Comfortable Home Win

If you are looking for Castleford Tigers vs Wakefield Trinity betting tips for today, our prediction for this game is that the home side will win. Wakefield are down the bare bones in terms of players who are fit and available to play, and look particularly depleted in the pack. Johnstone’s absence out wide will also be felt keenly. Cas have too much quality across the park to lose this game, and are sure to be feeling confident after their recent run of four games without defeat. We expect the Tigers to win by 11-20 points.
