Catalans Dragons
St Helens

St Helens make the journey to Perpignan this weekend to take on Challenge Cup winners Catalans Dragons. While the Saints have hit something of a rocky patch right now, the Catalans are in a situation where they do not really care what happens for the rest of the Super League season, having claimed the club’s first major trophy. What kind of rugby league match we will see remains to be see.

Catalans Dragons vs St Helens Betting Tips: Form Guide

Catalans Still Celebrating Cup Triumph

Catalans Dragons could be forgiven for taking the rest of the season off after the excitement of their history-making victory at Wembley in the Challenge Cup final last month. Head coach Steve McNamara even wondered, humorously it must be stressed, to the media in the wake of the Cup win whether there was any point his team playing their last five Super League games of the season. How the Catalans approach this game will be interesting, and we may see some of the young French players at the club given a run out.

Last weekend, the Dragons were beaten 36-4 away at Castelford. The team did not look anything like the heroes who had dug in so deep to beat Warrington Wolves at Wembley the week before. Given the celebrations that ensued in French Catalonia after the Challenge Cup victory, that result was not too much of a surprise.

One thing that may give the team a boost this week is that this is their first home game since the Wembley triumph. That means the fans are sure to be in passionate and excitable mood, which could well give the players some impetus to perform well.

Saints Struggling For Form

St Helens have found themselves in a difficult place in recent times. Ben Barba seems to have lost interest since being linked with a move back to Australia at the end of the season, while players like Danny Richardson have been found out a little by other teams. Performance levels are not as high as they were earlier in the season, when Justin Holbrook’s team swept all before them.

Last time out, they were well beaten by Wigan. Losing to their fiercest rivals is never pleasant for Saints fans, but the 30-10 scoreline and the ease with which Wigan seemed to be able to win will have troubled many of the club’s supporters. What will trouble them further is that they have lost three out of their last four games, the kind of form that would have looked unthinkable just a few weeks ago.

Ryan Morgan will not travel with the squad to France, after he suffered a head knock last time out against Wigan. French international pivot Theo Fages returns to the squad after missing out on bing part of the matchday 17 last week.

Catalans Dragons vs St Helens Preview: Recent Meetings

These two sides have played each other on three previous occasions this season. Two of those games have been in Super League, and one in the semi-final of the Challenge Cup. If you are looking for Catalans Dragons vs St Helens betting tips for today, then it is worth noting the outcome of the semi-final. Saints were well beaten in the game at the Macron Stadium, Bolton. The Dragons won the game 35-16, with tries being scored by Lewis Tierney, Benjamin Garcia, Tony Gigot and Sam Moa.

St Helens have won both of the Super League games between the teams this season. The first game, at Stade Gilbert Brutus in February, was won 21-12 by St Helens. The second league encounter, at the Totally Wicked Stadium in May, was won 26-12 by Saints. Overall, in Super League history, Catalans have won 12 meetings, and Saints 18.

Catalans Dragons vs St Helens Prediction: Narrow Home Win

Given Saints form, this might look like a pretty straightforward game for Justin Holbrook’s team, especially given that the home side are now basically on holiday. It would be unwise for anyone to write off the Catalans, though, especially given that they are usually very strong at home. For Saints, losing seems to have become a bit of a habit, at just the wrong time of the season. Catalans will be boosted by home crowd in a celebratory mood, too.

The prediction is that the Catalans will win this game, but not by much. Betting on a margin of between one and 10 points would be a good idea.
