Scotland
Albania

Scotland warmed up for this UEFA Nations League clash with Albania with a 4-0 home defeat to Belgium. That result has left the Scottish players “spitting blood”, according to manager Alex McLeish. The pressure is already on the Scotland manager, even though this is the first competitive match of his second spell as Scotland boss. A small crowd is expected, so the Scottish team needs to generate its own passion.

Scotland vs Albania Betting Tips: Form Guide

McLeish Looking To Light Scottish Fire

Scotland found themselves outclassed on Friday evening against Belgium, when they were swept aside 4-0 by the team who finished third at the World Cup. That game was a poor choice of fixture by the SFA, who have handed McLeish a tough schedule. The boss must now work to pick his players up after a dispiriting defeat, in which basic errors played a massive part. The lack of genuine class in his squad was exposed by the Belgians. McLeish is also hamstrung by the fact that his two best players – skipper Andy Robertson and Kieran Tierney – are both left backs by trade. Playing them both in a 3-5-2 still seems to be the best way to get them both into the side, but it may leave Scotland vulnerable in other areas of the pitch, especially given the lack of genuine defenders in the squad.

Scotland’s midfield needs to show more fight and creativity, and pass the ball with more confidence against Albania. Strikers like Leigh Griffiths cannot thrive if they never get quality ball. The home side also need to recover the traditional sense of Scottish pride and passion that can often compensate for technical deficiencies.

Albania Want To Start Winning

Scotland and Alex McLeish are perhaps fortunate to be facing Albania on Monday night, with the visitors have endured a similar recent run of form to the hosts. Italian coach Christian Panucci has overseen three defeats in his side’s last five games. They do, though, head into this game against Scotland on the back of a 1-0 win in their opening Nations League match at home to Israel. Taulant Xhaka scored the game’s only goal in Elbasan on Friday night. Prior to that win over the Israelis, Albania had lost their previous three games.

The first of those games was against Norway in March. The Albanians lost 1-0 in Elbasan to the Scandinavians, who were preparing for the World Cup in Russia at the time. In their next game, in May, Albania faced Kosovo in Swtizerland, and were beaten 3-0, which was not a great result at all for Panucci’s team. That loss was followed up with another heavy defeat in a friendly, this time to Ukraine in a game played in France. Albania lost 4-1, with Emanuele Ndoj scoring their solitary goal, late in the game.

Scotland vs Albania Preview: Recent Meetings

Scotland and Albania have never played each other before in their histories. This makes it impossible to look back on any previous meetings between the sides. The Scotland women’s team did play their Albanian counterparts last week, though, sealing their place at next year’s Women’s World Cup with a fine 2-1 victory in Shkoder.

The Scotland men’s team will be hoping that they can repeat the heroics of the women, and follow their example. They are heading into the unknown a little with this fixture, but, given Albania#s very modest pedigree in the history of football, McLeish and his mean should feel confident that they can emulate their female counterparts, and produce a result to cheer the hearts of Scotland fans everywhere.

Scotland vs Albania Prediction: Narrow Home Win

If you are looking for Scotland vs Albania betting tips for today, then it might be wise to expect the home side to make heavy weather of this game. McLeish’s team will be low on confidence after getting a chasing off the Belgians on Friday evening, and have no recent record of success on which they can draw for inspiration. The prediction, though, is that they will have just enough quality and professionalism in the squad to overcome Albania, though it might be tense and tight. Our predicted scoreline is Scotland 1-0 Albania.
