Warrington Wolves
St Helens

Warrington Wolves welcome St Helens to the Halliwell Jones Stadium this Saturday afternoon, for what is one of the most pointless games of the season. Neither side has anything meaningful left to play for, with Saints having claimed the League Leaders Shield last week. Warrington also cannot finish in any other position than fourth this season either. In a sense, this game is shadow boxing before the forthcoming semi-finals.

Warrington Wolves vs St Helens Betting Tips: Form Guide

Wire Rehearsing For Semi-Finals

Warrington confirmed on Friday the names of seven players who will not be with them next season. The list featured no real surprises, and this game will be an opportunity for the home crowd to say farewell to players like Tyrone Roberts, Ben Pomeroy, George King and Dom Crosby. In truth, those farewells are about the only reason many fans really have to turn up to this game. Steve Price’s team know that they are almost certain to finish in fourth place now, which means that they will face table-topping St Helens away from home in the semi-finals. That makes this game little more than a dress rehearsal for the bigger test to come.

That makes it hard for Price and his players, and we may well see plenty of key men rested for the game. More importantly, perhaps, the game will also give some players returning from injury a chance to get some game time into their legs. Tyrone Roberts, Kevin Brown, Chris Hill and Ben Murdoch-Masila are all back in the Wire squad after injury. Mike Cooper has also returned following a one-game ban.

The Wolves have lost both their previous games with St Helens in 2018.

Saints Seeking Motivation

Justin Holbrook’s St Helens team sealed first place in Super League and the League Leaders Shield with their 38-12 win over Hull FC last time out. That result followed their 26-22 victory over Challenge Cup winners Catalans Dragons in Perpignan. Those victories were very welcome, as they followed on from a disappointing derby defeat away at Wigan Warriors. The Saints were dominated by their old rivals in that game, losing 30-10, and that will have stung everyone associated with the club.

The main issue for Holbrook and his players this weekend is finding some motivation for this game. Saints have finished first in the league in the regular season, and are now trying to find form for the semi-finals, when they are almost certain to face Warrrington at home. How Holbrook approaches this game will be interesting to see.

Ryan Morgan, Dom Peyroux and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook are back in the Saints’ 19-man squad, returning in place of Aaron Smith, Matty Costello and Jack Welsby. Saints have won both of their previous matches against Wire this season, and will want to keep that run going on Saturday, if nothing else. Warrington might not be Wigan, but they are still fierce local rivals.

Warrington Wolves vs St Helens Preview: Recent Meetings

These two sides have met on two previous occasions in 2018. The first of these was in March, at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium. Saints ended up winning the game in pretty convincing style, with the final score being 30-12 in their favour. Mark Percival scored a hat-trick of tries for St Helens. Young halfback Danny Richardson chipped in with a try and six goals, collecting 16 points in total. Wire kept a close rein on Ben Barba that night, but to no avail.

The second game, at the Totally Wicked Stadium, was a much closer affair. The Saints ran out 14-12 winners in July. Ben Barba and Jonny Lomax scored tries for St Helens, with Danny Richardson adding two conversions and a penalty goal. Daryl Clark scored Wire’s solitary try, with Tyrone Roberts kicking a conversions and three penalty goals.

Warrington Wolves vs St Helens Prediction: Narrow Home Win

This game almost has the status of a practice match, there is so little riding on the result. Warrington will want to bid farewell to their home fans for another season with a victory, though, and there is local pride at stake too. If you are looking for Warrington Wolves vs St Helens betting tips for today, then we think that the game will be close. Wire should come out on top, largely because they are at home, but the margin of victory is likely to be less than 10 points.
