Hull KR vs Widnes Vikings - Free Betting Tips

Hull Kingston Rovers
Widnes Vikings

Hull Kingston Rovers, despite having won four games in the Qualifiers, still have work to do if they want to secure their place in Super League next season. The Robins welcome Widnes Vikings to east Hull on Sunday afternoon, knowing that they need to win if they want to make sure of safety from relegation. Widnes, of course, have already had their relegation confirmed, and so have little to play for.

Hull KR vs Widnes Vikings Betting Tips: Form Guide

Robins Need To Win

Hull Kingston Rovers can still be relegated. Following their appalling performance at Toulouse at the weekend, where they threw away a 19-0 first-half lead to lose 34-23, Rovers can still find themselves in the dreaded Million Pound Game if they do not beat Widnes. No wonder the club have reduced ticket prices for the game by half this week to make sure that KCOM Craven Park is as full and noisy as possible.

Head coach Tim Sheens has spoken about keeping on an even keel this week, after expressing his extreme frustration with the manner of Saturday’s defeat in France. At least Sheens and his team will know exactly what they have to do on Sunday. Thanks to the vagaries of the fixture list, all the teams vying with Rovers for a Super League spot will have played before them. Whatever happens in the other games, though, Sheens will want his team to win their final game of the season.

Injuries are limiting the options available to the head coach, though, with the lumbering Joel Tomkins filling in at centre at Toulouse. Ben Crooks should return to the side to boost the outside backs options, though.

Chronically Bad Chemics Waiting For Season To End

Widnes have absolutely nothing left to play for this season, with their relegation from Super League having been confirmed with last weekend’s 2-12 defeat in Toronto. Their victory over Halifax the week before was pretty meagre comfort for what has been an awful season for the Chemics. Until that victory over Fax, the Vikings had not managed to win for 17 games in all competitions. Even then, their last victory before that dreadful losing run began was against League 1 minnows Coventry Bears in the Challenge Cup. They have not beaten a fellow Super League side since they beat Leeds Rhinos on February 25.

The basic problem the Chemics have is that there is not enough quality in their squad. Despite having some cracking young players, Widnes have a squad stuffed with average journeyman, some of whom are from Down Under. Morale and togetherness has clearly been an issue all season, and a change of coach from Denis Betts to Francis Cummins has had no effect on results at all. Many at the club will doubtless be pleased to see the back of the 2018 season.

Hull KR vs Widnes Vikings Preview: Recent Meetings

If you’re looking for Hull KR vs Widnes Vikings betting tips for today, then it is worth noting that Widnes have not beaten another Super League team since February. They have also lost both of their Super League games in 2018 against Hull KR. The first of those games was at KCOM Craven Park on April 7. Rovers won the game 31-12, with Juston Carney grabbing a brace of tries. Danny McGuire also knocked over a drop goal.

The second game was at the Select Security Stadium on July 14, and was a much closer affair. Rovers still ended up on the right side of the result, though, winning 26-24 this time. Former Widnes forward Danny Tickle kicked four conversions and scored a try against his old club. James Donaldson, Adam Quinlan and Liam Salter scored the Robins’ other tries.

Hull KR vs Widnes Vikings Prediction: [Three Word Prediction; i.e. “Narrow Home Win”]

Hull KR have found themselves up against it after last week’s debacle in France. One advantage they do have is that, due to the way the fixture list has panned out, they will now exactly what they have to do to survive and avoid the Million Pound Game. Widnes have nothing to play for, and that is bound to affect their confidence. Craven Park is also set to be full, to give the Robins another edge. We predict that Rovers will win this game by 12 points, and secure Super League safety.
